The MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom (グフカスタム Gufu Kasutamu?) is an upgraded variant of the MS-07B Gouf introduced in OVA Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team[1].

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom was one of the MS-07 Gouf series machines produced at the very end of the One Year War, and it was based on the MS-07B Gouf.[2] Despite the mass-produced B-type Gouf having better mobility than the MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type it was replacing, its fixed armaments - namely the finger vulcans and heat rod - suffered from short effective combat range, limited ammunition, and low effectiveness against heavy armor.[2][3][4] As a result, it lost the versatility that was an advantage of mobile suit.[2] The Gouf Custom (or B-3 Gouf) was a machine tuned to ensure versatility and improve long-range combat performance.[2] The Gouf series were mainly mass-produced at Zeon's lunar base Granada and California Base on Earth by updating the production lines of the J-Type Zaku, but the B-3 Gouf was said to use many MS parts that were redesigned and produced in Zeon homeland for the development of a flight type unit, and it was often called "Gouf Custom", as it was different from and better than the original California Base MS in both maneuverability and mobility.[5]

The body and head of the Gouf Custom further improved on the various functions and structure of the B-type Gouf, making it a highly refined unit equipped with various sensor precision, devices for aerial combat, and a lightweight, high-output generator.[4] The arm module of the B-type Gouf was equipped with fixed armaments to reduce weight and improve combat power without the need for optional armaments, but it was deemed problematic in terms of versatility, and improvements were made for the Gouf Custom.[4] This was done by replacing the finger vulcans on the left hand with a normal manipulator, and a detachable triple 35mm Gatling gun was mounted on the left forearm instead.[4] Additionally, it was equipped with a Gatling shield with a 75mm Gatling gun which could be easily detached when transitioning to close combat,[6] and a heat rod with a thinner rod diameter to extend the effective range, resulting in a machine with all-round combat characteristics.[6] Overall, the Gouf Custom was the favorite MS of many ace pilots and achieved brilliant results in battle, and it was widely considered to be the masterpiece of the Gouf series.[2]

Armaments

  • Heat Rod (Anchor Type)[7]
A variation of the electromagnetic whip used as a fixed armament for the Gouf Custom.[2] which replaced the original MS-07B's thick tentacle heat rod with limited length and combat range. The Gouf Custom's heat rod featured a magnetic grappler mounted on a thin cable, allowing the right forearm to store a much greater length of heat rod and giving the weapon a much greater reach. In addition, its load capacity had been increased to the point where the MS itself could be suspended from it.[2] The heat rod (anchor type) could release an electric charge to disable an enemy mobile suit,[1] and in the hands of highly-skilled pilots, it can be utilized for hanging onto buildings or enemy units to buy time for the Gouf Custom to launch surprise attacks.[1]
  • Triple 35mm Gatling Gun[7]
Developed as a replacement for the MS-07 Gouf series' built-in finger vulcans,[2] the three-barreled 35mm Gatling gun could be mounted on Gouf Custom's left forearm. Despite the weapon's small caliber, its high rates of fire could destroy thin-armored EFF mobile weapons.[1] The Gatling gun's magazine is detachable and can be replaced with spare ones stored on the Gouf Custom's rear skirt armor.[2] This increased the ammunition capacity without compromising the inherent versatility of the MS.[1][2] The Gatling gun had a option latch in the rear to hold the Gatling shield.[8]
  • Gatling Shield[7]
The Gatling shield was a combination of a large Gatling gun with a modified Gouf shield, which granted both offensive and defensive power in one single weapon. The Gatling shields equipped on some Gouf-type units deployed in the latter stages of the One Year War were designed to counter the beam sabers, close-combat weapons used by EFF mobile suits.[7] Although the B-type Gouf was developed with hand-to-hand combat in mind, it faced difficulties getting close to the opponent due to beam saber's long reach and exceptional piercing/cutting ability, so it was no longer possible for the Goufs to engage in close combat effectively.[7] The Gatling Shield was developed to secure the initiative in "distance" during close combat.[7] Furthermore, it was easy to discard the bulky Gatling gun when moving to close combat, avoiding dead weight. The Gouf Custom could then quickly switch its combat tactic with the triple Gatling gun or heat saber, making the Gatling shield an armament that truly gave the "Gouf" all-round combat characteristics.[7]
Attached to Gouf Custom's left forearm on top of the triple 35mm Gatling gun, it was the same shield used by B-type Gouf and compatible with the Gatling shield system.[7] Its structure was focused on reducing damage caused by bullets, kicks, and slashes during close combats[7]
  • 75mm Gatling Gun[7]
The Gatling gun featured a cyclic, 6-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing-reloading sequence. This configuration allowed higher rates of fire to be achieved without the barrel overheating. The Gatling gun has a caliber of 75mm, and it could easily destroy EFF's mobile suits, such as RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Type if fired accurately.[1][7] The Gatling gun was drum-and-belt fed, with the entire set being welded onto a specially-designed frame to be mounted onto the Gouf shield. It was fired via a handheld trigger which was controlled via a normal MS manipulator.[1] The Gatling gun could be ejected from the Gouf shield if its ammunition was depleted, or whenever its weight proved to be a hindrance when its pilot needed speed and maneuverability.[1]
  • Heat Saber Type-DIII[7]
Also known as heat sword, the heat saber type-DIII was an improved version of the type-βIV model used by B-type Gouf. Unlike the latter which was a disposable weapon formed by polymer/ceramic materials, the heat saber type-DIII was forged as one piece in broad sword-style and could be used repeatedly.[7] Compared to the Zaku's heat tomahawk, the heat saber had a longer reach, allowing for a greater range of attack. By heating it to a scorching hot temperature, the heat saber type-DIII could melt through enemy armor, or it could be used simply as a giant sword for slashing attacks without heating.[2] The heat saber type-DIII is stored at the back of the Gatling shield when not in use.[2]
  • 120mm Machine Gun
A standard weapon for Zaku type mobile suits. It was a shell firing gun that did not require energy to be used, however its effectiveness against heavy armor was very limited. This model used a 100-round drum magazine.
  • 90mm Assault Rifle[9]
The Gouf Custom piloted by Lou Roher was equipped with a new model 90mm assault rifle, it appeared to be an upgrade of the MMP-80 90mm machine gun.
  • 3-tube Missile Launcher[9]
The Gouf Custom piloted by Manning was equipped with a 3-tube Missile Launcher which could be attached to the left forearm for ranged attack. This weapon was similar to the model used by MS-06D Zaku Desert Type and MS-14C Gelgoog Cannon.
The customized Gouf Custom piloted by Cpt. Naransolongo Boldbayar was equipped with a pivoted heat knuckle on its right forearm.[10] The heat knuckle was a compact version of knuckle shield used by the Zaku II and other Zeon MS. It had three spikes placed on the knuckle plate that rests in front of the manipulator. These spikes make the heat knuckle an effective bashing weapon.
  • Heat Vajra Stick[10]
Naransolongo Boldbayar's Gouf Custom was armed with a heat vajra stick (ヒート金剛棒 Hīto Kongōbō?), a blunt weapon used for melee combat. The vajra stick is a type of club with a heavy head and spikes to deliver powerful blows.[10]
  • Hand Grenade
Naransolongo Boldbayar's Gouf Custom was armed with a couple of hand grenades which were stored on the rear skirt armor.[10] Hand grenade was a throwing weapon that could be set to detonate upon impact with the target or timed to explode after a preset time.[11] They came in multiple variants, allowing them to perform different roles in battle.

Special Equipment & Features

  • Flare Launcher
The Gouf Custom unit piloted by Norris Packard features a Flare Launcher which is installed at the back of the mobile suit[1]. The flare fired from the launcher is for signaling friendly forces nearby.

History

The MS-07B Gouf was intended as a counter measure to the newer EFF MS, and to replace the MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type. While never replacing the J-type Zaku II, it managed to see limited number of units produced. Zeonic eventually cancelled production of the MS-07B when Zimmad's MS-09 Dom was introduced. Despite this, further development of the Gouf continued, producing several experimental units, including flight-capable prototypes. Some of the components of these flight-capable prototypes were used to develop and create the MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom.[5]

While having similar appearance as the MS-07B Gouf, the Gouf Custom had better weapons, better mobility, was lighter overall and thus faster. Unlike the Zaku, which fights well in forests, and the Dom, which fights well on flat plains, the Gouf and Gouf Custom fight best in urban settings.[1] Norris Packard's Gouf Custom easily destroyed three RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Types and damaged two RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Types before being defeated in battle by Shiro Amada and his RX-79[G]Ez-8 Gundam Ez8.[1]

Two Gouf Customs were assigned to Zeon's Midnight Fenrir Corps for the assault on Jaburo on November 30, U.C. 0079, and later used for the defense of the California Base.[9] In The Plot to Assassinate Gihren, a white Gouf Custom, used by the White Rose of the Capital Defense Battalion, was modified to be piloted by the single-armed Lt. Lance Garfield. He single handedly used his unit to defeat a pair of customized assault Rick Doms and squared off evenly against an MS-17 Galbaldy α. He is eventually killed at the conclusion of the duel with both units effectively destroyed in the process, purposely missing the cockpit of his opponent as to entrust the future to a younger generation.

Notes & Trivia

  • The Gouf Custom is one of two Zeon mobile weapons that had its cockpit modified to be piloted by someone with one arm, the other being the MA-06 Val Walo.
  • The blade of Heat Saber Type-DIII did not change color or glow when it was used by Norris Packard's Gouf Custom and Zhukov's MS-07H-8 Gouf Flight Type. Fans have speculated that the saber's blade could be super-heated without any change in color or glowing, or that Norris/Zhukov preferred to not switch on the heating mechanism.
    • On a related note, when Norris' Gouf Custom battled Shiro Amada's RX-79[G]Ez-8 Gundam Ez8, the heat saber only crippled the Gundam Ez8's arm without slicing it. No explanation for this was provided.
