The RGM-196 Freedom is a mass-produced Earth Federation mobile suit featured in the G-Saviour film and novel. One Gaean unit was piloted by Franz Dieter.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Produced as part of the long-running RGM series of mobile suits, the Freedom is a mobile suit formerly used by the Earth Federation before it was dissolved. The Freedom was primarily designed to be used in space and can only rely on two-dimensional movement while under normal gravity.[1]

Designed during the Federation's decline, the Freedom is representative of an era where mobile suit technology had been lost in prior wars, and military research and development was obstructed by constitutional red tape.[1] As such, compared to modern mobile suits seen in U.C. 0223 such as CONSENT's CCMS-03 Bugu, the Freedom lacks the performance expected of a mass-production military mobile suit. The Saviour team was formed by the Congressional Armed Forces in an attempt to create a more appropriate military mobile suit, resulting in the Bugu.[1]

Although a decades old mobile suit, the Freedom continued to see usage by veteran pilots, who referred to it as "Old Dog" due to its ease of maintenance and high reliability.[1] This is in contrast to newer mobile suits such as the Bugu, which has higher performance but is more expensive to maintain.[1] Furthermore, the basic design of the Freedom allows for flexibility in fine-tuning, and a skilled mobile suit mechanic can increase its performance tremendously by making modifications to the base machine. An example of such a unit is the F-SAVIOUR F-Saviour, part of the Illuminati's Saviour line built by the Saviour team. The F-Saviour is simply a Freedom with modified internal components.[1][2]

The units used by Side 8 (Gaea) lacked the ability to use the Freedom's original beam weapons and are only compatible with older handheld weapons utilizing the MPC-1 and MPC-2 handplugs.[3]

Armaments[]

  • Vulcan Guns
A pair of vulcan guns located in the head. Used to thwart enemy movement.
  • Beam Saber
The Freedom's only close range melee weapon. It is stored on the backpack when not in use.
  • Beam Shield
The Freedom has beam shield generators located on both of its forearms.
  • MC-1 thru MC-2 and MPC-1 thru MPC-2 Compatible Hand Weapons
The Freedom can be equipped with a variety of old handheld weaponry through a handplug system.
  • Machine Gun
A machine gun that fires physical rounds. It has a high rate of fire but is largely ineffective against more modern mobile suits. The high rate of fire may have helped compensate for the Gaean pilots' inexperience.[3]
  • Shield
The Freedoms deployed by Gaea carry a physical shield for blocking ranged attacks. However the shield is seldom able to protect the Freedom, as it is easily damaged by beam weaponry.

History[]

The Freedom was created near the end of the Earth Federation, and is almost three decades old during the events of G-Saviour. The Freedom was used by the Earth Federation Forces from its introduction in U.C. 0196 up until the dissolution of the Federation in U.C. 0218. Following the end of the Federation, it fell into private use by the Settlements for self-defense and construction.[1][2]

In U.C. 0223 a squadron of Gaean Freedoms were deployed when Congressional Armed Forces led by General Garneaux attack the Side 8 Settlement of Gaea. These Gaean units lacked the ability to use the Freedom's original beam weapons, instead relying on old physical handheld weapons utilizing the MPC-1 and MPC-2 handplugs.[3] In addition, the Gaean Freedoms had not received regular maintenance, and several units had unstable reactors. Of the 50 Freedom units Gaea had, only 40 were deployed, with the other 10 being used for spare parts.[1] The outdated mobile suits were no match for the more advanced CONSENT mobile suits and autonomous mobile weapons, the MW-Rais.

One Freedom, piloted by Franz Dieter, was severely damaged and crashed onto Gaea's solar panels. He and the other Freedom pilots, who were volunteers not experienced with MS combat, won the battle only through the intervention of Mark Curran in the G-Saviour Space Mode and the arrival of the Illuminati.
