Nika Nanaura (ニカ・ナナウラ Nika Nanaura?) is a character in Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury. She is a second-year student in the mechanical department at Asticassia School of Technology, who belongs to Earth House.[2]

Personality & Character[]

Nika is very kind and compassionate, often willing to accept new people and help them with any issues they face. She was the first student to greet Suletta upon her arrival at Asticassia and helped her get to first duel as soon as she asked,[3] and she introduced her to the rest of the Earth House despite her being a Spacian.[4]

Nika loves mecha and is very curious about Suletta's Gundam Aerial. She has outstanding maintenance skills, and is proud of herself for customizing Chuchu's Demi Trainer.[2] She tends to get very excited over mechanics and technical details, often asking a flurry of questions when talking about them.[5] She is also modest, usually deflecting praise people give her regarding her mechanical skills.

Despite not being the formal leader of the Earth House, she is often treated as the de-facto leader for taking initiative and trying to mediate conflicts between members of her House. She also often helps her friends with their personal issues, such as encouraging Suletta to not worry about the keychains she got for Miorine[6] and gently nudging Miorine to be more calm with Suletta.[7]

Nika is very conflict-averse. In addition to mediating arguments between House members, she also tries to defuse bullying situations by refusing to fight back and acquiescing to what is asked. There are hints that she would enjoy pushing back more but restrains herself, such as taking glee when Chuchu beats up two Spacian bullies.[4]

However, she is also prone to hiding things from the other Earth House members, particularly details about her past. When her personal conflicts escalate, she tends to leave without warning[8][9] and tries to handle things herself so as to not burden anyone else with her issues, which can leave her alone in dangerous situations and frustrate her friends.

History[]

Nika Ep14 Flashback

Nika on Earth learning about the chance to go to Asticassia

Nika was an orphan who grew up in a poor environment on Earth, not knowing who her parents were or where she was born. She worked in scrap and mechanics factories throughout her childhood. At some point, she became acquainted with the Dawn of Fold, and Naji acted as a father figure to her[6]. When she was presented with an offer to attend the Asticassia School of Technology, she was excited at the chance to finally go to a school and live out her dreams.[10] Shaddiq Zenelli promised to bring her in to the school on the condition that she serve as a go-between for the Dawn of Fold and his own faction. Shaddiq set up a fake corporation to sponsor her entry into the school, and she joined the Earth House.[9]

As a mechanic of the Earth House, she oversaw many of their larger projects, including customizing Chuchu's Demi Trainer.[2] While a student, she continued facilitating meetings and discussions for Shaddiq as a go-between.[6]

Meeting Suletta[]

Nika was the first student to greet Suletta Mercury on her arrival at Asticassia, although she hesitated to intervene when a group of students begin teasing her. Later, she assisted Suletta in joining the duel between Guel Jeturk and Miorine Rembran by giving her access to a scooter, although she told her housemates that she had only helped a little.[3]

After Suletta was apprehended, a school administrator scolded Nika for lending our her tablet notebook to her. She asked when Suletta would come back, but the administrator said it was not her concern as an Earthian, and she clenched her notebook behind his back. While discussing Suletta's sudden appearance with Martin and Chuchu, two schoolgirls ordered them to move and spit on her food. Nika calmly said they would all leave the table and walked away without pushing back, much to Chuchu's shock.[11]

She later ran into Suletta in the hallway and expressed much excitement over the Aerial, barraging Suletta with questions about its mechanics and capabilities until Guel and other Jeturk students interrupted them. She watched her duel against Guel with the rest of the House.[5]

The Spotting Exam[]

Nika Smiles to Chuchu

Nika persuading Chuchu to accept Suletta

When Suletta attempted to find classmates to help her with the spotting exam, Nika said she was already paired up but introduced her to the rest of the Earth House to find someone who could help. However, when Chuchu arrived and lashed out at Suletta for being a Spacian, Nika held her back with Lilique and tried to calm her down, but Suletta left the group frightened. Later, when Chuchu got in a fistfight with two Spacian bullies who were making Suletta cry, Nika remarked how it felt good to see her take them down. She formally invited Suletta to join the Earth House and persuaded Chuchu to accept her with a smile.[4]

Mechanic for the Aerial and GUND-ARM, Inc.[]

After Suletta joined Earth House, Nika looked closer at the Aerial and was enthralled with its technical specifications. She later helped Suletta ready the Aerial for her date with Elan and held off Miorine from trying to stop her.[12] Nika came up with the idea to use spare parts to build the Mirasoul Flight Unit with the rest of the Earth House in preparation for Suletta's duel with Elan Ceres. When Miorine admonished Suletta but encouraged her to keep going,, Nika asked if she had already made up with her.[13]

Nika and Martin were invited to the Incubation Party by Miorine and Suletta, and she was amazed by all of the Mobile Suits and opulence. As she struggled with choosing from the fancy food, Shaddiq helped her pick some out. He thanked Nika for the help she's provided him, which she nervously tried to brush off.[14]

After the Incubation Party, Nika remarked to the others how impressed she was with Miorine's abilities, and Miorine walked in and proclaims that she will set up GUND-ARM, Inc. in the Earth House. In class the next day, when Chuchu angrily asked Nika why they should accept Miorine forcing them to work for her, Nika said it could help both her learn more about the Aerial and all of them earn respect from the Spacians.

Nika Hugs Chuchu

Nika hugging Chuchu after she talks about helping her hometown

When the Earth House debated whether to sell weapons as GUND-ARM, Inc., Nika tried to keep Nuno and Ojelo from fighting. Chuchu asked if Nika was okay with them making mobile weapons that the Spacians could use, and she could not muster a response. Nika struggled to get Ojelo and Nuno to make up afterwards.

She and the rest of the House were reinvigorated when Miorine presented the option of using GUND tech for medical purposes. After the students had finished setting up the company, Chuchu described wanting to help develop and sell the medical technology to support her own family and the people who suffered mining accidents in her hometown, and Nika hugged her.[15]

After Shaddiq modified the school rules to shut down the company, Nika confronted him on her own and called him disgusting for shuttering everyone's hopes and hard work. Shaddiq rebuffed her, saying that the matter did not concern a go-between like her but that he would try to persuade Miorine again. She provided technical support during the Earth House duel against Grassley and celebrated her house's victory.[8]

Over the next two weeks, Nika continued to help GUND-ARM, Inc. develop its technologies, overseeing Suletta testing a prosthetic legs walker. She talked with Suletta later that day about her wish list and encouraged her to share the keychains she bought for Miorine. She later helped Shaddiq set up a call with Naji, although they spoke directly without her intermediating. Shaddiq thanked her for helping and said her father figure sent his greetings.[6]

Attack on Plant Quetta[]

Nika traveled with the rest of the Earth House to Plant Quetta to pick up the modified Gundam Aerial. Miorine said that once their current project was done, she wanted Nika to take the lead on the next one and surpass even Belmeria, but Nika said she was overestimating her abilities. As she discussed the loading preparations with Miorine, Nika asked if something happened between her and Suletta. Miorine grumbled that Nika was implying she did something wrong, but Nika encouraged her to be gentler to Suletta, saying that not everyone could be like her. When a terrorist attack began on Plant Quetta, Nika realized the Dawn of Fold may be involved.[7]

Nika discovered by Martin

Nika reacting in shock as Martin finds her communicating with the Dawn of Fold

As the Dawn of Fold attacked the ships in the hangar around the Earth House ship, Nika stayed behind on board as her classmates evacuate when she recognized the use of physical ammunition as a sign that the attackers were the Dawn. She flashed a light signal to Norea Du Noc in the Lfrith Thorn, who recognized it as an ally symbol and abandoned her attack on their ship. However, Nika's act was discovered by Martin, who questioned what she did to drive them off, leaving her shocked.[16]

Post-Quetta and the Rumble Ring[]

Two weeks after the attack at Quetta, Nika remained deeply depressed, losing focus during her support job at a duel and standing apart from the others as they talked about the upcoming Open Campus event. She bristled when Chuchu described the battle as an act of terrorism.

Later that evening, Nika worked alone in a hanger and was startled by Suletta walking up to her. She tried to say nothing was bothering her, but Suletta said she wanted to advise her as a friend. Nika complemented Suletta's bravery during the attack while saying she herself was too scared to do anything. Suletta responded that she was scared too, but she pushed forward with the guidance of her mother and her motto reminding her to gain more by not running, and she encouraged Nika to try the same.

When Norea and Sophie Pulone showed up to join the Earth house, Nika was shocked to see them there. Nika confronted Norea later that night, saying that the company she and Sophie were registered under was a dummy set up by Shaddiq, which Norea confirmed was just like her situation. Nika ordered Norea to leave so no one else at the Earth House would get hurt. Norea commented that Nika was acting like a victim and, noting how she wanted to act as a bridge between Earth and Space, held a knife to her chest and warned her to stay out of their way so they could each accomplish their own goals.

Nika attempted to find some record of Norea and Sophie's communications but was unable to, and she lamented her uselessness as a go-between. Martin confronted her about what she did at Quetta and asked what she was hiding, but Nika lied that she only sent out a general SOS and continued ignoring his protestations.

Nika Injured by Sophie

Nika injured after Sophie kicks her arm

Later that night, Nika attempted to blackmail Norea and Sophie into leaving by threatening to expose the dummy companies for all three of them, but Sophie jumped down and kicked her arm in, knocking her to the ground and crushing her notebook. Norea unlocked the Pharact and accused Nika of being idealistic for hoping she could change relations between the Earth and Space on her own. Nika protested that she was not making light of the situation, but Norea said Nika needed to pay them back for going to Asticassia, and she prepared to crush her with the Pharact's foot. However, Suletta drove in with a scooter and lifted Nika out of the way. Nika encouraged Suletta to run and save herself, but Suletta held firm and challenged the Earth Witches to a duel.[9]

After the Earth Witches backed down, Nika lied to the Earth House and said the hangar damage and her broken arm were due to an accident she caused. The next day, she had a sling over her arm and talked with Suletta outside Miorine's greenhouse. She described how she felt hopeful getting to come to the school to live out her dreams after growing up as a poor orphan, but she declined to tell Suletta more out of fear that she would cause her more trouble. Nika said she was only projecting her own hopes onto Suletta when she first met her, and she resolved to handle the Earth Witches by herself, telling Suletta to continue enjoying school.

During the Rumble Ring, when Norea and Sophie attacked with the Lfrith-Thorn and Lfrith-Ur, Nika called the Front Management Company to confess on her ties to the Dawn of Fold but was stopped in the act by Henao Jazz on Shaddiq's behalf. After the conclusion of the battle between the Aerial and the Lfrith-Ur, the Front Management Company detained all the students of Earth House, meaning to arrest Nika as a suspected terrorist due to Martin tipping them off.[10]

Captured by Grassley House[]

Nika was captured by Shaddiq's group and brought to their headquarters. Norea pummeled her, blaming Nika for Sophie's death and the impending reprisal attacks against Naji and the civilians on Earth. Nika protested that Norea's terrorist acts would only result in more suffering and make it even harder to improve relations between the Earth and Space. Enraged, Norea began stomping on her and screaming until Sabina pulled her back and said they still needed Nika alive. Norea relented but leaned down to the injured Nika, saying her ego would get many of their comrades killed by the Benerit Group and asked which of them was really causing more suffering.[17]

Sabina Offers Nika WFM 16

Sabina offers Nika the chance to join them

Sabina later treated Nika's injuries, which she thanked her for. Sabina said she had observed Nika at school and offered her the chance to join her and Shaddiq, saying they could transfer her to another school to realize her goals of bridging the Earth and Space. Nika declined, saying she would not remain a victim of others anymore and that she did not want to use unjust means to achieve her goals. Sabina revealed that she was an Earthian as well, and she countered that Nika's ideals were insufficient to change things on their own, so she would remain captive for now.[18]

Nika was moved to a storage room along with Norea, and Elan Ceres joined with them after he fled to Grassley House. Elan was surprised to see Nika there and told her that the Earth House missed her, to which she looked saddened over. After Norea threatened him, Elan brought up that he did not want to get killed with his Gundam, and Nika was surprised to hear that the Gundams harmed their pilots.[19] Nika remained with them over the next few days, and she asked Elan about why he seemed different. He told her about Peil's enhanced person program and the Data Storms that harmed and eventually killed anyone piloting Gundams, which left her distraught. Nika was soon terrified when Norea attempted to stab Elan after he taunted her motives for piloting.[20]

As the three remained captive in the room, Nika grew increasingly discomforted as Norea began sinking into despair and muttering to herself. After Elan looked at her sketchbook, Norea again attempted to stab him, but he restrained her and they both collapsed to the floor as the fought, leaving Nika horrified. Norea began screaming that she did not want to die and was scared of being left alone after Sophie's death, breaking down and sobbing. Bewildered, Nika asked Elan what just happened, and he said it was something she could never understand as he held Norea's hand. The three later witnessed a news report of the battle at Quinharbor.[21]

Asticassia Massacre[]

As Shaddiq confronted Dominicus, he ordered Henao to release the lock on the room the three were trapped in. Nika saw Elan run after Norea but chose to leave on her own. Amidst Norea's attack on the school, Nika called Aliya and rushed to the bunkers, reuniting with the rest of the House. Chuchu was about to confront Nika, but Martin stepped in and ordered Nika to calibrate the Demi Barding to Chuchu's specifications so she could defend them. He said they would talk one more time later, and Nika agreed.

As Nika prepared the suit in the cockpit with Chuchu, she apologized that it was her fault the attack was happening and that Chuchu would have to risk her life fighting. Chuchu asked how she could possibly forgive her, but she then asked Nika to tell her everything she knew after the battle was over so she could at least know what to forgive her for, and Nika promised she would.

In the aftermath of the massacre, Nika rushed to Suletta along with the Earth House. Nika was about to apologize to her, but Suletta interrupted her and asked if she could help her remove the rubble in the area to save the few people who could still be alive. The House agreed to help with the rescue efforts.[22]

As the Earth House prepared to distribute tomatoes to the students in the tent camps, Martin took Nika aside to talk with her. Before he could speak, Nika told him she was going to drop out of school once they finished helping the recovery and turn herself in for her role in Shaddiq's efforts. She tried to assure Martin that she planned on returning to the school later on, but she wanted to atone for what she had done first and said that she still had not given up on wanting to bridge the Earth and Space.

Martin apologized for reporting her and said he had not wanted to punish her, but was left with no other option at the time. Nika responded that she would have given up long ago if she was alone, but that getting to meet the Earth House and Martin had helped her find the resolve to keep trying. Martin told her to let him know as the house leader if she ever needed any help again, and Nika thanked him.

As the Earth House talked with Guston and Belmeria about Quiet Zero, Nika was shocked as Suletta described that she was a repli-child and that Ericht was transplanted into the Aerial. When Belmeria objected but then assented to Guston requesting Suletta to pilot the Calibarn, Nika berated her for sacrificing numerous pilots in her own Gundam experiments under Peil, including an Elan Ceres, and that she was now acquiescing to the same fate for Suletta. Belmeria began grieving and saying she wished she had died in the Vanadis Incident and asked the others to forgive her, but Nika was unmoved and chastised her for being selfish.

Nika told Suletta not to pilot the Calibarn, but Suletta said she wanted to talk to her mother and Ericht one more time. When Chuchu said the Earth House would come along to make sure Suletta was not alone, Nika was surprised when Elan walked in and offered to join them.[23]

Battle Against Quiet Zero[]

Nika Piloting Barding WFM 22

Nika in the back of the Barding

As the House readied to head to the Benerit Group Front, Nika was displeased with Suletta deciding to pilot the Calibarn, but she affirmed to the others that they would not abandon her. She worked with Chuchu and Rouji to configure the Demi Barding with a separate control unit to make the unit Permet-free against the GUND format, although Rouji was nervous when she thanked him for his efforts. Despite her injured arm, Nika took up the flight control unit and readied to pilot the Barding together with Chuchu carrying a passenger pod, hoping to bring them through the Data Storm and into Quiet Zero as it approached.[24]

After evading an attack from Lauda, Nika and Chuchu disabled the Barding's permet links, enabling them to pass through the Data Storm despite difficulties balancing the craft. The Barding was soon surrounded by Gundnode drones, but an unknown intervention temporarily disabled the drones, and they piloted the craft into Quiet Zero. Nika cracked the door locks for the entry group, but they were soon pinned down by the station's Haro drones. The advance group was able to proceed, but she remained taking cover with the others until the drones were disabled.[25]

Nika was captured along with the others by Godoy and the operators of Quiet Zero, but Miorine and Suletta intervened by dissolving the Benerit Group and using the Gundams to disable the League's weapons. Nika helped Chuchu pilot the Barding to carry everyone away as the station broke apart. She was amazed as Suletta reached Permet score eight and dissolved the station and the Gundams, and she piloted the Barding to help Miorine rescue her.[26]

Reunion[]

Nika Prison Exit WFM 24

Nika leaving prison

With Quiet Zero and the Gundams were destroyed, Nika turned herself into prison to amend for her participation in Shaddiq's Faction. After three years, she was released and greeted by her former classmates from the Earth House. She completed a formal mechanics certification test so she could begin a career while still finishing her time at school, and she hoped to meet up with Chuchu. With the rest of the Earth House and the Grassley girls, she called out to Suletta and Miorine as everyone reunited on the Earth.[26]
