Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (機動戦士ガンダムSEED FREEDOM?) is a Japanese animated film released on January 26, 2024.[2] The film is the fourth animated installment of the SEED series, and a sequel to the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Summary[]

A year after the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the terrorist organization Blue Cosmos is still active in Eurasia, and Compass is founded to help end the conflict. Leading Compass are President Lacus Clyne and Commodore Kira Yamato. The recently independent nation, Kingdom of Foundation, wants to help Compass end Blue Cosmos to gain a seat at their council and strengthen the legitimacy of their nation and government. Upon meeting Queen Aura Maha Khyber and their prime minister Orphee Lam Tao in the Foundation capital Ishtaria, Lacus feels an intense connection with Orphee, and Kira notices it too. Compass, Foundation, and Eurasian delegates agree to a joint mission to eliminate Blue Cosmos, who are hiding in an abandoned fortress in Eldore just outside the Eurasian boundary. During the operation, Kira experiences a psychic illusion that convinces him to break into the demarcation line, making him an enemy of Eurasian forces. Foundation's Black Knight Squad is sent to stop Kira. Unknown to everyone, the Black Knights are advanced Coordinators created by Queen Aura, known as the Accords. The Accords manipulate Kira's mind to stage a false flag operation and turn on Compass. Kira and Compass members in Eldore are betrayed, ambushed, and defeated by the Black Knights. The Immortal Justice, Rising Freedom, and the Archangel are all destroyed in the Foundation's trap. The Black Knights take a Eurasian missile launcher and fire nuclear missiles, destroying Blue Cosmos and the Foundation palace. Lacus is taken by Foundation into space, while Kira and surviving comrades are rescued by Athrun and Meyrin in the new Z'Gok and the Cavalier Aifrid. When the nuclear missile detonates, the world presumes Kira and his company died in the blast, but they managed to escape underwater and hide in a secret base in Orb. Foundation later uses the rebuilt Requiem and destroys the Eurasian capital, Moscow, in retaliation for recent events. Orphee publicly blames the Naturals for their losses, reveals the secret of the Accords, including that Lacus is one of them, and encourages Coordinators to join Foundation and enforce Durandal's Destiny Plan. He gives all Earth factions five days to submit to his demands or face Requiem's wrath. Earth Alliance and Orb prepare for war as they dispatch forces into space. PLANT experiences a coup as one of their commanders, Hari Jagannath, sides with Foundation and takes over the government. PLANT chairman Walter de Lament manages to avoid capture and begins planning to retake PLANT. Those who survived the Eldore incident hijack Minerva's successor Millennium and obtain upgraded models of their Gundams: Impulse Spec II, Destiny Spec II, and Strike Freedom Type II. Kira reveals to Foundation that he is still alive and prepares to expose the truth behind Foundation's claims as he makes it to space. Kira rescues Lacus from Foundation captivity, and she declares to the world that she does not support the Foundation. Orphee and the Black Knight Squad sortie to face Kira, Athrun, Shinn, and the rest of the allied Compass forces. Loyal ZAFT soldiers such as Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman to the PLANT chairman help reclaim their government, and the Millennium defeats the Foundation battle fleet. With the intervention of ∞ Justice Type II and Mighty Strike Freedom, the Accords are defeated. Ultimately, Compass defeats Foundation and restores peace.

Plot[]

In Cosmic Era 75, one year after the events of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, conflicts with the radical anti-Coordinator activist group Blue Cosmos still have not ended. Colonel Michael has taken the helm and is committing guerilla/terrorist attacks. The Destiny Plan had failed with the death of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal, creating confusion over PLANT's future. To maintain peace, leaders from PLANT, Orb Union, and the Atlantic Federation formed the global peace monitoring agency: the Compulsory Observational Making Peace Service, or COMPS, better known as Compass. The leaders appointed Lacus Clyne as its inaugural president and Kira Yamato as the supreme commander.

At 1:00 AM in the Kanazi outskirts, Blue Cosmos forces attack Aldrin City in Africa with a group of GAT-04+AQM/E-A4E1 Jet Windams, GAT-01A1 Daggers, and GAT-01A1+AQM/E-A4E1 Jet Daggers, supported by a single GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam. Blue Cosmos aims to restart their war with ZAFT by goading them into a border violation. On board the Super Minerva-class ship orbiting the Earth, the LHM-BB03S Millennium, the Yamato Team is dispatched to Aldrin City. Kira, piloting the STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam, instructs Shinn Asuka, in the STTS-808 Immortal Justice Gundam, to defend the government facilities. He also orders Agnes Giebenrath, in her custom-colored ZGMF-2027/A GYAN Strom, and Lunamaria Hawke, in her custom-colored ZGMF-2025/F GELGOOG Menace, to defend the remaining civilians. Despite Agnes and Shinn’s efforts, Kira insists on taking the frontlines alone. He assigns the Harken Team, led by Hilda Harken, to defend the Millennium.

After descending to Aldrin City, the Compass quartet saves a group of civilians from an advancing Jet Windam that just destroyed a defending ZGMF-1017 GINN. The Destroy Gundam rampages throughout the city, ignoring Kira’s warning. While Shinn and Agnes argue over who should be the support unit, Kira effortlessly disables the Destroy and a number of Blue Cosmos suits. Three hours into the battle, ZAFT garrison forces declare they targeting Colonel Michael and refuse to heed Kira's call to cease fire. ZAFT forces charge into Kanazi City in response to the attack and massacre retreating soldiers. Frustrated by both sides ignoring him, Kira decides to take matters to his own hands, disarming and disabling mobile suits from both sides to stop the battle, demonstrating the capability of the new Freedom. By sunrise, the battle is over and the LCAM-01XA Archangel, now a Compass ship with unit number SCC-101, arrives to provide relief and retrieve Kira's team. After completing rescue efforts and emergency medical triage, the Yamato Team returns to space and back to the Millennium.

Around this time, a private independent nation was founded: Kingdom of Foundation. Though a fledgling nation, the country flourished with its advanced technologies and economy. Under the leadership of Queen Aura Maha Khyber and its incredible growth overseen by Prime Minister Orphee Lam Tao, Foundation began to stir unrest in Eurasia, inspiring other factions to declare independence. This phenomenon, coined the "Foundation Shock," earned the enmity from certain countries. Despite being an independent nation, not every country recognizes them as legitimate. In a strategic move, they approach PLANT and Compass with an offer to help locate Michael in exchange for a position within Compass. They hope this political maneuver will pressure or convince other nations to finally recognize their legitimacy. In a private conversation between Lacus and Orb Union Chief Representative Cagalli Yula Athha, concerns are raised about the political ramifications of allowing Foundation to join them. Lacus expresses a desire for more time to consider their options.

As the Millennium docks at Aprilius' spaceport, Shinn confides in Lunamaria, expressing his concern that Kira does not trust him. He believes Kira has been taking on their enemies alone in every battle. However, Luna suggests that Kira’s actions are meant to minimize casualties. Agnes enters the room and overhears their conversation. She comments that it is not about trust but about ability. Agnes reminds Shinn that he is known as the "Freedom Killer" for a reason and criticizes him for being so easily manipulated by Durandal. She then suggests that she should be the one to pilot the Immortal Justice, claiming she is a far better pilot based on her academy scores. Frustrated, Shinn and Luna are left to reflect on her words. (It is implied that Agnes was a classmate of Shinn, Luna, and the late Rey Za Burrel at the ZAFT academy.)

Kira and Lacus have moved from Orb to Aprilius, where they now own a mansion on the mountainside of the colony. Lacus is preparing dinner when Kira calls to say he will be running late because he is working on refining the incomplete MDE262S Proud Defender support craft aboard the Millennium. While waiting for Kira to arrive, Lacus falls asleep on the couch and dreams of Kira (who was wearing his ZAFT commander uniform instead of his Compass uniform) disappearing, with a blonde man (Orphee) appearing before her. Kira comes home late, gently covers Lacus with a blanket, and then sits at his desk. He reflects on Durandal's profile on his computer and feels uneasy about the Destiny Plan before eventually falling asleep. Lacus wakes up to find Kira asleep in his chair and tenderly covers him with the blanket he had used earlier. She notices Durandal's profile and the Destiny Plan displayed on the computer screen.

The following day, Kira and Lacus ride a motorcycle to a park for a picnic, discussing recent events along the way. As Lacus sets up their bento boxes, she mentions that Michael is hiding in Eldore near the Eurasian border and shares that Queen Aura has personally expressed interest in helping to capture him. Unsure of what to do, Lacus asks for Kira's opinion. Kira feels that if Foundation can help bring an end to everything, there is no reason to object. He reasons that the conflicts have not ended, and someone has to make the effort to bring about peace. Lacus then decides to accept Foundation's offer.

The Millennium departs Aprilius, descends to Earth, and meets with the Archangel as they head to Foundation's capital city, Ishtaria, to discuss an offer with the Foundation royalty. As the ships fly over the city, Archangel captain Murrue Ramius is impressed by how quickly the city has been built. Both ships land at a lake near the royal palace. Upon docking, Lacus is welcomed by Foundation Prime Minister Orphee Lam Tao. When they shake hands, Lacus feels an intense connection—surprise and shock even—with Orphee. He introduces himself to Lacus as her destined partner who will guide the world with her. Caught up in the moment, Kira refocuses Lacus' attention, and their group begins to walk toward the palace. As Kira walks with his entourage, he senses malicious intent from one of the Foundation officers, who seems to want him gone. Meanwhile, unknown to everyone, Athrun Zala has infiltrated Ishtaria and is investigating the seedier areas of Foundation. He witnesses Foundation soldiers killing and arresting civilians but remains hidden to avoid drawing attention.

Inside the Foundation palace, Queen Aura formally introduces herself, Orphee, and her personal security Black Knight Squad to Compass. The introduction is brief as the queen mentions she must attend to national affairs but looks forward to the evening party. In the courtyard, the team encounters the Black Knight Squad practicing sword combat. Shura Serpentine, Foundation's Secretary of Defense and leader of the Black Knight Squad, invites Kira to a duel, but Kira admits that swords are not his specialty. The Black Knights—Griffin Arbalest, Liu Shenqiang, Redelard Tradoll, and Daniel Harper—mock Kira for being a high-ranking officer who does not know how to fight with a sword, but they are scolded by fellow Black Knight Ingrid Tradoll. Annoyed by their disrespect toward his commander, Shinn decides to defend Kira's honor by dueling Shura, but he is quickly defeated. Shura remarks that Athrun is the better duelist. Offended, Shinn wants to respond, but Kira intervenes. Shura draws his sword and comments that the world is governed by those with power, questioning if Kira possesses such power. Kira, however, believes that people do not want a world ruled by power alone. The Black Knights decide to leave, and Agnes chastises Shinn for his incompetence, claiming she should have dueled instead, as she is the better fighter. Shura recognizes Agnes as the "Moonlight Valkyrie" and compliments her, saying her strength makes her beautiful, leaving her swooning.

At the dinner party, Lacus sits with Queen Aura and Orphee for discussions. Orphee decides to take Lacus to the ballroom for a dance. At the buffet table, Mu La Flaga talks with comrades Shinn and Lunamaria about the Black Knights; he believes they are Coordinators, but their behavior does not resemble that of a proper military unit. Meanwhile, Agnes tries to get Kira to dance with her, but he is not interested, reminding her that they are there for formal reasons. Frustrated, Agnes walks away, and Luna suggests that she stop making passes at Kira. Agnes, however, does not believe she is doing anything wrong. Luna questions whether Agnes even loves Kira at all, and Agnes responds that she does not intend to settle for just anyone, taking a jab at Luna's romantic relationship with Shinn.

As Kira takes a breath on the balcony, he spots Orphee leading Lacus to the fountain for a private conversation. Orphee shares his views on why the world remains in conflict and how unfairness perpetuates it. He expresses his desire to create a fair and equal society. Lacus acknowledges that Orphee's ideas are admirable and recognizes the truth in his words. Orphee is pleased by Lacus' approval, as it boosts his confidence. Their interaction causes Lacus to momentarily see Kira in Orphee, and she falls into a mental haze. The prime minister declares his ambition to create a world without poverty or discrimination, believing it to be his purpose. Orphee gently places his hand on Lacus' face, believing she shares the same purpose. Feeling awkward witnessing this moment, Kira quietly walks away. Lacus senses Kira's presence and regains her focus before politely excuses herself to find him.

After the party, Kira is back on board the Millennium with Agnes. Lacus is bringing him a snack when she notices him talking to Agnes and hides just outside the open door. Seeing Agnes fidgety and emotional, Kira asks what is bothering her. Agnes expresses disbelief that Lacus agreed to dance with Orphee while Kira is about to head off to a dangerous battlefield. Kira responds that it is part of Lacus' duties, but Agnes wonders why Kira is not angry with Lacus, accusing her of taking advantage of his kindness. Agnes questions whether Kira wants Lacus to take him for granted. Noticing Lacus' presence, Agnes seizes the opportunity to grab Kira and tries to kiss him, but Kira pushes her away. Confused, Agnes asks what makes Lacus so special, claiming she would never send someone she loves to the battlefield while staying safe herself. Kira believes Agnes does not understand and storms off, only to discover that Lacus left the snack on the food cart outside the door and overheard their conversation, prompting him to go after her.

Along the docks, Orphee greets Kira. Eager to find Lacus, Kira tries to excuse himself, but Orphee bluntly tells him that he is not worthy of pursuing her. Orphee accuses Kira of bringing destruction, hatred, and death wherever he goes and blames him for robbing the world of peace and order by defeating the late Durandal. Orphee questions whether Kira is doing enough to compensate for what the world lost. He believes that with the Destiny Plan presented to the world, there is no going back, and that everyone wants their paths decided for them. Orphee declares that Lacus is the light to guide such a world, and the one standing by her side should be someone like himself. He tells Kira that he cannot achieve peace since all he knows is how to fight, and wonders if Kira has the courage to take Lacus' hand with his bloodstained one once peace is achieved. Orphee then walks away, leaving Kira speechless.

Later that night, inside Foundation's mobile suit hangar, Agnes, still hurt from Kira's earlier rejection, finds comfort in Shura. She holds him and asks if she is not pretty or charming enough. Shura reassures her that she is beautiful, and they embrace. Meanwhile, Shinn, who had the chance to spend the night with Lunamaria, decides instead to spend it outside the ship's hull. Luna remarks that he is an idiot. Orphee finds Lacus sitting at the port pavilion after hearing Agnes' words. The two resume their conversation about the challenges of ending conflict, and Orphee reaches out to hold her hand. Lacus once again feels a strong connection with Orphee and wonders who he really is. Orphee assures her that he is here to make the world better and that he is the only man who can partner with her to bring about world peace. As Orphee speaks, Lacus experiences vivid visions of her mother's past. He tells her that he was given life to fulfill his mission, just as she was. Unbeknownst to them, Kira watches from afar before walking away. Hidden behind the trees near the pavilion, Ingrid watches Orphee trying to sway Lacus, unable to interfere despite secretly being in love with him. In Queen Aura's bedroom, the Black Knights gather around the queen, whom she refers to as her children. Photos in the background reveal that the queen and the knights were once under Durandal's care when they were younger, tying them to Durandal's Destiny Plan.

The following day, during a meeting between Compass and Eurasian Federation officers, they review actionable intel that Michael is occupying the ruins of a fortress in Eldore, a valley located between Foundation and Eurasian territories. Eurasian commanders confirm that they have observed Michael's forces entering and exiting the location through underground tunnels. Murrue remarks that the Foundation army will contain the enemy forces while also aiding civilians. Compass plans to apprehend Michael and call for Blue Cosmos to surrender to minimize casualties, with the Archangel leading the mission. As the Archangel prepares for battle, Eurasian forces make it clear that if Compass or Foundation troops cross the demarcation line, it will be regarded as an invasion, and they will respond accordingly.

Kira, Shinn, and Hilda launch from the Millennium, while the Archangel sorties its STTS/F-400 Murasame Kai team, led by Mu. As the Foundation team carries out humanitarian aid for the locals, a band of suicide bombers causes chaos by detonating themselves, killing several civilians. Meanwhile, Kira and Shinn join forces as the Rising Freedom and Immortal Justice take out a disrepaired Destroy Gundam. With the Eldoran military authorizing rescue operations, the Black Knights are able to enter that region, where they begin operations with their own hidden agenda. The Black Knights, able to communicate telepathically, decide it is time to execute their plans. Black Knight Griffin Arbalest uses his unique ability to manipulate Kira's senses, specifically his vision. Kira, seeing an illusion, believes he spots Michael escaping and gives chase. Convinced he has found the enemy, Kira calls Shinn for backup and speeds toward "Michael." However, the Archangel Corps senses something is off, and Mu tries to warn Kira to return, fearing he will be attacked for crossing the demarcation line. As Kira nears the line, he perceives the people in front of him as Blue Cosmos forces, not Eurasian troops, and attacks them, thinking he has finally caught Michael. At the Foundation CIC, the Eurasian officers demand that Kira stop advancing immediately, warning that his actions could be considered an act of war by Compass. Orphee offers to send his troops to stop Kira to prevent further escalation, and Lacus, fully aware that Kira would not normally act this way, reluctantly agrees.

Just as Lacus agrees to let Foundation stop Kira's further aggression, all major communication channels suffer from jamming. Foundation has secretly activated a Neutron Jammer Dazzler, disrupting signals to freely attack the Rising Freedom without any interference. Kira finally snaps out of the externally induced illusion when he realizes the Black Knights are attacking him. Confused as to why he is under attack, the Knights tell him he has crossed the demarcation line and boldly declare their intent to kill him. As Kira fights for his life against Shura and the Black Knight Squad, Shinn senses that Kira is in trouble and wants to find him. However, Griffin and Redelard Tradoll, piloting their NOG-M4F Rud-roA units "Emerald" and "Garnet", respectively, block his way.

Annoyed by their interference, Shinn fires the Immortal Justice's beam rifle at Griffin and Redelard, but their machines' Femto Technology Armor absorbs the shots. Murrue realizes it is a trap and orders a tactical retreat, still unaware of Foundation's betrayal. Meanwhile, Black Knight Liu Shenqiang seizes control of an Eurasian missile launcher and programs it to fire three nuclear warheads towards the Millennium, the Foundation Royal Palace, and Eldore. The Archangel spots Liu and Daniel Harper's Rud-ro.A units "Spinel" and "Sapphire", respectively, taking off from Eurasian soil and moves to counter the missiles. As the crew attempts to intercept the missiles, both Rud-ro.As "Spinel" and "Sapphire" swiftly destroy the Archangel's "Gottfried" dual high-energy beam cannons. Murrue struggles to fend off the sudden Foundation ambush but cannot inform Lacus of the situation due to the communications being jammed. Amid the chaos, Queen Aura and Orphee strategically board a shuttle for an emergency escape to space, convincing Lacus to join them. Meanwhile, Lunamaria is ordered to sortie in her GELGOOG Menace with the critical task of shooting down the nuclear missile. She successfully destroys one missile but misses the second, which redirects and destroys Ishtaria. The senior members of Foundation and Lacus manage to escape into space, while Luna and the Millennium dive deep enough to avoid the nuclear blast.

The Archangel suffers catastrophic damage from the Black Knight ambush and is forced to eject all its engines. Murrue orders the crew to abandon ship as it crash-lands into a large ditch. Former DOM Trooper pilots Mars Simeon and Herbert Von Reinhard, now piloting their new GELGOOG Menaces, try to stop the Rud-ro.As from causing further damage, but they are deceived by an illusion and are killed by "Spinel" and "Sapphire." The crew quickly evacuates the bridge, leaving Murrue as the last person on board. As she watches her subordinates leave, Daniel's Rud-ro.A "Sapphire" aims its beam rifle at the bridge. Murrue quickly activates the captain seat's new emergency feature, evacuating herself to a lower secure part of the ship just as "Sapphire" pulls the trigger, destroying the bridge. This is followed by a barrage of missiles from Foundation's automated mobile suits, the AMF-101Q/4 DINN-R and ZGMF-1017Q GINN-R, which heavily damage the entire top side of the Archangel. Seeing the wrecked bridge, Mu's Murasame Kai tries to intervene but is damaged by Liu's Rud-ro.A "Spinel" and is seemingly defeated as it falls into the smokes of the burning Archangel. When Shinn realizes the Archangel's destruction, he has no time to process his next move as Griffin in his Rud-ro.A "Emerald" appears, telling Shinn to focus on the battle in front of him. Griffin then swiftly slices the Immortal Justice in half at the torso. With the Immortal Justice down, Shinn abandons his mobile suit and tries to flee. "Emerald" is about to capture or finish off Shinn when Hilda in her damaged GYAN Strom intervenes. She destroys the top half of Immortal Justice with missiles to distract Griffin while pulling Shinn into the GYAN Strom cockpit to flee the area.

The Rising Freedom is the last Compass Gundam standing as Shura presses the offensive. Seeing his mobile suit's energy quickly depleting and having already lost its beam rifle, shield, and right wing segment, Kira is quickly overpowered. Shura's NOG-M1A1 Shi-ve.A destroys the Rising Freedom's weapons one by one. After slicing off the Rising Freedom's right arm, Shura fires Shi-ve.A's barrage of needles, dealing catastrophic damage, overpowering the Gundam's Variable Phase Shift Armor and forcibly deactivating it. Agnes then appears, having changed her loyalties to Shura, and her GYAN Strom slices off the Rising Freedom's remaining arm and legs with its beam axe, leaving the Rising Freedom seemingly helpless as the cockpit hatch blows off. As Kira exits the cockpit, he is shocked by Agnes' betrayal. Just as she moves in for the finishing blow, Athrun intervenes in his ZGMF-MM07 Z'Gok with the Volantes sub-flight lifter. Murrue manages to survive the Rud-ro.A "Sapphire" assault, and so does Mu. Although his Murasame Kai is damaged by the Black Knights, it is still functional enough for its flight mode. Mu finds the smoke-covered Murrue sitting almost helplessly on the back of the ship, takes her inside his mobile suit, and flies away to safety. Athrun engages in a melee mobile suit combat with Shura, holding his own, as Redelard calls for a retreat. Agnes, emotionally conflicted over her actions, hesitates. When Shura asks if she is coming with him, she agrees, and the Shi-ve.A flies off, carrying the damaged GYAN Strom. The final nuke is on course for the Eldoran fortress. Athrun, still in disbelief over Agnes' sudden betrayal, calls for Kira to quickly depart as Meyrin Hawke arrives with the rescued Archangel crew inside the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01. Moments later, the nuclear missile detonates, obliterating Colonel Michael, Blue Cosmos, the fortress, and the remains of the legendary Archangel. The Rising Freedom and the Immortal Justice are presumably lost in the blast as well. The Cavalier Aifrid survives by hiding underwater until it can reach the Compass' secret underwater dock within Akatsuki Island in Orb. On the escape shuttle, Lacus bursts into tears, mourning Kira.

Four days after the battle at Eldore, Kira, Shinn, Mu, and the rest of the Archangel crew are presumed dead. In a virtual meeting between all major powers and Orb, Cagalli reports that the remnants of the Archangel have been found, but the Rising Freedom and the Immortal Justice remain missing. It is presumed that no one survived the nuclear blast. The Millennium confirms that Lacus safely escaped with the Foundation senior members to their satellite base sector. Earth Alliance president Foster blames Kira for the debacle, but Cagalli is not convinced that Kira intentionally crossed the demarcation line to start a war. Even if that were the case, current PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Walter de Lament argues that it does not justify Eurasia launching nuclear missiles at Eldore. Cagalli believes there are too many unanswered questions, and there is not enough information to paint a clear picture of what really happened. Without Michael or Kira to explain the events, the situation seems all too convenient, with no one being held accountable. Eurasia suspects that Kira was involved in a ploy for PLANT to invade, but those accusations are quickly dismissed. Due to the lack of trust between all parties, the meeting ends abruptly.

The Millennium is currently docked at Onogoro Island in the now-called Orb United Emirates. Lunamaria mourns in Shinn's room over his presumed demise. On the command bridge, Captain Alexei Konoe, second-in-command Arthur Trine, CIC officer Abbey Windsor, and technical officer Albert Heinlein discuss recent events. Albert tells the crew he suspects that Foundation is responsible for what happened at Eldore, based on loose evidence. Given the timing of the jamming and the missile attacks, he believes the Black Knights are behind it. Arthur makes the alarming realization that Foundation likely planned the nuclear attacks. However, Captain Konoe admits that while they believe this to be mostly true, they do not have the means to prove it. Albert reflects on their situation: the Millennium has been ordered to return, they have no mobile suits on board, the Archangel is destroyed, and the crew's survival odds are low. Captain Konoe, however, is not entirely convinced that the Archangel team would perish so easily.

Still hiding out at the Akatsuki Island secret underwater dock, the surviving crew of the Archangel learn that Compass has been suspended due to recent events. Shinn is frustrated, but Athrun points out that it is because they have not told their side of the story. When Kira asks about Lacus' status, Athrun informs him that she is at Foundation's satellite base. Kira feels betrayed by Lacus. Athrun then shares his investigation into Foundation with the crew. He begins with Queen Aura, revealing that she worked at Mendel's genetics lab 19 years ago, where she was tasked with creating Coordinators that were superior to the rest, known as the Accords. Based on educated guesses, they deduce that Aura likely orchestrated the events at Eldore as an excuse to attack Eurasia. Around this time, Foundation seizes control of the rebuilt Requiem and uses it to fire upon Eurasia's capital, Moscow, Russia, as "payback" for the nuclear attack on their capital, Ishtaria. Kira initially believes it is a nuclear attack, but Athrun quickly recognizes that the type of attack is characteristic of Requiem.

The world leaders quickly convene and initially assume that the attack was PLANT's doing, but it does not take long for Foundation to take responsibility. In an open channel, Orphee addresses the world, stating that Foundation has been chased off Earth by the hatred of the Naturals. Despite their desire for peace and stability, he claims the Naturals have ruined it. Orphee explains that Foundation adopted Durandal's Destiny Plan as a national policy, creating a fair and equal society based on genetics. However, he blames the Naturals for their unwillingness to change and their tendency to harm each other due to their emotions, deeming them unworthy of Earth. He then turns to the people of PLANT, identifying himself as a Coordinator and declaring that they are the evolutionary future. Orphee reveals that he and the Black Knight Squad are Accords, the true Ultimate Coordinators. He claims they were created to arbitrate for humanity and further reveals that Compass president Lacus is also an Accord, affirming her support for the Foundation and its ideals. In an attempt to unite the Coordinators under his rule, Orphee encourages them to join their cause. He then demands that the people of Earth surrender and implement the Destiny Plan within five days. Orphee warns that anyone who resists will face the wrath of Requiem's cannon. With a gun pointed at both Earth and PLANT, the major powers begin to take action.

In the aftermath of Orphee's speech, Orb sorties the Izumo-class Kusanagi with a full complement of MVF-M11C Murasame units into space. The Earth Alliance prepares to send their ships to the moon. A rogue faction of ZAFT, led by Commander Hari Jagannath, launches a coup d'état to take over the PLANT Supreme Council. PLANT Intelligence Division Deputy Commander Dearka Elsman learns about the coup and warns his comrade Commander Yzak Joule about the situation. Before the coup faction can reach the Chairman, Yzak and Dearka, together with the intelligence officers, manage to help their leader escape capture. They successfully escape by shuttle and quickly board the FFMH-Y101 Eternal. The Clyne Faction anticipates a day like this and secretly hid the Eternal on the dark side of the Aprilius colony and entrusts certain PLANT and ZAFT members with their resources. In reviewing their preparation, Dearka admits they are far from perfect but reveals they have a hidden stash of supplies within the destroyed Boaz asteroid. During the meeting, Yzak's mother, Ezalia Joule, sizes up Shiho Hahnenfuss, much to Shiho’s and Yzak’s consternation.

At the Foundation satellite base, Lacus requests to leave, but Orphee argues she is where she belongs. Queen Aura tells Lacus that this was her mother's wish as well. Confused, Lacus listens as Aura explains that she was created for the people—to be loved by all and to guide them. Aura then reveals that she made Lacus that way; Lacus' genetic sequence and creation were Aura's work. Aura continues, saying that Orphee and Lacus are destined to stand at the top of humanity. Orphee affirms that they will rule the world together. When Orphee holds Lacus' hand again, she feels an intense attraction to him. He tries to kiss Lacus, but Kira mentally calls out to her, and her love for him helps her snap out of the trance. She pushes Orphee away. Orphee reminds Lacus that Kira is dead, and it is because she authorized his neutralization. Lacus falls to her knees, realizing her actions led to Kira's "death." Orphee comments that Kira is not needed in this world, but Lacus takes offense and tells him she did not love Kira because he was needed; he was needed because she loved him, with Ingrid gasping in surprise at Lacus' remark. Orphee, frustrated by Lacus' words, accuses her of thinking like a Natural and decides to leave to cool off.

At Akatsuki Island, Kira is summoned to the meeting room to discuss Foundation and the Accords. Athrun mentions that the two most important members of Foundation's plan are Orphee and Lacus; it is the only reason why Foundation kidnapped Lacus. He also reports that a military coup is happening within PLANT, and they have lost contact with the chairman and the council members. Hilda points out that they have no means to take action since they do not have a ship or mobile suits at their disposal. Murrue believes they are as good as dead at this moment. Athrun speculates that if the Accords can read their minds, they can influence their thoughts, explaining Kira's actions in Eldore, which Shinn realizes as well. To change the situation, Athrun believes they need to retrieve Lacus so her influence can alter the tide of events. However, Kira believes all their efforts will be pointless.

Kira's confidence in himself and Lacus is utterly shaken as he tells the crew that all his efforts have never made a difference. He believes this is why Lacus abandoned him and chose Orphee. Tearfully, Kira thinks his inability to make Lacus happy is the reason she left him. Athrun, fed up with Kira's whining, punches him to the floor. With all this self-pity, Athrun asks if Kira has ever considered her feelings. He tells Kira that if he is tired of fighting, he should stay there to mope and rot. Angered by Athrun's words, Kira retaliates, getting into a fight with him, convinced that Athrun does not understand. Athrun asks if Kira thinks he is the only one fighting. Kira believes it could not be helped because everyone else is too weak. Athrun calls Kira a pathetic hero, accusing him of shouldering too many burdens alone and now intending to give up after failing. Kira denies it and tries to hit back, but Athrun is the superior fighter. Shinn tries to intervene, only to get hit by both of them. Hilda holds Shinn back, believing this can only be resolved between the two best friends.

As Kira struggles to land a punch, he admits to Athrun that he hates doing all of this but feels he is the only one capable. Athrun wonders why Kira never asked for help, knowing it is impossible to shoulder everything alone. Athrun lands an uppercut, knocking Kira to the floor. Tearfully, Kira admits he wants to see Lacus smiling next to him but is unsure what to do next. Athrun responds to Kira's admission by saying that if Lacus cannot be happy unless Kira does something meaningful, then she has likely changed quite a bit since he last saw her. However, Athrun believes that the Lacus he knows would never say such things. Kira thinks about Lacus' desire for peace, but Murrue steps in, reminding him that Lacus never wanted peace served to her on a silver platter. Athrun reminds Kira that Lacus wanted to achieve that peace with a partner, one step at a time. Kira wonders if Lacus truly still feels that way, and Athrun challenges him to go rescue her and ask her himself. Athrun's words manage to galvanize Kira's resolve, and the team now focuses on a plan.

Meyrin uses the Terminal base satellite Factory to track the movement of the Foundation shuttle that left Earth. Combined with Orb's data, they believe Lacus is located at Artemis, the former Earth Alliance fortress with the infamous "Umbrella of Artemis" shield. Kira mentions that if Lacus still has Blue, the blue-colored robotic bird he gave her, similar to Birdy, they have a way to track her location. Shinn wonders what they will do since they do not have a ship or mobile suits in their current state. Murrue believes they can procure a ship, the Millennium, but it will require rough means. Orb Technical Director Erica Simmons then reveals that Cagalli had given her the Impulse and its Silhouette Packs, the Destiny, and the Strike Freedom for mobile suit research and development. She unveils the improved and upgraded ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II, ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II, and ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II. Shinn and Kira are amazed to see their beloved mobile suits again. Erica explains that she used these suits to evaluate the performance of new fusion reactors and equipment. She informs them that while the power systems and armaments are essentially the same, the control systems have been updated to the latest version. Although she admits they might be a little unreliable against the beam-absorbing Black Knight Squad mobile suits, Shinn believes they can win with these machines, especially with the Destiny now at his disposal.

The Archangel team secretly travels to Orb's naval docks via the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01, planning to take the Millennium. They move under cover of night, with the Unit-01 underwater. Wearing stealth swimsuits, the team swims to the Millennium, where Meyrin hacks into its systems and fakes an environmental emergency to convince the crew to abandon ship. As the team reaches the command bridge, completely in stealth, Captain Konoe already knows it is the Archangel team and easily identifies Kira, feeling there is no need for subterfuge. Shinn tries to subdue Lunamaria at gunpoint, but she wrestles him to the ground and takes his weapon. To avoid any accidents, Shinn quickly unmasks and identifies himself. Overjoyed to see him alive, Luna slaps him several times for not telling her about his condition immediately after the Eldore incident, before hugging him tightly, all of this being witnessed by Hilda.

PLANT and the Atlantic Federation receive a notification that the Millennium has been hijacked, but the Black Knights are no fools and notice some movement on the Millennium and Orb secretly working against them. As the combined Archangel and Millennium teams prepare to depart, Kira and Athrun quickly review a battle plan to rescue Lacus. They plan to use the Cavalier Aifrid's Mirage Colloid Stealth System to infiltrate Artemis and evade enemy detection. Captain Alexei explains that the Millennium will break through the main Foundation fleet and head for the moon and Requiem, making themselves the decoy. Albert reviews that Requiem is shielded and indestructible with ordinary firepower, but it relies on beam relay points to direct its firing; the points are cloaked, so they cannot tell where Requiem is aiming until it fires. However, the central relay point is always visible right before the shot is fired; if they take it out, Requiem's firing solutions would be limited.

Captain Alexei decides to have Murrue take command of the Millennium. While she is reluctant, he reminds Murrue that the ship is no longer affiliated with Compass or ZAFT; they are now rebels and can be considered pirates. He believes the person taking command should know how to fight like one, given Murrue's long history with the Archangel. Captain Ramius accepts the position but insists that Alexei be her executive officer. Arthur then questions his own position since he is now no longer the second-in-command.

The Millennium is "escaping" the dock, and Orb's naval ship, the Aegis-class Yoshitsune, gives chase. Although they fire at the Millennium, all shots miss on purpose, with one of Yoshitsune's captains noting that he was taught how to miss like the late Takemikazuchi-class Captain Todaka during the Second Alliance-PLANT War. This allows Orphee to realize the chase is staged. Orphee directly contacts Cagalli, accusing Orb of violating their terms. Cagalli argues that they still have time to respond and that their parliament is still considering Foundation's demands. Orphee tells her he sees through their ruse and declares that they intend to destroy Orb with Requiem. As the Millennium begins to ascend and take off, their sensors detect that Requiem is preparing to fire. Murrue realizes that the Foundation always planned to take out Orb and just needed an excuse. As Orb rushes to complete their emergency evacuation, the neutral nation appears doomed when Kira calls out to Foundation.

Broadcasting through the international rescue channel, Kira reveals to the Foundation that he is alive and on board the Millennium. Kira taunts them, saying it must be a shame that he survived after they sacrificed their subjects to try and kill him. Orphee angrily demands an explanation from Shura; Shura is stunned, believing Kira could not have survived in his condition when he left him. Kira mocks the Black Knights, stating they cannot guide humanity after committing such atrocities. He reminds them that they know the truth and have the evidence to expose their misdeeds. Kira assures them he will destroy the schemes of mass murderers. Queen Aura, enraged by Kira's words, commands Requiem to be redirected to fire on the Millennium. Their goading works, as Requiem adjusts its aim and fires at the Millennium instead of Orb, but a last-second emergency braking order by Murrue saves the ship from destruction, allowing it to completely dodge the blast. While braking, the ship performs a backflip and repositions to fire the four "Tannhäuser" positron blaster cannons into the sky, enabling the Millennium to safely launch into space via positronic interference, similar to how the Archangel launched from Orb into space during the First Alliance-PLANT War. Since Requiem needs to recharge after each shot, the Millennium buys Orb some time.

At Orb, Cagalli, in her repaired MBF-02 Strike Rouge inside the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-02, announces that the nation will implement homeland defense by force while continuing evacuations. At the Boaz asteroid, Yzak and Dearka discover that their old Gundam units, the Duel and the Buster, have been upgraded with nuclear reactors, ZAKU-style cockpits, and brand-new weapons, now bearing ZAFT model numbers ZGMF-1027M Duel Blitz Gundam and ZGMF-103HD Lightning Buster Gundam. They leave the Eternal behind but deploy the legendary METEOR support units, originally intended for use by the Freedom and the Justice. After docking the Duel Blitz and the Lightning Buster with the METEORs 07 and 08, respectively, they jet to the moon to face the rogue ZAFT fleet. On board the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01 with Meyrin and Athrun, Kira tells Shinn that he is in charge of the Millennium. The gesture makes Shinn happy, feeling trusted with an important assignment, much to the amusement of both Hilda and Lunamaria. The Unit-01, carrying the Z'Gok and the Strike Freedom Type II, engages its Mirage Colloid Stealth System and heads to Artemis as the Millennium begins its decoy run.

Within Lacus' quarters in Artemis, Ingrid wonders why Lacus does not accept her fate. She explains that they were given power and came into life with predetermined roles. Ingrid is confused as to why Lacus would deny the impending happiness and living as people need them to be. Lacus believes that all life has the right to choose its own path; it is not the fate she wishes for. Ingrid believes Lacus' denial perpetuates the endless cycle of conflict and does not understand her fortunate position. Ingrid wonders why Lacus would not accept Orphee when she has the chance to rule the entire world. Lacus asks Ingrid if she would be happy with that outcome. The question rattles Ingrid as Orphee enters the room. Ingrid leaves them for privacy.

Orphee wonders why Lacus has not recognized her duty and taken his hand as his partner, but Lacus makes it clear she will never accept him. Angered, Orphee demands to know why she denies him now that Kira is dead, but Lacus declares that Kira is not dead because she believes in him. Even more enraged, Orphee throws Lacus onto the bed and holds her down. He demands to know why Lacus loves someone like Kira, someone who could not successfully become an Accord. Lacus explains that Kira is the one she chooses to love. Orphee questions how Lacus could love someone who could not bring her peace, someone who is not qualified to stand by her side. Lacus explains that love is not about qualifications. Orphee pulls down her dress, almost exposing her chest, but Lacus tells him that if he tries to subjugate people by force, he can never subjugate their hearts. Lacus makes it clear that no matter what Orphee does to her, he cannot erase Kira from her heart. Orphee is confused by her choice, as she was born to rule the world with him, yet she refuses to accept him and his love. Lacus believes that the "Lacus Clyne" he loves is not her. Visibly startled and affected by her words, Orphee angrily leaves the room and tells Ingrid he is heading to the moon, leaving her and Shura to protect Artemis.

Orphee boards Foundation's flagship BCI-183 Gullveig and leads his fleet to engage the Millennium. Captain Ramius prepares for battle as Condition Red is announced, and the command deck lowers itself to an armored part of the bridge, just like its predecessor Minerva did before it. They release some of the missile payload for later use, employing the "Badgiruel Tactic," a strategic attack used by the late Dominion captain Natarle Badgiruel during the First Alliance-PLANT War that specifically put a timer on the missiles as they are released for future activation. The Millennium deploys its crystalline armor, which is theorized to withstand heavy beam fire. As the Foundation battle fleet reaches combat range, Orphee orders his fleet to fire at will, but the Millennium withstands the attack, returns fire, and achieves maximum thruster speed. As Millennium endures the first pass, Murrue orders the sorties of Shinn's Destiny Spec II, Lunamaria's Impulse Spec II, and Hilda in Luna's former GELGOOG Menace into battle, along with the launch of all three Silhouette Packs. Luna equips the Blast Silhouette first, revealing the new colors of the ZGMF-56E2/γ Blast Impulse Gundam Spec II. Murrue elevates the captain's chair and Arnold Neumann's chair to Millennium's 360-degree glass combat bridge for the best visibility. During this time, Orphee feels uneasy not seeing Kira but focuses on the battle, ordering the launch of their mobile suits. Realizing they will face an "old" machine in the Destiny, Black Knight Squad pilots Daniel, Griffin, Liu, and Redelard sortie in their Rud-ro.As, thinking it will be a good opportunity to train their DINN-Rs and GINN-Rs.

At Artemis, the Foundation royalty is notified that the Strike Freedom Type II is headed their way. Queen Aura compares the Freedom's approach to someone rescuing a princess, prompting Shura to deal with it himself and finally finish off Kira. Kira briefly telepathically connects with Lacus, causing both Orphee and Shura to feel uneasy. As a part of the Umbrella of Artemis shield was lifted for Shura's Shi-ve.A to safely launch and engage the Strike Freedom Type II, Meyrin sneaks the Mirage Colloid-cloaked Z'Gok/Cavalier Aifrid in before the shield restores. The Z'Gok/Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01 then attacks the ships docked at the hangar bay to distract the Foundation forces. Meyrin hacks into their communication systems and gates to prevent anyone from escaping or calling for help. Taking advantage of the confusion, Kira joins Captain Ledonir Kisaka and his extraction team to rescue Lacus. A bunch of Haros are released into ventilation shafts to disperse sleeping gas. The entire fortress is knocked out cold, except for Ingrid, who manages to close her pilot suit visor just in time. Ingrid telepathically warns Shura that the base has been infiltrated, but he is busy fighting the Strike Freedom Type II and finally realizes that he is not fighting Kira but Athrun. Ingrid locks herself in with Lacus to stall the invading forces and prepares to kill Lacus. She believes soldiers are risking their lives to retrieve Lacus because of her ability to influence people and change the tide of the war; Lacus wonders if that is all there is to it. Ingrid explains that Orphee's motivations are the same, that he loves Lacus because she is superior. Expressing desperation, Ingrid tells Lacus that because she has value, Lacus needs them and loves them. However, Lacus questions whether it really is love.

Using Blue as a homing beacon, Kira and his team find the room where Ingrid is holding Lacus hostage. Ingrid challenges Kira's love for Lacus, asking if his feelings would remain if she lost her voice or eyes. Kira assures Ingrid that he would still love Lacus regardless because he loves everything about her. Lacus makes a risky move by intentionally falling to the ground, but Kira manages to catch her. Ingrid tries to use her gun, but Kisaka fires his weapon, disarming her. She then attempts to use her knife but only manages to cut some of Lacus' hair as Kira pulls her away. Kisaka knocks Ingrid to the ground, where she sees Lacus declare her love for Kira as they embrace. Feeling defeated and broken, Ingrid tells them to leave after Lacus apologizes to her, then breaks down in tears. After rescuing Lacus, Kira and the infiltration team escape the fortress in the Z'Gok/Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01, with Athrun following in the Strike Freedom Type II. Shura cannot give chase as explosions rock Artemis, forcing him to help his mother, who is knocked out cold. In a safe area in space, Kira returns to the Strike Freedom Type II, and Athrun to the Z'Gok. Kira then undocks from the Z'Gok to head toward Requiem and instructs Athrun to transport Lacus back to the Millennium.

At the Gullveig flagship, Orphee prepares to fire Requiem upon Orb again. However, a cloaked mobile suit container suddenly arrives just in front of Requiem's mouth and the primary relay ring. Upon disengaging the container's cloak, Mu La Flaga appears in the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam equipped with the A-GXQ754/V2 Zeus Silhouette, a support mobile armor initially intended for Destiny's use. Mu positions the Akatsuki between Requiem's barrel and the primary relay ring as it is seconds away from firing. He uses the Zeus Silhouette's linear cannon to destroy the relay ring and positions the "Yata-no-Kagami"-coated shield to reflect Requiem's beam. While deflecting the beam, the reflected attack destroys several enemy ships and damages Requiem's exterior, heavily delaying its next firing sequence. Mu quickly disengages the Zeus Silhouette from the damaged Akatsuki, allowing it to reassemble in flight form. He claims to a worried Murrue that it is tough to make the impossible possible. Mu then flies toward Shinn to deliver the Zeus Silhouette for the Destiny Spec II. During this time, the Kusanagi and other Orb forces has been cloaked and managed to travel close to the Moon before revealing itself to launch a surprise attack against the rogue ZAFT forces.

On Millennium's side, Black Knights Daniel, Griffin, Liu, and Redelard engage Shinn while Hilda and Lunamaria defend their ship. Hilda notices the arrival of the enemies, and knowing the unique feature of their machines, Shinn switches to the "Arondight" beam sword and tells Luna to switch to the Sword Silhouette, unveiling the updated coloration of the ZGMF-56E2/β Sword Impulse Gundam Spec II. While heading to engage the Black Knights, Luna notices a familiar model suit number on her cockpit display and realizes it is Agnes and the GYAN Strom. Initially glad to see Agnes to have survived the Eldore incident, Luna is shocked when Agnes quickly tells her that only Shura appreciated her and then fires at the Sword Impulse Spec II. Luna quickly shields herself and engages Agnes in melee combat. Luna tells Agnes that she is being used, but Agnes questions why Luna is not siding with them, as she is also a Coordinator. Agnes suspects Luna lost her senses due to Shinn, but Luna insists that Shinn has nothing to do with it. Luna questions Agnes, wondering if she switched sides simply because Kira ignored her. Angered by Luna's words, Agnes fights back aggressively, destroying Sword Impulse's "Excalibur" anti-ship swords, but loses the GYAN Strom's beam axe and right heat rod to the Impulse's beam boomerangs.

On Shinn's side, the Black Knight pilots struggle to counter the Destiny Spec II. Shinn makes it clear that he only lost during the Eldore incident because he was using the Justice and not the Destiny. He then activates his SEED mode. Shinn hyper-vectors through the fight, causing substantial damage to the Rud-ro.As despite being outnumbered four to one. The Black Knights attempt to read Shinn's mind but realize he is not thinking at all, relying solely on his combat instincts.

The Kusanagi has now teamed up with allied Earth Alliance forces to take down the rogue ZAFT fleet. The tide of the battle turns against rogue ZAFT commander Jagannath when Chairman de Lament makes an emergency broadcast, calling all ZAFT forces to stand down and suppress the coup. Commander Andrew Waltfeld assists in taking down the coup forces in Aprilius and helps restore power to the PLANT Supreme Council. Despite losing control of the political body and the situation at PLANT's homeland, Jagannath commands his fleet to continue the attack. He believes that if Requiem fires at Orb, the tide of the war will turn in their favor. As Jagannath's Nazca-class ship Burckhardt launches a volley of missiles toward the Kusanagi, Yzak and Dearka arrive in the Duel Blitz and Lightning Buster equipped with the METEORs to intercept them. They identify themselves to the rogue ZAFT forces and command all ZAFT troops serving under Jagannath to cease hostilities. However, the battle continues. Yzak warns Jagannath that his actions are treasonous, but Jagannath argues that they are the ones who will define the future of PLANT. It is then that Lacus makes an announcement.

Athrun, Meyrin, and Lacus arrive at the Millennium and quickly initiate a public broadcast. Lacus tells everyone that she escaped captivity from the Foundation to speak to them. She makes it clear that she does not agree with all the views that Foundation holds. She remarks that the fair and equal society they propose is governance under the Destiny Plan. Lacus reaffirms her stance that she will never accept such a thing; a world without failures, changes, and dreams, where society's value is decided by genetics, is something she will never entrust her worth to someone else. She also believes that forcing this system through violence and terror is something that should not be allowed. Lacus tells everyone that all lives have the freedom to choose their own destinies, a cause she will fight for. She warns that people who do not love them should not be allowed to determine their worth.

Queen Aura and Orphee are angered that Ingrid let Lacus go freely, and Orphee slaps her for it. Orphee believes that if they do not fulfill their duties, there is no meaning to their lives. He leaves Aura to command the fleet as he prepares to sortie with Ingrid for battle. At the Millennium, Captain Ramius prepares to charge through Foundation's defense line and ram the Gullveig with their ship. Lacus suddenly appears on screen, wearing a custom-made pink and white pilot suit, and requests permission to launch as she manually pilots the now-finished Proud Defender to deliver it to Kira. Murrue is concerned about letting Lacus sortie since she is not a trained fighter pilot, but Albert believes he can safely guide Lacus to Kira and assist her with the Proud Defender. With Albert's confidence, Murrue permits the sortie. Athrun thinks Lacus' action is too much, but Meyrin believes it is okay, as it can be more stressful to watch from the sidelines. The two then sortie together, with Meyrin in the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01 carrying Athrun and the Z'Gok. Lacus and the Proud Defender launch right after. It is around this time that Orphee and Ingrid leave the Gullveig, revealing the top-of-the-line Foundation mobile suit, the NOG-M2D1/E Cal-re.A, along with three of its AMO-01 Ziggurat support units. They, too, launch toward the Moon.

Yzak and Dearka continue to defend the Kusanagi. Yzak tells Jagannath to surrender, as the coup back at PLANT has failed and further losses in troops would be meaningless. Jagannath angrily asks why they would side with the humanity of the old world, believing that maintaining the status quo will change nothing. He believes only the elite will continue to benefit, perpetuating injustice and cruelty. Dearka believes there is no point in changing the rogue commander's mind, as he is already determined to see things through. Frustrated, Yzak undocks the Duel Blitz from METEOR 07, with Dearka following suit in the Lightning Buster from METEOR 08.

As Kira intercepts enemy forces with the Strike Freedom Type II near the remains of ZAFT space fortress Messiah, he is engaged by Shura in the Shi-ve.A. Soon after, Orphee and Ingrid appear in the Cal-re.A, a mobile suit built using the Strike Freedom's technology and Kira's fighting data. Even though Kira activates his SEED Mode, he struggles to fend off both high-end Black Knight suits while also dealing with attacks from the Cal-re.A's three Ziggurats, positioned and hidden behind Messiah. During the battle, Orphee mocks Kira, telling him he is challenging him with an old mobile suit. Kira argues that the mobile suit's performance does not determine their strength. Orphee agrees, believing this is why Kira will always be inferior to them. The Cal-re.A manages to slice off one of the Strike Freedom Type II's wings and destroy three Super DRAGOON pods with its own "Sahasrabhuja" remote weapon pods. With Ingrid remotely controlling the Ziggurats, she attempts to overwhelm Kira with a missile barrage and beam shots. However, Kira tells Orphee that he has his own weapon: Lacus' love, and fires off the Strike Freedom Type II's Full Burst Mode. Kira manages to shoot down many missiles but still has to make a tactical retreat as the barrage is too much. Angered by Kira's words, Orphee charges at him, expressing his frustration at hearing Kira speak Lacus' name, something Orphee could never forgive, even if he killed him a million times. Kira continues to fend off the Cal-re.A and the Shi-ve.A as the battle rages on.

During her fight against Agnes, Lunamaria notices that the Impulse Spec II has drained its energy reserves by the deactivation of the Variable Phase Shift Armor and calls out to Shinn as she detaches the Sword Silhouette to dock with the Force Silhouette. Shinn immediately heads to Luna's location and resupplies the Force Impulse Spec II's battery with Destiny Spec II's built-in Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System. The top-up finishes within seconds, enabling the Impulse to activate its VPS Armor, revealing the deeper colors of the ZGMF-56E2/α Force Impulse Gundam Spec II. Both Shinn and Lunamaria resume their respective fights against the Rud-ro.As and the GYAN Strom. The four Black Knights then intend to gang up on Shinn in a coordinated melee attack, dubbed the Synchro-Attack, attempting to use their hyper-vectoring to overwhelm the Destiny Spec II. As Luna crosses blades with Agnes this time with the Force Impulse Spec II, she accuses Agnes of always going after other people's boyfriends. Agnes admits it, not thinking it is a problem, and declares that any man would obviously love her; she tells Luna not to be jealous.

The Strike Freedom Type II struggles against the combined assault of the Cal-re.A and the Shi-ve.A, losing its right railgun, sustaining damage to the "Tvashtr" hyper impulse gun in its torso, and pushing its cooling systems to the limit. Orphee questions why Kira continues to oppose him, labeling Kira as a failure who never should have existed. He tells Kira that he does not deserve his comfortable life or the love he receives, insisting that Kira is unqualified for any of it. Kira responds that love is not something one needs to be qualified for, but Orphee, enraged, demands that Kira give it all to him, arguing that Lacus should have been his if not for Kira. Orphee intensifies his attack, overwhelming Kira with the Ziggurats' arsenal, heavily damaging the Super DRAGOON wings and causing the Strike Freedom Type II to overheat, forcing its VPS Armor to deactivate, as it crashes into Messiah's wreckage. Seizing the moment, Shura aims to finish Kira off by firing Shi-ve.A's close-in needles, just as it had done to the Rising Freedom back at Eldore just a few days before. However, Athrun intervenes, charging in with his Z'Gok to shield the vulnerable Kira and the Strike Freedom Type II. The Z'Gok takes the brunt of the needle attack and appears doomed until, in a dramatic turn, the Z'Gok's armor purges itself, creating the illusion of an explosion, and revealing the ZGMF-X191M2 ∞ Justice Gundam Type II beneath. Meyrin then launches the Volantes sub-flight lifter from the Cavalier Aifrid Unit-02 to complete the Justice's weaponry, and Athrun swiftly engages Shura.

While Orphee, Ingrid, and Shura are distracted by the surprise reveal of the ∞ Justice Type II, Lacus arrives with the Proud Defender, and Kira hastily launches the Strike Freedom Type II from the Moon's surface, jettisoning the severely damaged Super DRAGOON wing backpack to dock with the white support craft. Orphee then orders Ingrid to focus all their firepower, from the Cal-re.A's to the Ziggurats', on the docking Freedom to ensure its destruction. Meanwhile, aboard the Millennium, Albert manually fine-tunes the docking sequence between the Proud Defender and the Strike Freedom Type II. Upon docking, the Proud Defender immediately connects its cooling system with the Strike Freedom Type II, reactivates its VPS Armor, and deploys nanoparticles from the support craft's wings to shield the Gundam from incoming attacks.

Initially oblivious to the docking sequence, Orphee smirks, believing that Kira Yamato and the Strike Freedom Type II, their major obstacle all this time, have finally been destroyed. However, he is stunned when Lacus appears in front of the newly transformed ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam. This unexpected turn of events also intrigues Shura, who is currently dueling Athrun.

Safe within the spherical nanoparticle shield, Lacus enters the Mighty Strike Freedom's cockpit to join Kira. When Kira asks why she is there, Lacus replies that her will is always with him and that she looks forward to being with him forever. Kira happily accepts her words as she takes her place by his side, and they prepare for battle. Feeling thoroughly rejected, Orphee unleashes a full barrage of beam attacks from his Cal-re.A's Sahasrabhujas and Ziggurats, angrily exclaiming that both Kira and Lacus should have perished with their foolish love. Lacus activates her SEED Mode and uses Mighty Strike Freedom's Multi Lock-On System to focus to all of the Ziggurats' missiles and the Cal-re.A's Sahasrabhuja units and neutralize all of them with a large-scale electric attack from the new Freedom wings, much to Orphee's shock and disbelief. With Lacus' authorization, Kira activates the Disruptor weapon on the Freedom's head crest. Lacus warns Kira that the targets are behind Messiah and links her mind with his to show him the exact location of the Ziggurats. The Mighty Strike Freedom then fires a powerful, invisible fine beam that cuts through the remains of Messiah and destroys all three Ziggurats.

Requiem is back online and Queen Aura plans to fire it on Orb once again. Daniel, Griffin, Liu, and Redelard prepare to launch their Synchro-Attack, with Griffin attempting to send Shinn's mind into darkness. Unbeknownst to them, Shinn's late lover Stella Loussier's spirit is determined to protect him and rebounds their attack with her own more terrifying one, scaring the four Black Knight pilots as they claim that Shinn/Stella's darkness is too deep. Shinn then launches a high-speed illusionary attack by creating many Mirage Colloid afterimages of Destiny Spec II and charges in with all of the afterimages to attack all the Black Knights. Hilda in Luna's GELGOOG Menace, hidden within one of the images, suddenly appears in front of Redelard Tradoll's Rud-ro.A "Garnet" and destroys it with the beam halberd, avenging the deaths of her brothers Mars and Herbert back at Eldore. Redelard's death shocks and terrifies the three remaining pilots as Shinn charges in to attack them. Shinn then activates all of Destiny Spec II's weapons, pushing the Gundam's full potential to the limit, causing the inner frame to glow red from the resulting heat. He first destroys Liu Shenqiang's Rud-ro.A "Spinel" first with a direct "Arondight" beam sword thrust into the cockpit. Shinn then uses the "Flash-Edge 2" beam boomerangs to distract Griffin Arbalest's Rud-ro.A "Emerald" and damages its cockpit, before blasting it with the high-energy long-range beam cannon at close range. Finally, Shinn finishes off Daniel Harper's Rud-ro.A "Sapphire" with the "Palma Fiocina" palm beam cannon strike, blowing out the cockpit and avenging his previous defeat against the Black Knight Squad. Queen Aura witnesses the deaths of her children and, in frustration, vows to burn away both Orb and PLANT.

The battle between Lunamaria and Agnes continues. Frustrated, Agnes wonders why things always go wrong for her, while Luna questions whether Agnes is seriously voicing these concerns in the middle of a fight. Agnes then reveals that she is dating Shinn but does not even love him, assuming Luna has placed herself in a better situation. Luna finds Agnes' words strange, as she genuinely loves Shinn. Shocked, Agnes cannot believe that Luna would love someone as dim as Shinn. Angered, Luna tells Agnes it is none of her business; she would not stay with Shinn if she did not love him. Agnes, enraged, charges at Luna, declaring that she deserves to be loved too. Luna sees no point in arguing further and skillfully severs GYAN Strom's right arm with the Force Impulse Spec II's beam saber and subsequently destroying its thruster engines with the Impulse's chest CIWS guns. As Agnes' GYAN Strom plummets toward the Moon, she admits that she loved Shinn too. Lunamaria then apologizes to Agnes for her actions before heading toward Requiem to support Shinn.

The Millennium destroys most of the Foundation fleet and prepares to advance when the Burckhardt suddenly appears from behind. Ship captain Jagannath vows that the blood and grudges of the fallen will not be forgotten. He then plans a suicide run to take down the Millennium, but Dearka intervenes, using Lightning Buster's beam cannons to destroy the Burckhardt's engines. Yzak then launches Duel Blitz's lancer darts toward the bridge, killing Jagannath and everyone aboard, destroying the ship. Reflecting on the death and destruction they have caused and endured, both Dearka and Yzak resolve to break free from the cycle of hatred, ultimately bringing the coup to an end.

Athrun continues to battle Shura in a fierce melee mobile suit combat, with both fighters reaching a standstill. Shura compliments Athrun's combat skills but insists that Athrun is no match for him. Shura explains that winning is his duty and the reason for his existence. When Athrun closes his eyes, Shura assumes he is trying to block his mind from him, but Shura warns that it is useless to hide his thoughts. To Shura's shock and disgust, Athrun was projecting lewd thoughts of Cagalli. Outraged, Shura curses Athrun for defiling the sacred battlefield with indecent fantasies. Shura charges at Athrun, confident that he can predict Athrun's next move. However, at the last second, the ∞ Justice Type II makes a sudden shift, catching the Shi-ve.A off guard, and uses the Type 35 Prototype Advanced Railgun, which Erica Simmons had loaded several onto the Millennium for the mobile suits' use before they went into space, to destroy the Shi-ve.A's right arm, sending the mobile suit crashing to the lunar surface.

Shura is baffled, as his abilities should allow him to anticipate Athrun's next moves, but he realizes Athrun has allowed Cagalli to remotely control the Justice, leading Athrun to mockingly call Shura useless. Elsewhere, Cagalli blushes in displeasure when she realizes that Athrun's improper thoughts were likely of a sexual nature involving her. As Shura resumes their fight, he manages to sever the Justice's right arm, giving him the impression that the advantage is his. Athrun then tells Shura that strength is not just power—it is also the will to live. Activating his SEED Mode, Athrun deploys the ∞ Justice Type II's "Spitze Schwert" beam horn and uses it to cut through the Shi-ve.A's cockpit from the top. In disbelief, Shura struggles to accept his defeat as the beam cuts through him. The Shi-ve.A explodes not long after, killing Shura.

As Orphee and Ingrid continue battling the energized Freedom, they sense the loss of Shura and the rest of the Black Knight pilots, fueling Orphee's rage. Lacus urges them to stop, but Orphee retorts that Lacus chose Kira because he is inferior to her. He questions whether it is comforting for her to be surrounded and worshipped by those she deems beneath her, accusing Lacus of being an egocentric, cold-hearted woman. He claims she does not care if these so-called inferiors fight themselves to extinction in her name. Orphee charges at Kira with his Cal-re.A. Kira meets the attack head-on, wielding an "Acuta Lacerta" beam saber in Mighty Strike Freedom's left hand and the "Futsunomitama" physical katana in its right. The Cal-re.A then fires its "Adro Onzi" hyper impulse gun at the Mighty Strike Freedom, but it is blocked by its nanoparticle shield. In response, Kira has the Mighty Strike Freedom fire another close-range Disruptor shot, obliterating the Cal-re.A's left arm and left wing completely.

Lacus tells Orphee that there is no superior or inferior when it comes to lives, emphasizing that everyone is precious to someone. Orphee, seemingly hurt, questions why he is not loved. Lacus assures him that he will find love, if not now, then in the future. She believes that someone close to him, someone he has not yet noticed, could love him, a revelation that surprises Ingrid. Orphee exclaims that the future does not matter to him—he wants to be loved right now. He argues that they were born out of the foolishness of humans, who speak of peace and equality yet expect others to change for them. Kira does not believe this is true, but Orphee questions why conflict never disappears, regardless of the time or age.

Orphee laments that humanity, even on the brink of extinction, remains consumed by immediate self-interests and prejudices, dragging each other down in a cycle of hatred. He believes they are foolish and desperately need guidance to end the division and bloodshed. Disturbed by his words, Ingrid leaves her cockpit and rushes to Orphee, trying to stop him from further action. However, Lacus counters Orphee's bleak view, stating that humans are born not out of need but from love. As Kira closes in for the final strike, he declares that he will choose his own future. Kira delivers a decisive blow during the battle, driving the "Futsunomitama" katana into Cal-re.A's torso. Wounded, bloody, and with his visor shattered, Orphee struggles to accept defeat, as he feels he has a duty to fulfill. As the cockpit begins to show signs of impending explosion, Ingrid comforts Orphee in their final moments, telling him that she understands his feelings before the Cal-re.A explodes, killing them both.

Shinn and Luna, held up by battle, now rush towards Requiem. Mu finally arrives to deliver the Zeus Silhouette, which combines with the Destiny Spec II. Dearka instructs Luna to dock with METEOR 08 to aid in destroying the superweapon. The Millennium activates its "Goten" heat ram and drives itself straight into the left side of the Gullveig, critically injuring Aura. In her final moments, Queen Aura smiles, believing she will at least manage to destroy Orb with one last shot from Requiem. However, Shinn, with the Zeus Silhouette-equipped Destiny Spec II, appears in front of the cannon's mouth and destroys it for good with a powerful, singular shot from the Zeus Silhouette's linear beam cannon. While the Millennium remains firmly lodged in the Gullveig's hull, Murrue orders the firing of all of the Millennium's weaponry, ultimately destroying the Foundation flagship and killing Queen Aura, thus bringing the Foundation Conflict to an end.

With Foundation forces finally vanquished, the surviving ships fire retreat signals. As Lacus reflects on her feelings about love and hate with Kira while inside the triumphant Mighty Strike Freedom, the Millennium crew rejoices in their victorious journey. Mu enters the ship's bridge, and Murrue hurries to him, embraces him, and they exchange a passionate kiss. A crying Agnes survives the GYAN Strom crash-landing on the Moon's surface as Lunamaria, in the Force Impulse Spec II, arrives and lowers her Gundam's hand toward her to pick her up, mimicking what Athrun did to both Shinn and Luna during the aftermath of the Battle of Messiah. Shinn, in the Destiny Spec II, just looks at the two women interact. The two Cavalier Aifrid units unite on Earth as Unit-01, carrying Athrun in the ∞ Justice Type II, rendezvous midflight with Unit-02, carrying Cagalli in the Strike Rouge. Athrun then shows her the Haumea stone she gave him, and Cagalli shows him the promise ring he gave her. Both carry their treasured items as necklaces to remind them of their love for each other. After the final battle and the defeat of Foundation, Kira and Lacus descend to Earth in the Mighty Strike Freedom just as Lacus' cast ring floats away into space in honor of Ingrid and Orphee.

In the epilogue, Kira and Lacus retreat to a secluded beach on Akatsuki Island. They power down the Gundam, then proceed to take off their pilot suits. The couple walk down the beach, holding hands, before kissing each other in the warm glow of the sunset.

Production[]

In 2006, Sunrise had announced the tentatively titled Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Movie (劇場版・機動戦士ガンダムSEED?) at Sony Music Anime Fes' 06, part of the Xplosion Gundam SEED.[3][4]

Two years later, in an interview published in the April 2008 issue of Animage, screen-writer Chiaki Morosawa said the plot had been done for some time now but that following the end of SEED Destiny, she fell ill, underwent examinations, and went to the hospital for treatment. Apologizing more than once, she stated the delay was simply due to that and though there wasn't a plan in place, she had no lack of energy, so she asked fans to please wait a little longer.

In 2016, Chiaki Morosawa passed away due to aortic dissection; after her death, production of the movie began.

In 2021, the movie was transferred to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED PROJECT ignited.

The movie, now entitled Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, was first unveiled on July 2, 2023, with the reveal of the first animated PV, as well as the opening of the official website, and was announced to be premiering on January 26, 2024. A second animated PV with new scenes and voice acting was released on August 8, 2023. A third PV revealing new mobile suits was released on October 4, 2023. A fourth PV featuring Takanori Nishikawa's song FREEDOM was released on November 20, 2023. A fifth PV was released on December 27, 2023. On December 21, Nami Tamaki's song Reborn was released as the film's official supporter song.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is the fifth theatrical release in the Gundam franchise that is not a compilation of an existing series following Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, Mobile Suit Gundam F91, G-Saviour, and Mobile Suit Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer.
  • When the first poster and trailer for the movie was revealed, a lot of mockery was done towards returning and new female characters' lips. This was because of the strange, fuller, lipstick-clad lips that were vastly different from characters like Murrue Ramius', especially coming from characters like Lacus Clyne and Cagalli Yula Athha. While the movie itself would retain the design, many later promotional works would heavily tone down the design.
  • As with the beginning of the special edition movies, the Haro in the Sunrise ident is Lacus's Mr. Pink.
  • Cagalli was the only one bearing the SEED Mode to have not activated it in the film.
  • On a tweet by director Mitsuo Fukuda, he revealed that Cagalli was using the weapons on the Cavalier Aifrid via remote control during the ambush on Artemis' harbor. It makes sense as Meyrin is busy hacking into Artemis' systems, Kira is with Captain Kisaka and the rescue team, and Athrun is piloting the Strike Freedom Type II.
  • On another tweet by director Mitsuo Fukuda, he revealed that since the Rud-ro.As are featured with the beam-absorbing Femto Technology Armor, Shinn attacked Rud-ro.A "Emerald" with the "Flash-Edge 2" beam boomerangs to damage the cockpit enough for the high-energy long-range beam cannon shot to penetrate the armor and the cockpit. Also, he revealed that the Destiny Spec II sacrificed its right hand palm when striking Rud-ro.A "Sapphire" in its cockpit with the "Palma Fiocina" palm beam cannon since it was also covered in Femto-Tech,[1] however, the movie contradicts this, as the Destiny's right hand is shown to be intact after the attack (if Fukuda's statements were true, then it shouldn't be possible for the Destiny Spec II to use the Zeus Silhouette to destroy the Requiem).
  • In the original Japanese dub, Cagalli's original VA Naomi Shindō is replaced by Nanako Mori.
  • In the English dub:
    • Kieran Regan replaced Aaron Phillips as Shinn Asuka.
    • Trevor Devall reprised his role as Mu La Flaga, replacing the HD Remaster voice actor Tom Wayland.
  • On December 21st 2023, the official gundam channel and Nami Tamaki uploaded her official support song for Gundam SEED Freedom 'Reborn'
  • Gundam SEED Freedom also marks Shigemi Ikeda's final contribution as the film's art director before his passing on October 13, 2024.

Continuity Notes[]

Errors & Goofs[]

Note: Strikethrough lines are amended errors featured in the Blu-Ray/Special Edited release, Underlined lines are errors that are exclusive to Blu-ray/Special Edited release.

  • At 00:42:28: Lunamaria's GELGOOG Menace appeared on the Immortal Justice's panoramic cockpit despite not being sortied at the time.
  • At 00:43:05: Redelard's Rud-ro.A "Garnet," which is orange, is shown to be blue with an orange shield.
  • At 00:56:48: The ∞ Justice Type II's foot, which seems to be in its Variable Phase Shift Armor-activated state (even though it was not activated until its reveal), is shown to be in the same color as the Z'Gok's dark red. In the Blu-ray version however, the color of the of the Variable Phase Shift Armor is in justice's red.
  • At 01:23:58: When the Strike Rouge activates its Phase Shift Armor, its shield and the beam rifle turn along with it.
  • At 01:43:43 When the Strike Freedom Type II blocks Shi-ve.A, the entire forearm is moved rather than rotating the arm guard.
  • At 01:47:13: As the Strike Freedom Type II performs the Full Burst Mode, the "Volans Hasta" railgun's firing effect briefly turns green in two frames.
  • At 01:50:44: As the Mighty Strike Freedom emits its nanoparticles, the head and arms appear larger and out of proportion with the rest of its body.
  • At 01:53:33: When firing the long-range high-energy beam cannon at point-blank range, the Destiny Spec II is shown to have both "Flash-Edge 2" beam boomerangs on its shoulders, even though one of them is still circling back to the MS.
  • At 01:53:43: As the three Rud-ro.A explosions are shown on the ship's screen, the Destiny Spec II is not seen.
  • At 01:55:10: As the Duel Blitz is about to fire its lancer darts, the arm moves in a way that shouldn't be possible without moving the shoulder armor, and the right arm is shown to be clipping through the armor.
  • At 01:55:23: When dueling with ∞ Justice Type II, Shi-ve.A's shield kept appearing and disappearing in different shots.
  • At 01:56:04: The ∞ Justice Type II's shield suddenly disappears when grabbing the beam saber and Shi-ve.A's right arm suddenly disappears after changing angle.
  • At 01:56:36: The ∞ Justice Type II's severed right forearm is depicted as a whole arm.
  • At 01:59:29: When the Strike Freedom stabbed Cal-re.A, it is shown to be stabbed on the right side of the chest near the cockpit, but the next shot suddenly shows the "Futsunomitama" katana exit to be lower near the abdomen.
