The RB-79 Ball is a mobile pod that appears in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt and its animated adaptation.
Technology and Combat Characteristics[]
The RB-79 Ball was hastily constructed to compensate for the shortage of mobile suits, and was deployed to each unit in the latter half of the One Year War. Since it is equipped with manipulator arms, it can also handle non-combat duties such as transporting supplies. Due to its relative ease of production, multiple variations were developed and deployed, such as the cannon-type and the missile launcher-type.
The Ball used by the Moore Brotherhood was equipped with a low-recoil cannon at the top, as well as a machine gun on each of its manipulator arms. It also had four thrusters on its back and one underneath, as well as numerous vernier thrusters. Among the Moore Brotherhood, they were used to collect and transport allied mobile suits that had returned from operations. The South Seas Alliance used a variant of the Ball equipped with a crane at the top to clear the battlefield of debris.

History[]
Manga[]
Multiple Balls were part of the Moore Brotherhood's fleet in the Thunderbolt Sector, recovering damaged RGM-79 GMs and engaging in combat against the Living Dead Division's fleet. Balls also participated in the battle at A Baoa Qu. During a debris clearing operation, an escape capsule containing Zeon scientist J.J. Sexton was recovered by a crane-type Ball belonging to a Federation minesweeper ship operated by the South Seas Alliance.
After the One Year War, Balls were used by Fleming Industry, a company owned by Io Fleming's family, in the reconstruction process of the Moore Brotherhood's Side 4 colonies. Balls were later deployed inside Luna II alongside GMs, RX-77 Guncannons and RGC-93 GM Cannon IIs against the Perfect Gundam piloted by Daryl Lorenz. Many Balls were also deployed as part of Konpei Island's forces to meet the approaching South Seas Alliance and their Psycho Zaku Mk-IIs.
