Martin Upmont (マルタン・アップモント Marutan Appumonto?) is a character in Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury. He is a third-year student in the management strategy department at Asticassia School of Technology, who belongs to Earth House.

Personality & Character[]

Martin is the leader of the Earth House, but he is often indecisive and nervous when handling difficult situations. When dealing with stress, he tends to lose focus on his work and is prone to oversights and mistakes. He finds it difficult to mediate arguments or strong personalities between the members of the House and often defers to Nika to help him.

Martin is also very wary of the reputation of the Gundams and Witches, especially their rumors of stealing the lives of their pilots, and is very reluctant to get involved with using them. Despite having limited piloting skills, he does not enjoy the mobile suit dueling and is nervous when doing so.

Despite his uncertainties, Martin still shows concern for the wellbeing and safety of the students of his House and is willing to assert himself as leader when needed. He is not afraid to try talking to some members individually if he thinks they are hiding things that could harm the rest of the House.

History[]

A.S. 122[]

Suletta's Arrival[]

Martin watched the opening match between Miorine and Guel with the rest of the Earth House.[3] After Suletta Mercury was arrested for using a Gundam, he talked with Nika and Chuchu at lunch and was surprised by how Suletta even got in to school given Shin Sei's low ranking within the Benerit Group. After Chuchu sarcastically commented that the students are only as good as the prestige of their sponsor companies, he lamented having almost nothing to his name as an Earthian. When two Earthian girls demanded that the group move from their table, Nika offered for all of them to move, and he belatedly followed her behind.[4]

He later watched Suletta's rematch against Guel with the rest of the Earth House. When Chuchu cheered for Suletta to crush the Spacian, Martin reminded her that she was not from Earth either.[5] He and the rest of the Earth House were later introduced to Suletta by Nika when trying to help her find a partner for the spotting exam. He was mortified upon seeing Chuchu's vicious outburst against Suletta for being a Spacian.[6]

The Earth House and GUND-ARM, Inc.[]

Martin Nervous about Peil WFM 06

Martin freaks out over Peil's mobile suits

Martin watched the duel between Guel and Elan with the rest of the Earth House and noticed Guel was fighting too aggressively.[7] When Suletta said she did not have a thruster unit to fight Elan in the front space for an upcoming duel, Martin freaked out at how much more mobile Peil's machines were. When the house attempted to build a thruster unit from scraps, Martin lamented that it would leave them with a huge financial deficit and wondered how they would eat next month, only for Lilique and Aliya to get annoyed and gently try to stop his groaning. He helped the rest of the House prepare Suletta for the duel.[8]

Miroine invited Martin and Nika to attend the Incubation party as Suletta's guests. He and Nika were awestruck by the luxury and the amount of mobile suits displayed, and he almost wondered if they should even be in a place this fancy. As he ate a meal, Martin spotted Shaddiq talking close to Nika and was unsure what to make of it.[9]

After the Incubation Party, Martin told Chuchu and Nika about his shock at how quickly Miorine was able to form a buisness pitch and buy out Peil and Shin Sei, saying he nearly fainted watching it unfold. Miorine then walked in and ordered to everyone that the company would be set up at the Earth House, much to Martin's surprise.

Martin Ojelo Talk WFM 08

Martin tells Ojelo he doesn't want to get involved with the Gundams

When talking about her proposition with Ojelo in a class, Martin nervously stammered they shouldn't get involved with Gundams or Witches at all, calling them cursed. Ojelo said it would be good opportunity to learn about business, but Martin yelled out that it would be a disaster, causing him to get scolded by the teacher for being too loud during the lecture. He whispered to Ojelo that he still doesn't want to get involved.

At a formal pitch meeting with the whole Earth House, Martin lamented that Lilique instantly helped Miorine prepare the company pitch so quickly. As the House debated whether to use the company to sell weapons, Martin said Chuchu's suggestion to sell them only to Earthians was unrealistic for them as a member of the Benerit Group, and Chuchu accused him of siding with the Spacians, which he denied. Miorine delegated writing up the registration papers to Martin and for Lilique to help him with any other financial details, which he accepted. As the House was stressed during the set-up process, Lilique corrected Martin for making hasty mistakes in the documents. After they finish, Martin was exhausted but glad that they were going to run a medical company using GUND technology.[10]

After Shaddiq changed school rules to shut GUND-ARM, Inc. down, Martin and Lilique attended the Dueling Committee with Miorine where she swore a duel to get the rules reverted, and he was confused about why Renee acted like she knew Lilique. When the Earth House discussed how to get more pilots for the team battle, Ojelo suggested Martin for one as the house leader. Martin strongly objected and said the Gundams kill their pilots, which Suletta pushed back against. After Lilique happily volunteered due to Renee's challenge, Martin bemoaned her enthusiasm for leaping into things.

Martin Piloting WFM 09

Martin groans about having to pilot in the team duel

Martin ended up piloting a Zowort in the team duel against Grassley, much to his dismay in the release preparations. As the duel began, Martin panicked as three of the Grassley pilots began advancing towards him and the other Earth novice pilots, and Maisie taunted him and twisted his Zowort's head off with a single kick. However, as the Grassley pilots ditched the defeated Earth pilots to focus on Suletta, Martin and the rest of the House used the remaining power in their Zoworts to position Chuchu's Demi Trainer to snipe the head of Shaddiq's Michaelis, winning the duel for the Earth House. At the victory party, Martin remarked how the duel was gaining their promo video thousands of new views.[11]

Martin continued helping GUND-ARM, Inc. over the next two weeks, although Aliya had to correct him when he accidentally wrote down the incorrect budget numbers.[12] He accompanied the rest of the Earth House when they traveled to Plant Quetta to pick up the Aerial, although he was very nervous at the logistics of flying a spacecraft for the first time.[13] When the Dawn of Fold blew up several ships and a mobile suit near their hangar, he initially tried to flee their ship with the rest of the House, but he stopped upon witnessing Nika flashing a signal to an attacking Gundam. After the Gundam flies off, he surprised Nika and asked her what she just did.[14]

Post-Quetta and the Rumble Ring[]

After Quetta, Martin continued to help Suletta with her make-up duels, but he was frightened at the brutality of some of her techniques in the fights. Everyone in the Earth House was shaken after the Quetta Attack, but the school administration forced them to not discuss it under threat of expulsion.

Chuchu grumbled at how all the other students look happy setting up for the Open Campus event, ignorant of what happened at the Plant, but Martin reminded her that it was not their fault that they did not know about it. He noticed Nika looking depressed when Chuchu bemoaned the attack as an act of terrorism.

When Nika once again left the group on her own, Martin followed and confronted her about what she did at Quetta, saying he was responsible for everyone's safety as the leader of the House. He begged her to tell him what she was hiding from them, but Nika again brushed him off and said she only sent a general SOS, refusing to listen to Martin's protestations. [15]

The next day, as the Earth House crew reflected at the fair about helping Nika with her injuries from the night before, Martin vented his frustrations that Nika always hid secrets from them and had not told them anything about herself.

Martin Calls WFM 14

Martin reluctantly contacts the Front Police about Nika being a terrorist

When Sophie and Norea began their attack during the Rumble Ring, Martin recognized the suits from the Quetta Attack and realized Nika was connected with them. Reluctantly, he contacted the Front Management Company and told them that Nika was a terrorist, resulting in the House getting apprehended after the battle as they showed up to arrest her.[16]

Ongoing Guilt[]

The Earth House was cleared of suspicions but remained on a temporary academic suspension. When a group of students spray-painted the house dorm and lashed out at them as Earthians, Martin took the lead and ordered them to stop harassing their House, saying they had no idea about Sophie and Norea. When one of the students attempted to throw a paint can at Suletta out of anger, Martin moved in front to block it, injuring his head. Lilique treated his injury, and he greeted Miorine with the rest of the House.[17]

Martin helped the House provide logistical support for Suletta in her third duel against Guel. Chuchu bemoaned Nika's absence, and he looked discomforted thinking about it. At the end of the match, he was shocked that Suletta had lost for the first time.[18]

Martin at Counselling WFM 18

Martin talking to Asticassia's counselling about his guilt

Chuchu ordered Martin to stay and guard the House while the rest of them went with Suletta to confront Miorine over her betrayal, to which he agreed. However, he was still wracked with guilt over reporting Nika to the Front Management Company and sought Asticassia's counselling services. He confessed to a Haro that he turned Nika in because he wanted to protect the House as she was committing crimes, but he asked if he had done the right thing. Secilia revealed herself behind the display and startled him, and she teased him about betraying his friend.[19]

Secilia blackmailed Martin into giving her a manicure in the dueling committee lounge. She continued belittling him for betraying Nika as a friend and for the "underdogs" of the house turning on each other, but Martin yelled back at her for not understanding their situation. Martin again tried to justify his actions, saying that he stopped trying to understand Nika and was forced into a hard choice in order to help his friends, but Secelia told him to be honest with himself and just say that to the Earth House, and he broke down crying.

Martin returned the next morning and told the group that he had reported Nika. Chuchu lashed out at him, but she relented once he confirmed he had heard Nika cooperating with a terrorist group. Till approached Martin and apologized himself for not noticing his struggles earlier but still told him the stables needed cleaning, and Martin thanked him. The others discussed the incident, and Lilique said it was the only thing Martin could have done in the situation even if it was an imperfect solution. [20]

Asticassia Massacre[]

Martin reported back to Secilia and Rouji that he had taken her advice and talked to the Earth House. The two confronted him over the Aerial's attack in Quinnharbor and asked how the Aerial was using the GUND-Bits in the video, but Martin said he had no idea either. He fretted as Rouji continued to interrogate him with his Haro with its glowing eyes.

Martin Orders Nika WFM 20

Martin asking Nika to help them

However, they were interrupted as Norea began obliterating the school with her Gundam and the Gundvolvas. Martin rushed with Secilia and Rouji to the bunkers and met up with the rest of the Earth House. When Nika returned to the bunker, Chuchu was about to confront her, but Martin stepped in and ordered Nika to calibrate the Demi Barding that Secelia had loaned them so that Chuchu could defend them. He asked Nika for another chance at dialogue if they all survived, to which she agreed.

After the massacre, Martin and the rest of the Earth House surveyed the destruction on campus. The House rushed to meet up with Suletta, and she asked everyone to help her remove the rubble in the area to save those who were buried, yet might still be alive. Martin took charge and began coordinating his house to help with the rescue efforts.[21]

Martin Talks with Nika WFM 21

Martin talks with Nika

As the Earth House helped with the recovery efforts at the school, Martin took Nika aside to talk with her. Before he could speak, Nika told him she was going to drop out of school once they finished helping the recovery and turn herself in for her role in Shaddiq's efforts. She tried to assure Martin that she planned on returning to the school later on, but she wanted to atone for what she had done first and said that she had still not given up on wanting to bridge the Earth and Space.

Martin apologized for reporting her and said he had not wanted to punish her, but was left with no other option at the time. Nika responded that she would have given up long ago if she was alone, but that getting to meet the Earth House and Martin had helped her find the resolve to keep trying. Martin told her to let him know as the house leader if she ever needed any help again, and Nika thanked him.

When Suletta resolved to pilot the Calibarn to talk with Eri and Prospera, Chuchu ordered Guston to take the Earth House along so they could make sure Suletta was not alone, and Martin said he would come as well and that he would never abandon anyone from the house ever again.[22]

Battle Against Quiet Zero[]

Martin was with Chuchu when she begged Secelia to loan them the Demi Barding again. When Secelia agreed but said the Earth House would have to cover any damage and repair costs Martin was worried about the price, but Chuchu reproached him and said it was bearable if it meant helping Suletta. As a part of the plan to stop Quiet Zero, Martin agreed to join the passenger pod that the Barding would carry through the Data Storm to the structure, although he needed Lilique to give him an extra set of motion sickness pills as he grew queasy. [23]

When the Barding launched with the pod and disabled its permet links, Martin cried in terror as the ship rocked around, but it adjusted soon after. Once the group broke through and landed on the station, he held Chuchu back from rushing in too quickly, and they were soon pinned down by the station's armed Haro drones. While part of the group was able to head forward, he stayed behind with the rest as they took cover.[24] Martin was captured along with the others by Godoy and the operators of Quiet Zero, but Miorine and Suletta intervened by dissolving the Benerit Group and using the Gundams to disable the League's weapons, and he rode in the Barding as it escaped the disintegrating station.[25]
