The RGC-80 Prototype GM Cannon is a prototype artillery mobile suit featured in the Mobile Suit Variation series and MSV-R.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The RX-77 Guncannon is an excellent medium-range support mobile suit and plans were made to put it into mass production. However, in line with the core of the RX Project, which is to create a multipurpose, easily convertible mobile suit, the design of the Guncannon needed to be simplified. The Earth Federation Forces' plan was to retain the Core Block function of the Core Fighter, with the mobile suit's upper body equipped with cannons for medium-range support. The first Prototype GM Cannon created under this plan was equipped with two shoulder-mounted 360mm cannons, and combined several parts of the Guncannon, such as its head and forearms, with the body of a RGM-79 GM. An improved machine called "Type 2" was later made, featuring modified cannons for better shooting performance and additional armor on the legs to improve posture stability.
Armaments[]
- 60mm Vulcan Gun
- A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. Low offensive power, only used to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid-fire capability.
- 360mm Cannon
- A pair of low-recoil cannons mounted on the shoulders. Although their dampened recoil is not a problem for Guncannon, the same cannot be said for the lighter GM frame, which is also more adversely affected by the higher center of gravity due to having these cannons.
History[]
The first Prototype GM Cannon rolled out in Jaburo in October of U.C. 0079. During tests, it was discovered that the mobile suit had issues with weight balance and stability when firing its cannons. A second prototype machine called "Type 2" was made around 5 days later and fixed several of the first prototype's issues, but it was still deemed insufficient. After reworking the design, the Federation's researchers and engineers created the RGC-80 GM Cannon as their final product.
