Mirage Colloid Stealth System is a stealth technology introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Technical Information[]
The system utilized a powerful magnetic field to hold in place Mirage Colloid particles, microscopic prisms capable of blocking infrared emission as well as bending visible light and radio waves around an object, making it invisible to both electronic sensors and the naked eye. The system's operational time is dependent on its power source. For example, the Blitz Gundam, powered by a battery, was capable of continuously maintaining its stealth system for 80 minutes.[1] If powered by a nuclear fission reactor, the stealth system could, for all practical purposes, be maintained indefinitely. Additionally, the stealth system could not be used simultaneously with the Phase Shift armor,[2] but the reason for this is unknown.
Countermeasures[]
To counter the Mirage Colloid Stealth System, Mirage Colloid detector was developed and installed on almost every MS and spaceship.[3][4] However, this detector could not find the exact location of the MS using Mirage Colloid. Interestingly, if a unit were to scatter Mirage Colloid particles around it, it can disrupt the Mirage Colloid stealth system of another unit within a certain radius, revealing it.
History[]
The Mirage Colloid Stealth System was developed by the Earth Alliance as part of their G Project and was first equipped on the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam. Unfortunately, ZAFT raided the Heliopolis colony and stole the Blitz Gundam, acquiring the stealth technology. The stealth system's effectiveness was displayed when the Blitz Gundam utilized the system to bypass the sensors of the asteroid fortress Artemis and destroyed its Lightwave Barrier emitters.[1] At the climax of the First Alliance-PLANT War, ZAFT used the stealth system in the construction of the superweapon, GENESIS, to keep it hidden before its reveal at the Second Battle of Jachin Due.[5]
While the Junius Treaty signed at the end of the war banned all use of the Mirage Colloid Stealth System, organizations continued to employ it despite the restrictions. Most notably, during the interim of the first and Second Alliance-PLANT Wars, the Earth Alliance secretly incorporated the technology into the limited production GAT-SO2R N Dagger N[6][3] and the Girty Lue-class space battleship.[7] The Orb Union also secretly developed the MVF-X08 Eclipse Gundam with the stealth system installed for use in covert operations.
After the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the peacekeeping organization Compass also employed the Mirage Colloid Stealth Systems on various vehicles for use in dire emergencies, including the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid. During the Foundation Conflict in C.E. 75, the Cavalier Aifrid effectively used the stealth system to infiltrate Artemis and rescue Lacus Clyne from the Kingdom of Foundation.[8]

Notes & Trivia[]
- The system is featured in the Gundam Vs. series as a power-up mode for the Blitz which cuts all enemy tracking, but is stopped when taking damage or attacking, while the Astray Gold Frame Amatsu and Astray Gold Frame Amatsu Mina can only use it in short bursts to dash towards an enemy target.
