Synopsis[]
The tragic story of Char Aznable, the ace pilot known as the Red Comet, and his sister Sayla Mass unfolds against the backdrop of the events leading to the One Year War. The Zabi family's rise to power, the birth of the Principality of Zeon, the early days of famous aces such as Ramba Ral and the Black Tri-Stars, the development of the revolutionary new weapon known as the mobile suit, and the road to war against the Earth Federation are all depicted onscreen for the first time [1].

The openings were done by Japanese rock band LUNA SEA, considered one of the most successful and influential bands in the visual kei movement. For the endings, the band's guitarist/violinist SUGIZO collaborated with various artists; the band GLIM_SPANKY, KOM_I from Wednesday Campanella, and miwa. Three of the songs are covers of those used in previous Gundam anime; Meguriai from Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space, Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Beyond the Time from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.

Episodes began airing in the Monday 00:35 to 01:00 timeslot on NHK General TV on April 29th, 2019 JST. There is a break in the original run after episode 10 with episode 11 airing on Monday July 28th [2].
Crunchyroll simulcast the series with English subtitles [1] .The English dub is simulcast by Funimation, and also began airing at 3am on Saturdays (effectively Sunday morning) on Adult Swim's Toonami block starting on Saturday July 6th, 2019 [3]. Episodes were also available at the Gundam Channel on YouTube every Friday at 21:00 JST from May 15th, 2020 [4].
