The Musai (ムサイ, Musai^?) is a light space cruiser of the Principality of Zeon. Many ships of the same class have been constructed. It is first appeared in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Musai-class cruiser served as the mainline combat cruiser for the Principality of Zeon's space force - designed entirely around fielding mobile suits via a large hangar bay behind the ship. Its armament was limited, armed only with 2-barrel mega particle guns for anti-ship operations. The ship sported two hulls - a primary hull that served as the main bulk of the ship, and the secondary hull that was connected by the raised pylon structure, which served as the mounting points of the 2-barrel mega particle guns. The ship was propelled by a pair of large engine nacelles, which each housed ten powerful thrusters.

The class lacked any form of defensive armament, relying on its onboard mobile suits to deal with enemy threats. The standard Musai-class was armed with three 2-barrel mega particle guns in a superfiring structure, though a limited production variant existed, which only sported two of these mega particle gun batteries, trading off some firepower for lighter mass and additional speed and mobility.

• Twin Mega Particle Gun

The Musai-class is equipped with two to three 2-barrel mega particle guns as its primary weapons, mounted in a superfiring position on the raised structure leading from its main hull to the bridge. Due to their position, these guns are able to aim forward, up and to sides of the ship, though they're unable to fire below or underneath the vessel without maneuvering.

Each Musai-class had a specialized dock that allowed them to carry a single Komusai shuttle that could be used to carry men, mobile suits, and equipment to other stations or ships, and possibly down to Earth.

Variants

• High Speed Musai

A limited number of Musai-class ships had the front 2-barrel mega particle guns removed in favor of additional power draw to the engines, as well as a lighter mass. This increased the top speed and mobility of the ship at the cost of lower offensive capabilities.

History

The Musai-class served as the primary mass production light cruiser of Zeon's space force, forming the backbone of their entire fleet. These ships served throughout the course of the One Year War, defending Zeon territory and deploying mobile suits to the front lines against Federation forces. Char Aznable served aboard a Musai-class known as the Falmer, before switching to the Sodon upon its capture from the Federation in Side 7.

When the Federation attempted to drop Solomon on Granada City, the Sodon would lead an operation to destroy the asteroid fortress before it could crash land, deploying three high speed Musai-class vessels (Camel, Swamel, Tokmel) to escort the Sodon and its mobile suit complement in order to destroy the base. Despite the Kikeroga and the Red Gundam pulling escort duty, Swamel and one other Musai were destroyed.
