Daryl and his comrades assist Professor Karla with her Reuse P. Device research. Meanwhile, Captain Burroughs of the Living Dead Division is ordered to defend the Thunderbolt Sector to the bitter end against the threat of Io's Full Armor Gundam. During a sortie against Io, Daryl loses his left hand and his Zaku I is heavily damaged before escaping death at the hands of the Gundam. Feeling that the Reuse P. Device is their only hope against the Gundam, Professor J.J. Sexton convinces Burroughs to select Daryl as its pilot. Daryl, who has been chosen as the pilot, is forced to undergo the amputation of his remaining arm, as the experiment requires direct connection to the pilot's nerves without any limbs. Karla initially refuses to perform the surgery, but gives in to Sexton's persuasion in order to save her father, who is serving time in prison as a dissident. The division's fate is entrusted to Daryl and the Reuse P. Device-equipped Psycho Zaku.[1]
