Psycommu is a technology appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

Overview[]

During the One Year War, researchers at the Flanagan Institute discovered that Newtypes emit powerful thoughtwaves - similar to regular brainwaves, but not electrical in nature - which they called "psycho-waves". The Flanagan Institute went on to develop a mind-machine interface called the Psycommu (psycho-communicator) System, which received these thought waves and translated them into computer commands. Using this interface, a Newtype pilot could direct remote weapons and operate mobile weapons by thought alone, even through Minovsky interference.

Even by 0085, Psycommu system require the pilot to use Psycho Suit, which has an enlarged helmet in order to mount psycho receptors within the helmet. However, Alpha Psycommu, Omega Psycommu, and Kappa Psycommu do not need such. Furthermore, Omega Psycommu equipped mobile suits can even be controlled by Newtypes near but not inside the machine.

Types[]

  • Zero-Type Psycommu system
Zero Psycommu is a variant of the Psycommu system equipped in the MAN-03 Kikeroga during the One Year War. Aside from the fact that this require a Psycho Suit, nothing is currently known about it.
  • Alpha-type Psycommu System
Alpha-type psycommu system was originally developed for a mobile armor that was cancelled in GQX universe, possibly derived from the alternative counterpart. At the insistence of Col. Char Aznable, it was retrofitted into the RX-78-02 White Gundam, which was originally developed without it, turning it into gMS-α Red Gundam. The psycho receptor are now mounted along the cockpit, with concentration near the headrest. With it, the Red Gundam can control bits from a cancelled Mobile Armor. However, due to the fact that co-existence of alpha-psycommu from both Rose of Sharon (from an another universe) and Red Gundam in the same reality, their resonance activates Zeknova.
  • "Endymion Unit"/"Omega" Psycommu System
The Endymion unit, commonly known as Omega Psycommu[1] the Psycommu System Omega-type[2]was a refined and compact version of the Alpha Psycommu System, but where the Alpha-type only controlled remote weapons, the Omega-type enabled the pilot to control the mobile suit with brainwaves alone[2]. The Omega Psycommu could further enhance the pilot's reaction times and consequently the mobile suit's performance, but it could only be activated by a pilot with strong Newtype power[2].
Activation of the Omega Psycommu system involved two steps: Firstly, the "psycommu system boot device/limiter", a cassette-like activation key was inserted into a dedicated slot on the right side of the cockpit; Secondly, the pilot must have strong psychowaves to interact and unlock the system[2]. Once it was activated, the restraints that double as the head blade antenna were released, an interface for brainwave control appeared in the cockpit, and the mobile suit switched to a psycommu-controlled drive mode[1][2].
What makes Omega Psycommu system unique is that it was explictly known to be created with OOParts (Out-Of-Place Artifacts, objects that should not belong to the time period) from the other side similar to Rose of Sharon, designed to independently create Zeknova phenomenons in Omega Psycommu Overdrive. To do so, the Omega Psycommu's limiter has to be authenticated and then destroyed, which allows pilot to have direct and unrestricted control of Omega Psycommu system; all safety system is disabled. The 2 ports on the cockpit's ceiling will open and lower a seperate set of controls, while the suit's knees and shoulders will generate miniature Zeknovas. In this mode, it can be used to get around the time-freeze induced by Zeknova phenomenon, while the miniature Zeknovas can block giant beam sabers.
  • "Kappa"[3] Psycommu System
A special type of Psycommu system that is similar to the GQuuuuuuX's Omega Psycommu, installed in the gMS-κ GFreD. It enables the pilot to control the mobile suit and remote Psycommu based weapons directly with brainwaves alone. And like the Omega Psycommu, it could further enhance the capabilities of the mobile suit but usually requires a pilot with strong Newtype powers. Other than the ones mentioned, other features of this system is currently unknown.[4]
  • Bio-Sensor
The psycommu system installed onto MRX-010 Psycho Gundam. Details are unknown, but functionally identical to Zero Psycommu system and thus requires Psycho Suit.

The Psycommu system was already developed by Flanagan Institute for a while, with MAN-03 Kikeroga being one of the first Mobile Weapon being equipped, with a bit-based Large Mobile Armor being research. However, when Char captured RX-78-02 White Gundam, he persuaded Zeon to move all developments onto the Gundam; the planned bit-based Mobile Armor was scrapped, while a Psycommu system (later called alpha psycommyu) is retrofit onto the White Gundam without changing its size, and mounted the aforementioned bits onto it, creating gMS-α Red Gundam; with the system, Char can control bits remotely. However, during the Second Battle of Solomon, the Psycommu system created the Zeknova explosion; this led to strict restrictions in using Psycommu as part of the Peace Treaty, in fear of the incident happening again; all existing Psycommu mobile weapons are declared as a prohibited weapon under the peace treaty.

U.C. 0085[]

Nonetheless, in secret, both Federation and Principality of Zeon continued research in Psycommu system. By 0085, Zeon produced the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX, now equipped with Omega Psycommu system that allow its Newtype pilot to control the suit by thoughts alone, while Federation created the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam and equipped it with Bio-Sensor, and assigned it to the shell clan Twelve Olympians for testing. Furthermore, as Kycilia faction have a monopoly on Newtype and Psycommu, Gihren have to resort to use Cyber-Newtype clones.

  • The Alpha-type psycommu is implied to be identical to the psycommu install in prime-UC Elmeth.
  • The OOPart used to make Omega Psycommu is heavily implied to be Psycho-Frame, as not only both technology allow powerful newtypes to control the mobile suit with brainwaves alone, it also in turn can absorb Newtype's soul, resulting in a presence within GQuuuuuuX that implies to be either the prime or Origin version of Amuro Ray.
