The QEX-04M Aegir was a large, experimental underwater-use beam weapon to be used with the MSM-01 Zaku Marine Type. It appeared in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 603. It was used by Gunther Roseman.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The QEX-04M Aegir was a prototype underwater beam weapon designed by the Principality of Zeon for use with MS-06M Zaku Marine Type. The firing of beam weapons underwater was hindered by the collision of beam particles with water molecules and the risk of a steam explosion; the Aegir was intended to circumvent this problem by firing a plasma beam that was electromagnetically decelerated to subsonic speeds.
The Aegir had an effective firing range of 2,000 meters and a maximum range of 2,800 meters. Although the Aegir had its own propulsion system, it could not operate independent of the Zaku.
History[]
In August of UC 0079 the Aegir was deployed in a series of combat test runs to effectively create beam weapon use underwater which before then was considered impossible. The objective was a Federation supply fleet at sea which the Aegir would be utilized to destroy. During the first test it would succeed with impressive results and entirely destroy its targeted ship, later the same fleet would deploy a squadron of RB-79N Fisheye to counterattack. Though the Aegir succeeded in destroying all targets (including the Fisheye) the unit itself was destroyed. Due to its poor mobility and lack of additional defensive armaments, the Aegir never moved past the test stage, though it's tests set the basis for all succeeding underwater mobile suits which almost exclusively utilized beam weaponry moving forward
