The MSA-120 Draig (also known as MSA-0120) was an Anaheim Electronics prototype mobile suit designed for the Earth Federation Forces. It first appeared in Cyber Comix No.024. It later made a brief appearance in the Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula manga.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Based on the RGM-109 Heavygun,[1] the MSA-120 Draig was a prototype mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics to compete with SNRI's Formula Series as part of the ATMS (Advanced Tactical Mobile Suit) competition. Its most notable features were the "Mega Boost" - which grants a temporary increase in mobility; and "Vaporizing Applique Armor", which protects it from beam weapons.[2]

Armaments[]

  • High-Impact Gun
A weapon that used artificial gravity generated via Minovsky Craft technology.[2] In Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula, it is set up as a pseudo-gravity railgun that accelerates a projectile by the repulsive force of the Minovsky repulsor field, and boasts the power to smash a rock mass larger than an MS with a single blow.
  • Hyper Mega Launcher
  • Beam Saber

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Mega Boost
A new technology that temporarily increases the unit's output through the use of Energy CAP, greatly increasing its mobility.[2]
  • Vaporizing Applique Armor
Similar to anti-beam coating, this type of ablative armor vaporizes when hit by beam weapons, protecting the mobile suit itself from harm.

History[]

The development of the MSA-120 Draig was done by Anaheim Electronics' Zeonic division in Granada, which was previously responsible for most of Anaheim's main force mobile suit development, such as the RGM series.[3]

In October, U.C. 0111,[4] the MSA-120 Draig competed with SNRI's F90 Gundam F90 to become the Earth Federation Forces' next main mobile suit. Through computer simulation, the two were compared in four categories based on their design data: maximum output, durability, cost of use, and mobile combat ability. The result was a draw: the MSA-120 won in the first two categories and the F90 won in the latter two. As such, a second test was conducted in the form of simulated combat.[3]

Though the two were expected to be evenly matched in combat, the MSA-120 Draig was soundly defeated by the F90[3] due to the latter's superior mobility,[1] causing the F90 to be officially adopted as the main mobile suit of the EFF.[3] Anaheim exerted considerable political pressure on the military, but was unable to reverse this decision, with the only compromise being that they would have the right to manufacture the mobile suits that SNRI developed.[5]

Despite the MSA-120 Draig's defeat, the EFF was still impressed by its instantaneous power and durability, and requested SNRI to incorporate these features into their next mobile suit, leading to the development of the F91 Gundam F91.[3]

In U.C. 115, an MSA-120 Draig appeared in the middle of combat between EFSF Fastest Formula Corps and the pirates. It quickly destroyed the pirates and managed to disable the F70 Cannon Gundam. After a heated battle between the FF Corps it was withdrawn from the battlefield picked up by an allied modified AMA-01X Jamru Fin.

Variants[]

  • MSA-120 Draig (Unit 1)
Appearing in the Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula manga, this variant of the MSA-120 had a more distinct look, particularly the twin antenna similiar to the RX-105 Ξ Gundam. Unit 1 sported a blockier look and is painted in silver-ish white color, and is equipped with a prototype version of Beam Smart Gun and Beam Trident which would later be used by LM312V04+SD-VB03A V-Dash Gundam.[6]Little is known about this variant of the Draig, but the rumour says that Unit 1 was developed as smaller version of the RX-104FF Penelope and the Xi Gundam in mind proven by the overall appearance of this unit.[7]
