Operation Ragnarök (Battle of Heaven's Base) is a conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.
Prelude[]
Following the supposed success of Operation Angel Down, and the elimination of Athrun Zala and Meyrin Hawke, who were claimed to have been planning to leak their plans,[1] ZAFT Supreme Chairman Gilbert Durandal initiated the next step in his goal of global unity and peace by exposing the existence of Logos, the secretive benefactor behind the anti-Coordinator group Blue Cosmos. Additionally, the revelation that it was the Atlantic Federation that attacked the Eurasian Federation, a fellow member of the Earth Alliance, during Berlin caused some members to rescind their membership or outright accompany ZAFT. The Republic of East Asia notably sent its fleet to accompany Durandal. Despite stating his desire to not attack them with his military, the revelation of the group caused a massive shift in power as rebel groups and mobs quickly turned against these backers, spurred on by the weariness caused by the wars they allowed to be created. Seeing as their numbers were falling and their hold weakening, Lord Djibril abandoned his home and, along with the surviving members of Logos, retreated to Heaven's Base, their final major stronghold in Iceland.[2]
The Battle[]
Hours before the start of the battle, Durandal made an ultimatum to the remainder of Logos, demanding their surrender or be destroyed. However, Djibril refused to do such a thing, preparing Heaven's Base for battle, preparing numerous GAT-01A1 Dagger, GAT-707E Forbidden Vortex, and GAT-04 Windam units, one GAT-333 Raider Full Spec, several TS-MB1B Euclid, numerous Linear Gun Tanks and five GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam, one of which was piloted by Sting Oakley, who survived the Battle of Berlin, as well as preparing the Nibelung cannon.[3]
As people around the world, including the surviving Archangel crew, who had saved Athrun and Meyrin, watched, Heaven's Base made the first move, unleashing an unprovoked flurry of firepower, which struck down most of the Republic of East Asia's frontline fleet. With no other choice, Durandal ordered their own mobile suits launched. As ZAFT advancement had been halted by the Destroy Gundams from the ground, ZAFT re-entry pods from space began their descent. In response, Nibelung was fired, completely wiping them out mid-air. As a result, the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam, piloted by Shinn Asuka, the ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam, piloted by Rey Za Burrel, and the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam, now piloted by Lunamaria Hawke, were ordered to launch.[3]
The stalemate was brought to an end by Shinn, whose SEED factor activated and allowed him to move in and personally destroy three out of the five Destroy Gundams, including Sting's. As Lunamaria was then able to rally the remaining ground ZAFT forces and cut open a path for them through the base with Rey providing her and Shinn with support. The two would also be able to down the remaining Destroy Gundams together with Lunamaria shifting to the Sword Silhouette to do so.[3] Following the fervor of the Minerva's units, ZAFT's air forces would be able to charge thanks to Lunamaria's advance while the amphibious units would also reach Heaven's Base's shore shortly after.
As the remains of the Earth Alliance fought approaching ZAFT forces, Djibril became aware of the inevitable defeat and secretly slipped away in a submarine. Outgunned and overpowered, Heaven's Base surrendered to ZAFT, the last casualty being the final Destroy Gundam, struck down by all three of the Minerva's pilots.[3]
Aftermath[]
In the aftermath of the battle, the surviving members of Logos were forced to surrender and Heaven's Base was captured by ZAFT. Lord Djibril, however, escaped capture and retreated to Orb, hoping to be protected by the Seiran family.[4] When this occurred, ZAFT demanded the fugitive be released into their custody. Despite his ally being considered a global terrorist, Orb's de-facto ruler, Yuna Roma Seiran, openly denied the photographical evidence of him welcoming Djibril, causing Durandal to launch an invasion of Orb.[4]
