The Neutron Jammer (ニュートロンジャマー Nyūtoronjamā?) (also called N-Jammer) is a technology introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview[]
When this device is activated, it generates a field that inhibits free neutron motion, thereby suppressing nuclear fission. The N-Jammer has a vast effective range, allowing a handful of these devices to cover the entire Earth. As a result, all nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants are rendered useless on the surface. As a side effect, the N-Jammer also disrupts radio waves, so it can be used as a jamming device to neutralize radar, communications, and precision-guided weapons. Under the influence of the N-Jammer, infrared and laser communications are used as alternatives to radio communications, and quantum communications can also be used without interference.
History[]
After the nuclear attack on Junius Seven by the Earth Alliance, PLANT created the N-Jammer to prevent any side from using nuclear weapons again.[1] The project was supervised by Supreme Council member Orson White. On February 22, CE 70, ZAFT used the N-Jammers for the first time during the battle for the space station Yggdrasil. On April 1 of the same year, ZAFT launched Operation Uroboros with the first phase being the scattering of countless N-Jammers across Earth's surface.[2][3] Since Earth relied on nuclear fission as its primary power source, the nations on the planet were plunged into a severe energy crisis called the April Fool's Crisis, causing mass starvation, and economic collapse and even deaths. Some suggested that as much as one billion people were affected in one way or the other.[3][4][2][5]
Since the N-Jammers prevented ZAFT from using nuclear technology as well, they searched for a way to cancel their effect. This resulted in the creation of the Neutron Jammer Canceller, a device which blocked the effects of the N-Jammers in a small area.[6][7] Although ZAFT hoped to gain the upper hand against the Earth Alliance with this technology, it eventually fell into the EA's hand, resulting in the mass-use of nuclear weapons against PLANT.[8][9] Despite both sides using nuclear weapons again, peace was eventually achieved.
After the war's end, the Treaty of Junius was signed between both sides, which, among other things, outlawed the use of N-Jammers in combat, either in a defensive role or as a weapon. Also the long and costly process of digging out all N-Jammers on Earth begun at this time.

Notes & Trivia[]
- Its effects appear to be analogous to the Minovsky Effect in Universal Century.
- When the famous Super Robot Wars series decided to have the Cosmic Era collected into its game, some users pointed out that having N-Jammers will make other nuclear-powered units not able to move. However, since all other Gundam series units uses nuclear fusion as their power source, this is not a problem.
- In Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, which marked the debut of Gundam SEED, the Neutron Jammers were only used by ZAFT to disable nuclear missiles. Operation Uroboros never took place, presumably due to the prevalence of Minovsky fusion reactors rendering it irrelevant.
