The Ptolemaeus Lunar Base is a military facility located on the Moon, introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Overview

Located on the Ptolemaeus crater, the Ptolemaeus Lunar Base was built by the Atlantic Federation for the purpose of overseeing the construction of the PLANT colonies. Following the outbreak of the First Alliance-PLANT War, the base was transformed into the military headquarters of the Earth Alliance's space force. The base received supplies from Earth via the Mass Drivers located within the territories of the Earth Alliance.

History

The Ptolemaeus Lunar Base was built in C.E. 35 by the Atlantic Federation to oversee the space colonies. It was built in the Ptolemaeus crater from which it derived its name. The trait to name moon bases after craters they are built in was carried over to future bases and cities.

When the First Alliance-PLANT War broke out between PLANT and the Earth Alliance, the base became the headquarters of the EA's Space Forces, from where they launched their attacks on PLANT. The Ptolemaeus Lunar Base was a strategically significant target in the early months of the war, with ZAFT initiating the Grimaldi Front, a month long campaign to claim supremacy on the Moon. On June 2, C.E. 70, ZAFT forces retreated from the Moon following the Battle of Endymion Crater, the final battle of the Grimaldi Front, leaving Ptolemaeus intact, and the Moon in the hands of the Earth Alliance.

By C.E. 71, ZAFT had shifted it strategy towards the Lunar Base, and sought to cripple the base by starving it of supplies from Earth by destroying the EA's Mass Drivers. This strategy proved effective, as after having lost their Mass Drives to ZAFT in the Battle of Kaohsiung, the Second Battle of Victoria, and the Battle of Porta Panama, the Lunar Base was estimated to quickly exhaust its supplies if not replenished. The EA eventually reclaimed their Mass Driver at the Victoria Base and re-established there supply route to the Moon. The base was destroyed on September 27, CE 71, the last day of the war, by ZAFT's superweapon GENESIS.
