Night Caller is the fourth episode of Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance [1].

Synopsis[]

With scrappy Zaku II units, Captain Solari and Lesean mount a strong defense against the Federation mobile suits. Later, an unexpected visitor arrives [1].

Events[]

The RX-78(G)E Gundam EX and a RGM-79 GM have begun to attack the Zeon scrapyard in Romania. Iria Solari and Kneeland LeSean sortie in two Zaku II mobile suits constructed from scrap, with improvised applique armor. To their chagrin, the Gundam is still equipped with its beam rifle, and the GM has a beam pistol in addition to a rocket launcher.

Major Rolph Ronet says that this is what he was trying to avoid, but Alfee reminds him that this attack happened without Zeon's choice.

Haylee draws the GM's focus with PVN.44/1 Weasel and lightly damages it, before she and Ander Heaton make for one of the garages in the base.

The Gundam shoots the shield from LeSean's shoulder, before retreating to avoid Iria's ankle rockets. She leaves LeSean to attack the GM, which is now inside their defensive line. Iria and the Gundam brawl in the scrapyard. The GM prepares to destroy some of the buildings in the scrapyard with a rocket launcher, but is interrupted by fire from a cannon-equipped Zaku II's torso operated by Heaton. Ony Kasuga attempted to control the crane that holds the Zaku torso with difficulty; he is replaced by Major Ronet who knows how to operate the crane. They hold the attention of the GM as LeSean attacks it from behind, and knocks the GM to the ground inside a garage. Ony flees.

In the scrapyard, the Gundam and Iria continue fighting. The GM flees and LeSean chases; the Gundam breaks off from Iria to attack LeSean. Iria orders LeSean to defend the base, but LeSean chases the GM. The Gundam removes Iria's Zaku's right arm for the second time in this show. The Gundam is prevented from killing Iria by another shot from the Zaku torso. The Gundam uses the GM's discarded Rocket launcher to destroy the Zaku torso; Heaton and Ronet survive. The Gundam watches as Ony pulls Heaton from the cockpit, and then prepares to fire on the base, when it is distracted by LeSean attacking the GM, in the woods beyond the scrapyard.

LeSean chases the GM with flares and machine gun fire; he embeds his heat axe in the GM's head. It fires its beam pistol blindly. The Gundam arrives and knocks LeSean's Zaku to the ground. The Gundam prepares to kill LeSean with the RPG launcher, but Iria arrives in her damaged Zaku and destroys the RPG launcher with machinegun fire. She rams the Gundam, and the two Zakus fire on the GM. The Gundam shields the disabled GM from gunfire as the GM pilot bails out. Iria orders LeSean to hold his fire, but he continues to fire until Iria puts her Zaku's hand on his machinegun. The Gundam takes the GM's pilot and retreats.

LeSean objects, saying, "We almost had them."

LeSean wanted to defeat the Gundam, but Iria asks: at what price?

The battlefield isn't the best place to debate mercy, Captain.

Kneeland LeSean, to Iria Solari

LeSean asks whether the Gundam was thinking about mercy when it killed half the Red Wolves.

Our mission was to defend the base, Kneeland. Not to get revenge. There are still people relying on us. That's all that matters.

Iria Solari, to Kneeland LeSean

They return to the scrapyard.

Major Ronet contemplates a glass of liquor as Alfee asks him for orders. Ronet despairs; he thinks that he has only managed to yell at the Gundam. He failed to protect his soldiers and the civilians who worked at the base, which he calls "a garbage dump." Alfee says that Ronet did his best to protect the garbage dump. Ronet laments the death toll, but Alfee says that this was their home. Ronet smashes his undrunk glass upon the ground, saying that they lost, that it will be a miracle if even they make it back to space.

Space is our home. Win or lose, we gotta let the young ones go home. Back to their families and loved ones. That's your job. Rolf.

Alfee Zydos, to Rolph Ronet

Ronet stands and dons his uniform cap, thanking Alfee.

Ony runs across Haylee, who watches the flames of the baser consume a building. He asks if she's okay. She turns on him, asking the medic if he can truly remain neutral when the Feds keep killing Zeon people. She is the last of her unit. "The Feds you save will just come back and kill my people, Doc!"

I'll save anyone on the battlefield. That includes you. And one day, when this is all over, I hope you live to see what the war has taken from us. How much we've all lost. And instead of revenge, I pray that you'll want peace.

Ony Kasuga, to Hayley Arhun

She turns from him, to the flames, and fires a salute from her rifle, saying, "I'll see you back in space one day." Turning back to him, she wishes that he finds the peace he's looking for.

In the cockpit of her damaged Zaku, Iria opens the pocketwatch to show a picture on the inside: Daltun in a suit, Iria in a red dress, and their son holding a violin. She exits the Zaku. Alfee greets her with open arms. Major Ronet says she disobeyed orders and drew the Gundam to his base. He orders Solari and LeSean detained until the base's evacuation is completed and he can press charges. LeSean draws his pistol and threatens Major Ronet, complaining that the Feds could attack at any moment; Iria orders him to stand down. Ronet threatens to have LeSean shot.

"What the hell are we doing here?" asks Major General Yuri Kellerne, stepping out of a PVN.3/2 Sauropelta that he just drove into the scrapyard. Kellerne orders all present to lower their weapons, and thereby defuses the situation. Kellerne praises Major Ronet for assembling Zakus from the junk and defending the base. He also praises the hard work of Solari and LeSean. Kellerne orders the Zakus to be repaired.

In Major Ronet's office. Kellerne speaks with Iria. He knows that Iria was the one who got the Zakus built, saying that the major "lacks the ingenuity to put something like that together." With Major Ronet's liquor, he toasts "to ingenuity and Zeon's triumph." Iria asks about the state of the war. He says it's not going well, and to help turn the tide of the war, Zeon needs to steal one of the mass-produced GMs. He presents her with two command keys for GMs, and plans for stealing at least one GM from a nearby EFF outpost. She is to bring the commandeered GM to Odessa.
