The One Year War (一年戦争 Ichinen Sensō?), was the first major conflict of the GQ timeline, fought between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation from January 3rd, 0079 to January 3rd, 0080.

Within series, history prior to the Gundam Jack incident (U.C.0079.09.18) is considered identical to that of Main timeline and/or Origin timeline, and is referenced as such within series. Please see relevant page as needed.

Chronology[]

On U.C.0079.01.04, The Principality of Zeon launched an attack by attempting to drop the devastated colony of Side 2, which had already suffered a catastrophic loss of life due to nerve gas, onto the Earth Federation's headquarters in Jaburo, South America. On 0079.01.08 The Tianem Fleet of the Earth Federation attempted to intercept the falling colony but was unable to stop its descent. The colony ultimately strayed off its intended path and crashed into Sydney, Australia. On 0079.01.15 The Principality of Zeon makes another effort using the remnants of Side 5. However, this plan was thwarted by the Earth Federation Forces during the Battle of Loum. On 0079.04.01 the Federation initiates the V Project to counter Zeon’s mobile suits.

On U.C.0079.09.18, Char Aznable, the "Red Comet" of the Principality of Zeon, infiltrated Side 7 and discovers the Earth Federation Forces' new Gundam. He quickly seizes the unit and also succeeds in capturing the Pegasus, an amphibious assault ship. The Federation deploys the 01 Gundam to try to recapture the Gundam, but is defeated. After that, the Principality continues to analyze the Gundam, and mobile suit development evolves and advances dramatically, leading to the creation of the Gelgoog.

At the same time, research on the "Newtypes," a race of humans with heightened insight and foresight, continues, and the Gundam was repainted red for Char and equipped with a psycommu system and bits. The skillful paired-teamwork tactics Char Aznable shows with his new friend Challia Bull eventually came to be known as M.A.V. (Mav). An unidentified anomalous space craft appeared in cislunar space, and was captured by Zeon forces and studied at the lunar city of Granada as the "Rose of Sharon".

After two battles on Solomon, the Principality forces finally cornered the Federation forces, and on U.C.0079.12, launched an operation to assault on Luna II. Led by M'Quve, he led a majority of Zeon's fleet, supported by Mass-produced Big Zam that is under Gihren's control, but due to personal reason excluded Char's team from participating. However, at the same time, the Federation forces carried out a plan to drop Solomon on Granada to cut off Zeon's lifeline. As there are no ships that can be spared except Char's, his fleet headed to intercept it, but it was no longer possible to change the course of the fall---just when everyone had given up, a phenomenon called Zeknova caused Solomon to change its trajectory, preventing damage to Granada.

With this battle as a turning point, the One Year War ended with the victory of the Principality forces, and the Federation signs a truce with Zeon, and withdraws its forces from space. However, the whereabouts of Char Aznable and the Red Gundam's remains are unknown to this day.

Legacy[]

  • The space colonies as well as Lunar cities achieved independence from Earth; The Earth Federation had lost significant influence in space.
  • Earth's temperature dropped due to nuclear winter.
  • A treaty called the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) imposed strict restrictions on the military operations of both Zeon and the Federation within the independent territories of the Sides.
  • While the precise term for the End of The War Treaty is unknown, due to the Zeknova incident, a clause that made psycommu systems forbidden weapons was added, joining those of NBC weapon and large-mass weapons such as Colony drops.
  • Challia Bull notes that the Zeon Space Forces are facing significant resource constraints.
    • Zeon decommissioned many of it's older mobile suits and sold them as surplus on the civilian market as a way to recoup resources.
  • Both Gihren and Kycilila Zabi survived. However, Degwin Zabi died by unknown means, with Kycilila suspecting Gihren. Due to this, a fierce rivalry has emerged between them as they vie for the title of the next Sovereign of Zeon. Both have resorted to sending assassins and spies to undermine each other while simultaneously advancing their own covert Newtype projects.
  • During the war, Garma Zabi, commander of Zeon’s Earth Attack Force, had resigned from Zeon's military and Zeon politics.
  • M'Quve is noted to have attained the rank of Vice-Admiral, a position previously held by the late Dozle Zabi.
  • Mash of The Black Tri-stars left the military and used his fame to be elected to the mayor of a colony. His remaining comrades were kicked out of Zeon Forces by M'Quve, and are now working in junk trading.
  • Remains of Solomon, later renamed Confeito, continues to orbit over Granada.
  • Due to Operation British and Battle of Loum, many refugees and orphans migrated to Side 6. Some of those that have scholarship from Zeon can migrate to Principality of Zeon.

0079.01.04 The Principality of Zeon forces began Operation British.

Side 2 colony, Island Iffish, began its descent to Earth.

0079.01.08 The Earth Federation (EFF)'s Tianem fleet reached the colony. A naval battle with the Principality fleet broke out.
0079.01.10 The first half of the colony, dropped with Jaburo as its target, fell on Sydney. The remainder fell in the Pacific Ocean and the North American continent.
0079.01.11 Side 6 declared neutrality.
0079.01.13 The Principality Forces resumed Operation British.
0079.01.15 The Principality Forces began the Invasion of Loum (the Battle of Loum).
0079.01.16 The Black Tri-Stars, a mobile suit platoon of the Principality Forces, took General Revil of the EFF prisoner.
0079.01.28 The Earth Federation Government decided to accept the ceasefire treaty from the Principality Government.
0079.01.31 Revil, who had been captured, returned to the Federation side and gave a speech.

The EFF did not call a ceasefire even after the treaty was signed, and declared a fight to the end.

0079.02.07 The Principality Forces began its descent to Earth.
0079.04.01 In order to counter the Principality Forces' mobile suits, the EFF launched "Operation V".

They also launched the "Vinson Plan", a naval reorganization plan that took mobile suits usage into account.

0079.05.17 The Principality Forces completed the space fortress "Solomon".
0079.06 The Principality Forces established the Flanagan Institute.
0079.06.30 The Principality Forces completed the space fortress "A Baoa Qu."
0079.07.07 The EFF constructed the assault landing ship "Pegasus."
0079.08 The EFF began final testing of Gundam and other new mobile suits at Side 7.

The Principality forces led by Char infiltrated Side 7. They captured the Federation's new Gundam and the Pegasus.
The Gundam operated by Char also engaged in combat with the 01 Gundam, destroying it. At this time, Gene did not participate in the operation due to a malfunction of his Zaku.

The captured Gundam and Pegasus were delivered to Dozle.
A joint team between Kycilia and Dozle began analyzing the Gundam.
The previous plan to build a large mobile armor equipped with Psycommu was canceled.
The Pegasus was renamed and repainted as Sodon, and incorporated into the Space Attack Force.

Garma Zabi, commander of the Principality's Earth Forces, left the Principality's military for personal reasons.

0079.10-11 The Principality Forces, under the EFF's attacks, withdrew from Odessa and North America, which they had temporarily occupied.

The Principality forces carried out a landing mission on Jaburo Base, where the EFF headquarters was located, and then withdrew.

The EFF mass-produced the Guncannon, whose prototype was left behind, as a Light-type Guncannon.
The Principality Forces began developing a mobile suit by reverse engineering the Gundam.
The Zeonic MS-14 lost the development race, and a simplified Gundam MS was officially adopted.
Meanwhile, at Dozle Zabi's request, the Big Zam also went into mass production.

In Granada on the moon, Flanagan Institute began equipping units with Psycommu.

The First Battle of Solomon broke out. The EFF used the Solar System. Dozle sortied in the Big Zam 1, but was defeated. Solomon fell into the EFF's hand.
Challia Bull returned from Jupiter and met Char Aznable.
The Psycommu-equipped Gundam launched a bombing attack on Solomon while also using Bits. Challia Bull also deployed.
Challia received the mobile armor Kikeroga.

The Principality Forces, with M'Quve as their commander-in-chief, began the battle for Luna II.
While accepting defeat, Wakkein of the EFF began a plan to drop Confeito (Solomon) on Granada.

Char's forces, who had been on stand-by under M'Quve's orders, were ordered to defend Granada.

The Second Battle of Solomon began. Char launched a surprise attack on Solomon with Sodon.
Char's forces failed in their operation to prevent Solomon from falling, but a phenomenon known as "Zeknova" occurred, and Wakkein's plan was thwarted.
The EFF fell at Luna II. The Federation Government proposed ceasefire negotiations.

0080.01.03 With the complete withdrawal of the EFF, the One Year War ended.
