Operation Maelstrom is a conflict between the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) and the Axis Zeon over the control of Side 7's Gryps II Colony Laser, and is one of the final pitched battles that ended the Gryps War, featured in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Prelude[]

After learning that the Axis astroid’s trajectory put it on a course right into the lunar city of Granada, the AEUG ceased all relations with Axis Zeon. Requiring a means to move the asteroid off its path, a plan was put in place to capture the Gryps II Colony Laser that was currently in the hands of Axis Zeon following the Destruction of the Gate of Zedan.

The plan was to encircle Gryps II from five separate points, slowly moving inwards and taking control of the colony laser. In order to ensure the success of the Operation, it was deemed necessary that Haman Karn be unable to command her forces during the battle. To that end, Kamille Bidan was ordered to use his Newtype abilities to draw Haman out during the battle.[1]

The Battle[]

Before the start of the operation, Kamille launched in the Zeta Gundam. However, Katz Kobayashi and Fa Yuiry followed him in the G-Defenser and the Methuss without permission.

After having confirmation of the Zeta Gundam’s launch, the main AEUG attack force moved out. The AEUG deployed its mobile suit forces to begin encircling Gryps II, and Axis Zeon defenses began countering them. However due to Axis Zeon’s lack of combat experience, they began firing before the AEUG mobile suits were within range, and while Axis forces were numerically superior to the AEUG, they were spread out too much and too unevenly. The AEUG’s first objective was to disable the colony laser. They located and destroyed both the colony’s Microwave Receiver Panel and Transformer, cutting off the colony laser’s electrical system.[1]

During the battle, Haman Karn sensed Kamille focusing on her, distracting her from commanding the battle. To remedy this, Haman launched in her AMX-004 Qubeley, playing right into the AEUG’s trap. Upon exiting the Gwanban, she was attacked by the G-Defenser, to no avail. Before she could fire back on the G-Defenser, she was intercepted by Kamille’s Zeta Gundam. Haman deployed the Qubeley’s Funnels, bombarding the Zeta Gundam with beams. The Zeta Gundam broke through the barrage, and meet the Qubeley in close-combat. Before the battle could continue, the Zeta Gundam’s Bio-Sensor, the Qubeley’s Psycommu, and both Haman’s and Kamille’s Newtype auras began to resonate with each other. The result was that Kamille’s and Haman’s minds began to synchronize, allowing them to view the other’s memories and communicate with each other. Kamille believed this phenomenon to be proof that human beings could reach a level of complete understanding with each other. However, Haman, aggravated by the intrusion into her mind, forcibly terminates the connection.[1]

Back to reality, Haman attacked Kamille with her beam guns and then charged toward him with her beam saber. Kamille meanwhile pleaded with Haman, telling her that they might truly be able to understand each other if things were a bit different. But Haman refused to accept Kamille’s words. Before the Qubely could strike the Zeta Gundam with its beam saber, Kats in the G-Defenser launched an attack. The Qubeley dodged and sliced off the G-Defenser's beam cannon when it came back around. Following this, the Qubeley fired at the Zeta Gundam, but the shot was intercepted by the Methuss, at the cost of its right leg. Enraged by the danger to his friends, Kamille fired the Zeta Gundam’s grappling cables, ensnaring the Qubeley, and charged forward with his beam saber. But, before he made contact, Kamille heard an echo of Haman’s subconscious, telling him that deep down she believed that people could really come to understand one another. The Zeta Gundam’s beam saber sliced through the Qubeley’s shoulder, and Haman broke away from the cables and escaped, fleeing back to her ship.[1]

Kamille ordered the G-Defenser and Methuss to head back to the Argama while he rendezvoused with the main attack force. Kamille met up with Emma Sheen in her Gundam Mk-II, and the two took out several Gaza-C. Soon after, they were ordered to head back to the Argama, the majority of the operation having been fulfilled, and leaving the mopping up to the Nemos. A few hours later, the remaining Axis fleet escaped from the battlefield and the AEUG took complete control of Gryps II.[1]

Aftermath[]

After having taken control of Gryps II, the Argama headed to the moon to intercept Axis before it hit Granada while the rest of the fleet remained.[2]
