Operation British is a military operation featured in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin MSD Cucuruz Doan's Island manga, the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin OVA, its television recut.
Prelude[]
After the Dawn Rebellion, relations between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation broke down. When Zeon declared its independence, Side 2's government, Hatte opposed this. Unwilling to let this stand, Gihren Zabi ordered a plan of immeasurable scale by that point. Not only would he try to make an example of Side 2, but he would turn them against the Federation.
The Battle[]
Subduing Hatte[]
As Hatte had been on the Earth Federation's side since before the outbreak of war, in clear opposition to the Principality of Zeon, Hatte was targeted for attack at roughly the same time as the strategic lunar cities of Granada and Von Braun.[1] At the beginning of the hostilities, Commander Ramba Ral led a force of mobile suits in an attack on Hatte. Aside from the capital banchi, Island Iffish, almost all its colonies were captured or destroyed.[2]
Colony Drop[]
Following the successful defeat of Hatte, Dozle ordered for both Island Iffish's exterior to be coated with heat-resistant materials before sending the colony on a crash course towards the Federation's base at Jaburo. Ral was disgusted when he heard what was about to occur and formally resigned, forcing Dozle to accomplish the mission himself. The residents of the colony were first killed using GG Gas before the colony was equipped with thrusters by the Zeon forces and sent towards the Federation's base at Jaburo.
Vice Admiral Tianem, who was on his way to skirmish with Zeon, was horrified to see the colony moving and rallied all his forces to try and destroy the object before it could reach Earth. Their efforts were to no avail as they would only manage to divert Island Iffish's course. By January 16, the colony burned in Earth's atmosphere and split into three major parts; the first destroying southern Australia, the second landing at Canada and sending debris all across North America, and the final landing at the Pacific Ocean and causing earthquakes and tsunamis towards East Asia.
Aftermath[]
In a rough estimate of lives lost to either Island Iffish's impact, or the starvation, disease, and chaos that resulted from its fall, the death toll on Earth alone was nearly equal to half its total population. In contrast to Gihren's hopes that this would show the Federation and the other colonies of their inferiority to Zeon, this act only hardened their resistance against Zeon as they now believed that siding with Zeon meant certain death regardless. Even Degwin Sodo Zabi, the principality's leader and Gihren's father, was furious over the colony drop as they were meant to be fighting a holy war for the independence of spacenoids as a whole.
Tianem's fleet eventually regrouped with Admiral Johann Ibrahim Revil's main fleet as they planned to punish Zeon at Loum near Side 5. During negotiations between both sides in the Antarctic Treaty the memory of Operation British still lingered in the minds of all present, and the weaponization of entire colonies was among the acts strictly prohibited by both sides.
