The MS-09 Dom (aka MS-09B Dom) is a mass-production ground combat mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam. Its most well known pilots are the Black Tri-Stars.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

A heavy mobile suit developed by Zimmad, the MS-09 Dom was a ground combat machine equipped with hovercraft technology. It was fitted with thermonuclear jets and rockets under its feet, allowing it to quickly move across the ground, greatly improving its mobility compared to previous ground-use mobile suits. Thanks to sensors located in front of its feet, it was able to traverse uneven terrain. While in cruising mode, it could hover across the ground using only its thermonuclear jets.[1] The Dom can hover at a maximum speed of 381 km/hr for up to 5 hours.[2]

Its primary thrusters adopted the Saturn Engine, a type of thermonuclear engine that used heavy elements such as zinc and lead as propellant, granting it higher thrust than thermonuclear engines that used lighter elements as propellant.[2][3] The mobile suit's design was largely unchanged from the YMS-09 Prototype Dom aside from its appearance.[4] It inherited the same cross-shaped monoeye rail from the MS-07C-5 Gouf Test Prototype, granting it an improved view of aerial targets.[1][5] Lateral field of view was obtained by auxiliary sensors.[2]

For defense, the Dom was heavily protected, adopting a unique "skirt armor" design to protect weak points in the back, such as thrusters. Its cockpit hatch armor, which was its greatest weakness in the front, was also greatly enhanced. However, since the cockpit was entered directly from the front of the Dom, pilots in desert and wetland areas complained that the console panel would become dirty from entering and exiting.[1][4] Meanwhile, the Dom's head was merged into its chest, a design intended to deflect and ricochet enemy projectiles, as well as lowering the possibility of being hit.[1][2]

The Dom's primary weapon, the 360mm Giant Bazooka, was developed in parallel with the mobile suit. It was capable of sinking a space cruiser with a single shot.[4] It was also armed with a heat saber for close combat, as well as a scattering beam cannon in its chest, which was capable of blinding the enemy.[1][2] It was said that the beam cannon was originally intended to be an energy port for beam weapons, but was repurposed after the development of beam weapons was delayed.[1]

Armaments[]

  • Scattering Beam Cannon
A beam weapon mounted on the left side of the Dom's chest, the scattering beam cannon was only powerful enough to produce an intense, bright flash that could momentarily blind human eyes and visual sensors. At close range, the beam was also capable of dissipating I-fields, rendering weapons that depended on I-fields to focus and shape a cohesive blade of energy, such as the Beam Saber, inert for short periods.[2][6]
  • Heat Saber
The Dom's main close combat weapon, it uses thermal energy to heat its blade to high temperature to melt through the armor of an enemy machine. It has an electrical discharge function and can store high charges via the application of Minovsky particle physics. As the heat saber degrades during use, it is discarded after usage. Mounted on the back when not in use.
  • H&L-GB03K/360mm Giant Bazooka
A mobile suit-use bazooka that fires rocket-propelled 360mm physical rounds. Liquid fuel supplied through a pipe from the Dom's hand is injected as a primary propellant, and then the projectile's speed is increased by rocket motor ignition. It is fed by a 10-rounds magazine, and a single round can cause severe damage to most mobile suit.
  • 880mmRB-T27 Raketen Bazooka
A new heavy bazooka which features powerful rocket-propelled rounds, and improved targeting sensor with protective cover for aiming. The bazooka is fed by a 5-rounds clip and spare clips can be carried.
  • MMP-80 90mm Machine Gun
A small caliber machine gun for mobile suits developed under the United Maintenance Plan. The overall shape and mechanism of the Zaku Machine Gun, which was previously deployed, has been changed. The magazine has been changed from a drum magazine to a box magazine, and a 197mm grenade launcher is available as an option. The caliber has been reduced to 90mm, but as a result, the hit rate has improved, and the 90mm shell used is also excellent in initial velocity and anti-MS firepower. The number of bullets loaded is 32 in the standard single magazine and 100 in the triple magazine. The late production model features a different barrel and hand guard, resulting in a more compact shape.
  • ZMP-50D 120mm Machine Gun
A standard firearm for Zaku type MS. It is a shell firing gun that does not require energy to be used; however, its effectiveness against heavy armor is very limited. The ZMP-50D used a 100-round drum magazine, which is offset to the right.
  • M-120A1 120mm Machine Gun
The same portable firearm used by the Zaku II. It can switch between semi-automatic and automatic fire. Although useless against Luna Titanium Alloy, it can still destroy weaker armor material with multiple shots. It fires 120mm caliber rounds that are stored in a 100-rounds drum magazine.
  • H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka
A portable, physical projectile-type firearm. It is primarily for anti-ship combat and displays its power in hit and run attacks. It can also be used against enemy mobile suits, but it is harder to hit a constantly moving target.
  • Heat Hawk
An axe-like melee weapon, whose name is short for "tomahawk". Thermal energy is used to heat the heat hawk's blade, allowing it to slice through the armor of enemy warships or mobile suits.
A simplified, disposable rocket launcher. As the warhead is not equipped with a guidance device, it is extremely hard to use the Sturm Faust to hit a moving target accurately. However, it is still a highly destructive portable weapon.
  • Knuckle Shield
The knuckle shield is a modified Zaku II shoulder shield carried on the arm, with the curve of the armor fitting over the mobile suit's hand. One of the modifications is the additions of three spikes placed on the plate that rests in front of the hand. These spikes make the knuckle shield an effective bashing weapon.
  • Gun Turret
An autonomous sentry turret that can be placed on the ground and is able to discern between friend and foe. Three gun turrets can be stored on a rack on the Dom's back when not in use.
  • Beam Sniper Rifle
The main armament of the MS-05L Zaku I Sniper Type. It is capable of long-range precision firing. To facilitate the use of this weapon, it is connected via wire to a portable auxiliary generator.

History[]

During the One Year War, the Principality of Zeon's ground-based mobile suits, including the MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type and the MS-07B Gouf, all suffered the problem of low deployment speed.[7] It was determined that the maximum walking speed of a mobile suit could not exceed 200 km per hour.[8] After several failed attempts to solve the problem, Zeon introduced the Dodai YS as a stopgap measure. Meanwhile, the development of a new mobile suit - the YMS-09 - was ordered to find a permanent solution.[9]

Around six months after the start of the war, Zimmad technicians completed the basic design of the YMS-09.[1] Two prototype units were produced in the Zeon homeland and tested at California Base.[9] After several weeks of testing, the YMS-09 received some external changes before being formally adopted as the MS-09 Dom.[10] It was mostly produced at Granada and California Base.[11] By late September, U.C. 0079, early mass production had begun at the Granada factory.[1]

According to one account, Dozle Zabi planned to send Ramba Ral three Doms to aid him in his mission to destroy the White Base. However, M'Quve, knowing that Ramba Ral knew about Kycilia Zabi's mining operations on Earth and wanting to conceal it from the rest of the Zabi family, withheld the reinforcements and told Ral that the supply ship carrying them was destroyed.[12]

Later, M'Quve provided Kycilia's ace mobile suit team, the Black Tri-Stars: Gaia, Ortega, and Mash, with three Doms (presumably the same units that he withheld from Ral). Using the new mobile suits, the trio of Zeon aces launched a night attack on the White Base while it was being resupplied. Thanks to the Dom's mobility, firepower, and the teamwork of the Tri-Stars, the White Base team had a difficult time fighting them. However, Gaia was unable to defeat the RX-78-2 Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray alone, so he attempted to use the team's famed "Jet Stream Attack" against it. The first attack ended with the Gundam barely evading, causing the Tri-Stars to immediately resume their attack. During their second attempted use of Jet Stream Attack, however, Amuro destroyed Mash's Dom, but was too late to evade the attack from Ortega's. However, Matilda Ajan crashed her Medea into Ortega's Dom, only to have Ortega crush the Medea's cockpit with the Dom's fists, killing her.[13][14]

There were two accounts of the remaining members of the Black Tri-Stars' ultimate fate. In one account, the two surviving members went on to fight in Operation Odessa, during which they fought the Gundam once again and were killed in battle.[15] In another, they were immediately defeated and killed by the Gundam and the FF-X7-Bst Core Booster after Mash's death.[14]

A number of Doms participated in Operation Odessa. On November 9, U.C. 0079, two units were seen guarding a Dobday-class land battleship. They were destroyed by the RTX-440 Ground Assault Type Guntank piloted by Engineering Lieutenant Aline Nazon.[16]

Seven MS-09 units participated in the Battle of Jaburo on November 30, U.C. 0079, half of which were of the enhanced ground combat variant MS-09F/trop Dom Tropen.[17][14][18] One unit was destroyed by anti-air fire while dropping,[17][14] another was destroyed by the Gundam inside Jaburo.[14]

At least two Doms were part of the defense force for Ginias Sahalin's Lhasa mountain base, the development base for the Apsaras III. When Federation Forces led by Isan Ryer attacked the base in early December,[19] one unit was seen defending the base from Jet Core Boosters using a Zaku machine gun. Another attempted to destroy one of the RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Type, but was damaged by Karen Joshua's RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type and destroyed by the Guntank from behind.[20]

Variants[]

  • MS-09 Dom (African Front)
Painted in sand brown, these Doms were operated by the A Platoon, 1st MS Battalion, 5th Ground Mobile Infantry Division of the Principality of Zeon's Earth Attack Force (known as the "Caracal Corps").
  • MS-09 Dom (Naransolongo Boldbayar)
The exclusive machine of Captain Naransolongo Boldbayar, the "Silver Wolf of Mongolia". It is painted in his personal colors of black with silver shoulders. In addition to the Giant Bazooka, it is equipped with a Heat Vajra Rod and a Knuckle Shield. Appears in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam - Zeon MS Boys: The War of Independence.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Dom's model number has been commonly known as MS-09 since the Mobile Suit Gundam TV series was aired in 1979. The "B"-suffix was officially established in 1986, as shown in the mechanic section of 1/144 MS-09G Dwadge's model kit manual. However, almost all subsequent sources continued to use the MS-09 model number.
  • In the original TV series and the movie trilogy, the Dom's heat saber is yellow when not heated and blue when heated. However, in subsequent media, such as the 08th MS Team OVA, they were depicted as grey when not heated and bright orange when heated.
  • In Episode 25 of the original series, the Dom's scattering beam cannon was erroneously depicted as firing a single concentrated beam.
  • The ZGMF-XX09T DOM Trooper from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny is a direct homage to the Dom.
  • October 6th has become known as "Dom Day" (ドムの日 Domu no hi?) among some Gundam fans due to Japanese wordplay for 10 (とお ?) —but pronounced as do (?)— and mu (?) from sixth day (むいか Mui ka?) sounding similar to "Domu".
  • A Dom appears in the Capcom fighting game, Star Gladiator as an unused, scrapped character and in an unpolished state. Though it is not referred to by name, its name in the Vs screen is Blodia, the name of the protagonist's mech from another fighting game, Cyberbots.
  • DOM Shoes (One Piece)

    DOM Shoes in One Piece.

In the most recent Final Saga of the One Piece manga/anime series, a genius scientist called Dr. Vegapunk has invented a type of mechanical boots called the DOM Shoes (DOM(ドム) シューズ, Domu Shūzu?). These DOM Shoes contain various functions such as allowing the wearer to float, hover, and/or can even propel the wearer into the air to "fly" for a short amount of time.[21]
