Nuclear Missile is a weapon of mass-destruction introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Technical Overview[]
A Nuclear Missile uses a thermonuclear warhead, possessing a destructive yield in the scale of megatons. It has been shown that a single missile can destroy a PLANT colony like Junius Seven. When fired en masse, even a large base like Boaz can be severely damaged.
History[]
First Alliance-PLANT War[]
On Febuary 14, C.E. 70, a nuclear missle was fired at the PLANT colony Junius Seven by the Earth Alliance Agamemnon-class carrier Roosevelt, under orders from Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael.[1] The destruction of the colony resulted in the deaths of 243,721 civilians in what would be known as the Bloody Valentine Incident, begining the First Alliance-PLANT War.[2] Following this event, PLANT developed the Neutron Jammer, a device capable of disrupting nuclear fission, and deployed them in large numbers across the Earth Sphere during Operation Uroboros.[3][4]
The effects of the Neutron Jammers prevented the Earth Alliance from using nuclear missiles from the remainder of the war, until they acquired the Neutron Jammer Canceller during the Battle of Mendel.[5] After equipping their missiles with N-Jammer Cancellers, the Earth Alliance launched Operation Elvis, a major campaign to destroy ZAFT's major military bases and the PLANT Colonies through nuclear assault. The EA's nuclear taskforce, the Peacemaker Force, deployed several TS-MA2 Moebius mobile armors armed with nuclear missiles during the Battle of Boaz, in which they severely damaged the ZAFT space base.[1] However, during the Second Battle of Jachin Due, the missiles were intercepted by the Three Ships Alliance, preventing the destruction of the PLANT Colonies before they wiped out the entire Peacemaker Force.[1][6]
Second Alliance-PLANT War[]
At the start of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the Earth Alliance once again launched a nuclear attack on the PLANT Colonies during the Battle of Aprilius One, using the nuclear-capable GAT-04+Mk438/B Multi Striker Windams. The Multi Striker Windams launched their nuclear missiles towards Aprilius One, PLANT's capital, but they were all prematurely detonated by ZAFT's Neutron Stampeder.[7]
Foundation Conflict[]
In C.E. 75, during a joint operation between Compass, the Eurasian Federation, and the Kingdom of Foundation to root out a Blue Cosmos base in Eldore, the Foundation's Black Knight Squad infiltrated behind Eurasian lines and hijacked a Eurasian missile launcher, then launched three GLCM Mk 70 tactical nuclear cruise missiles in a false flag attack. Although one of them was intercepted and destroyed by Lunamaria Hawke's ZGMF-2025/F GELGOOG Menace, the remaining two managed to slip through and obliterated Ishtaria (the Foundation's capital) and Eldore, respectively.[8]

Notes & trivia[]
- The name and design of the GLCM Mk 70 is reminiscent of the nuclear-capable BGM-109G Ground Launched Cruise Missile.
- In reality, nuclear missiles will not explode in spectacular fashion when in space as depicted in the anime. Since there's no atmosphere in outer space, the shockwave and fireball are absent. Instead, the explosion will release a huge amount of radiation along with an electromagnetic pulse.[9] A space colony like Junius Seven will not have been blasted to pieces, however its life support systems will most likely malfunction, causing everyone to die from oxygen deprivation.
