The Magellan-class was a Earth Federation Forces' space battleship introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Magellan-class was a line of space battleships used by the Earth Federation Forces' fleets in space. Designed purely around the concept of heavy firepower and durability, it was the largest class of naval ship used by the EFSF. Its main armament was centered around mega particle weaponry, with supplementary missile launchers and a large number of twin machine guns for defensive purposes. It was commanded by a three-tier bridge tower, with most of its defenses centered around midship to protect the bridge. To propel the ship, it was equipped with four large clustered engine blocks, each with four thrusters - granting it impressive speed despite its size and mass. Despite these advantages, the Magellan-class fared poorly against more nimble mobile suits in combat. These battleships typically sported a naval blue color scheme, though some ships - such as Wakkein's vessel had a darker teal color.

Initially, the Magellan-class wasn't designed to carry mobile suits, but in later productions, they were modified to suit such a role as part of the Vinson Project.

After the war, some are repurposed for "civilian use", and was adopted by various independent groups and colonies for self-defense.

Armaments

• Twin Mega Particle Gun

The Magellan-class mounts four twin barreled mega particle guns on its hull as its primary armament, with one in front of the raised superstructure of the bridge, one on each side of the ship, and one on the ventral hull.

• Mega Particle Gun

The Magellan-class mounts four mega particle guns on its hull in single turret mounts as its secondary armament, with one fore and one aft of the bridge, as well as one on each side behind the side mounted twin mega particle guns.

• Missile Launchers

The Magellan-class sports a set of four large missile launchers, with a pair of these launchers mounted on a raised position between the twin mega particle cannons and the single mega particle cannons on each of the ship's port and starboard sides.

• Twin Machine Gun

The Magellan-class is armed with a total of twenty five twin machine gun turrets for close ranged defense. Eight placed are on each side of the ship surrounding the sub-bridges, three are on each side of the bridge tower, and one on each side of the ship's rear dorsal hull near the engine array. The last twin machine gun turret is mounted on the ship's ventral hull.

Special Equipment and Features

• Re-entry Shuttle

The Magellan-class is equipped with a small shuttle on the underside of the ship's hull - near the engine block. It is used for the transfer of personnel and supplies between ships or stations, and is capable of traveling through the Earth's atmosphere.

History

One Year War

The Magellan-class served as the Earth Federation's main battleship for their Space Force, serving as their command ships, as well as their main source of firepower in fleetwide actions. At the time, these ships were considered the most powerful spaceworthy presence in the Earth Sphere, only for their weaknesses to be made apparent by the new mobile suits fielded by Zeon during the length of the One Year War. Many Magellan-class vessels would be lost to a wide variety of battles throughout the course of the war, even as the Earth Federation started to field their own mobile suits. A number of Magellan-class warships would participate in the last large scale conflict of the One Year War, in an attempt to drop Solomon onto Granada. The commander of this operation, Wakkein, commanded the Renown, a Magellan-class battleship with a unique green color scheme. The Renown and a handful of other vessels would ultimately survive the failed operation, retreating and signaling the end of the One Year War after an odd phenomenon prevented Solomon's fall.

Due to the defeat of the Federation to the Principality of Zeon, the Federation would concede control of the colonies to Zeon, removing its space presence entirely. It is unknown if the Federation fleet was decommissioned, or if they were limited to the Earth and her surrounding space.

At the Yomagn'tho opening ceremony, the Side 6 Military Police had Salamis and Magellan vessels in service.

• Magellan-class seems to be based on World War II-era battleships, which were expected to be the decisive factors in naval battles before the war but ultimately lost against carrier-launched aircraft.
  • Similarly, the Magellan-class was expected to be the decisive factor in space battles but lost out against the mobile suit.
• The name Magellan could possibly based on Ferdinand Magellan, a Portugese explorer from 16th century.
