The OZ-06MS Leo is a mass-produced general purpose mobile suit introduced in the TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The OZ-06MS Leo is an MS developed using data from the OZ-00MS Tallgeese, which was the first combat MS to be created.[1] Its most notable difference from the Tallgeese is that the Leo can be piloted by the average soldier.[1] In addition to being highly productive and versatile, the MS can adapt to both ground and space units by changing equipment.[1] Equipped with an abundance of armaments, such as the 105mm Rifle, Dober Gun and two types of Beam Rifles, the MS is supplied with various options for space and high maneuverability, and is able to cope with all kinds of missions.[1]

Armaments[]

  • Shield
Equipped with the same type of circular shield as the OZ-OOMS Tallgeese.[1] It is attached to the left shoulder with a joint on the back, enabling the MS to keep both hands free.[1] It also functions as a saber holder and can store two sabers.[1]
  • Beam Saber
Melee weapons for close range combat.[1] A beam blade is generated from the cylindrical handle.[1] They are said to be effective even against titanium alloy armor.[1]
  • 105mm Rifle
A physical projectile weapon and one of the main armaments for the MS.[1] It is often used with both arms and is very accurate.[1] A radar is attached over the muzzle and its cylindrical magazine houses approximately 100 rounds.[1] The rear end of its stock can split into two.[2][3]
  • Beam Rifle (Normal Type)
A beam firearm originally developed for the Leo Space Type, it can also be used by the basic Leo on the ground.[2] The weapon is designed with a focus on firepower and is powered by a removable energy pack.[2][3]
  • Beam Rifle (Shorty Type)
Depending on the situation, this short length firearm can be used instead of the beam rifle (normal type).[2] Both weapons share the same basic construction, but the shorty type is designed with a focus on rate of fire and ease of use.[2] The shorty type is also powered by a removable energy pack.[2]
  • Colony Type Beam Rifle[4]
A third type of beam rifle used by the Leo. Despite its name, it was used by both standard Leos and Leo Space Types. It has a square scope, a smaller energy pack than the normal type beam rifle, and can be fitted with either a long barrel or a short barrel. Nothing else is known about it, but it is the same type as the beam rifle used by the Tragos and the "phantom rifle" used by the Tallgeese in the first opening.
  • Bazooka
An optional weapon for ranged bombardment, it has a wide attack radius and is usable on earth as well as in space.[2][3] It can fire various types of rounds, including grenades and armor-piercing shells. Due to its length and large recoil, the weapon is held with both arms and sits over the right shoulder when in use.[2] It features the same type of sensor as in the Leo's head, allowing the weapon to have high accuracy.[2][3]
  • Dober Gun
A long-range firearm, it is similar to the weapon used by Tallgeese.[2] When in use, the rear end of the gun is mounted onto the Leo's shoulder via a shoulder attachment and its trigger is held in hand. This is the only weapon in the Leo's arsenal that can damage gundanium alloy.[2] Although powerful, it does have a huge recoil when fired. Despite this, it is still possible for a Leo to use two Dober Guns.[5]
  • Mega Beam Cannon
A large beam cannon that a Leo Space Type used to shoot a shuttle in the first episode's opening narration.[4]
  • Shoulder Cannon
A pair of beam cannons mounted on differently shaped shoulder armor. Depending on sources, the beam cannons are said to be for close combat or for artillery combat. The turrets can rotate freely.

Equipment[]

  • Space Type Backpack
A space backpack equipped with a large propellant tank and four verniers in the rotatable tips for attitude control. The mobile suit's main propulsion is still generated by the three thrusters at the waist.
  • Parachute Pack
An optional equipment attached to the back of the Leo, it can deploy three parachutes simultaneously to slow the mobile suit's descent after being dropped from the transport planes and is jettisoned upon landing.
  • Mobile Doll System
A system that allows mobile suits to act autonomously. The Leo was used to test the Mobile Doll control system, and had a number of cables connected to its back to enable control via an external computer system.
  • Flight Unit
When equipped with the Flight Unit, the Leo is called the Leo Flight Unit Type or the Leo High Mobility Type. This equipment consisted of a back-mounted flight module with foldable wings and booster units mounted on the thighs for in-atmospheric use. The wings unfold when used and are installed with turbofan engines that provide propulsion power during flight. The thigh boosters are for takeoff and acceleration. Since its flight range is short, the mobile suit is sometimes equipped with propellant filled drop tanks under the wings. Although the Leo Flight Unit Type's flight performance is inferior to the Aries and Taurus, it still showed the high versatility of the Leo.

History[]

The Leo was the first mass-produced mobile suit developed by OZ, and has been in operation for several decades with repeated minor changes. In A.C. 195, Zechs Merquise used a Leo to engage the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam just after it entered the atmosphere, and managed to trap the Gundam with it, sinking both mobile suits into the sea. Odel Bernett uses it when escorting MO-V. The Leo was later outperformed as a mass production mobile suit by the unmanned Mobile Dolls. Despite this, it served as the counterpart to the White Fang's WF-02MD Virgo II during the Eve Wars. After the Eve Wars, it was hardly used as a military weapon due to the trend of disarmament, and became a humanoid heavy machine.

During the "Mariemaia Incident" in A.C. 196, two Leo Space Types were seized by Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell when they infiltrated the X18999 colony, and dealt a heavy blow to the enemy Leo forces. However, they were intercepted and defeated by Chang Wufei's XXXG-01S2 Altron Gundam and Trowa Barton's MMS-01 Serpent.

Variants[]

  • Leo Early Type: The initial mass-produced version of the Leo. It features a simpler head design, less armor on the knees and ankles and has differently designed shoulders without the extra armor plates. Despite its age, this version of the Leo was still in use in more remote areas of Earth, including Colonel Bundt's breakaway nation in former China. Its pilots include Major Nanaki and Trowa Barton.
  • Leo Cannon Type: A variant of the Leo with a pair of shoulder cannons, it was operated by a number of officers and commanders.
  • Leo Space Type: A variant equipped with the space type backpack to operate in a zero-g environment. It is sometimes depicted with additional shoulder verniers. In the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers, the World National Army deployed an enhanced model that has additional thrusters on the thighs.
  • Leo Flight Unit Type:[6] Also known as Leo High Mobility Type, it a Leo equipped with the Flight Unit.
  • Leo Mobile Doll System Experimental Type: A mobile suit used to test the Mobile Doll system, it has a number of cables connected to its back to enable control via external computer system. In the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Wing G-UNIT Operation Galiarest, the White Fang deployed Leo MD units that were capable of full autonomous action without cables.
  • Reconnaissance Type Leo: An OZ Prize reconnaissance MS featured in the manga New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit. Also known as EWAC Leo, it is purple in color, has no shoulder armor, and its entire head is a giant radome, with three square camera eyes in a vertical line. It is armed with a mini machine gun.
  • Leo Valder Farkill Custom: Featured in Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit, it is the custom machine that Valder Farkill was piloting before he joined OZ Prize. Valder was dubbed the "Dark General of Destruction" for the results he achieved with this jet-black machine. Although its appearance is distinct from other Leos, very little is known about its specifications.
  • G Leo: Featured in Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit, it is one of the last two mock-up models left on the MO-V resource satellite and is piloted by Odin Bernett. It looks like a Leo Space type, but has been modified to Odin's specifications, with the numbers "01" painted on its right shoulder and chest, a V-shaped antenna on its head, and a "H" shaped duct on its mouth that resembles a Gundam's. It is armed with a 105mm machine gun that is loaded with 10 paint rounds and a vertical shield.
  • G Leo 02: Featured in Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit, it is one of the last two mock-up models left on the MO-V resource satellite and is piloted by Odel Bernett. It has a similar appearance as the Leo Space type, with the numbers "02" painted on its right shoulder. It is armed with a 105mm machine gun that is loaded with 10 paint rounds and a circular shield.
  • Leo Type II (Chimera): Introduced in the novel New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop, the Type II was an early production model of the Space Leo used by the UESA space force (Cosmo Arma), designed for escorting transport ships. Due to the large number of rebel conspirators within the UESA military, a large number of these units were also used by rebels.
  • Leo Type III (New Chimera): An improved variant of the Leo Type II.
  • Leo Type IV (Greif): Featured in Frozen Teardrop and Glory of the Losers. This is a special, dedicated machine for the OZ Specials that goes beyond the realm of mass-produced models, disregarding ease of production. It is white in color, has almost the same armament as the Tallgeese and various verniers on its back and hips. Its design combines the heavy equipment of the Leo with the high mobility of the Aries. The equipped cannon has comparable power as the medium-range cannon of the Tragos, and this weapon can be mounted on both shoulders to increase the mobile suit's attack power. Rebels at the Marius Plant of the Lunar Factory used black-painted units (Schwarz Greif) in their rebellion in A.C. 186.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • It is named after the fifth Zodiac sign, Leo which means "lion".
  • Despite being featured in rough lineart, the Leo Space Type's shoulder-mounted verniers are only depicted in the 1st episode's prologue animation sequence.
  • Due to the lack of a neck or a visible seam separating the head from the torso, the Leo is almost always depicted as if it is unable to turn its head, meaning it would have to turn its entire body in order to look in different directions. A small number of scenes and the Gundam Universe figure give it the ability to turn its head by adding a seam right under the head sensor and rear head vents (colored red on the standard-colored variant) in defiance of its other depictions. The High Grade After Colony model kit mounts its head on a ball joint, but the rectangular collar piece being mounted to the front of the head renders it unable to turn.
