Disambiguation:

The MS-06F Zaku II F Type (ザクII F型 Zaku II F-gata?) is a mobile suit introduced in ONA Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.[1] Known users includes the Salamanders Squadron and customized units are used by the Red Wolf Squadron.[1]

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Developed by the Zeon military and manufactured by Zeonic Company, the Zaku II F Type is a mass-produced version of the Zaku II series. For mass-production purpose, anti-nuclear equipment such as triple-layer composite armor and radiation shielding liquid featured on Zaku II C Type has been removed,[2] resulting in a lighter and faster machine. As radars are rendered useless under Minovsky Particles interference, the Zakus, mobile suits designed for visual combat, achieved great success in their early campaigns against the Earth Federation Forces. Ace pilots in the Zeon Forces were allowed to have their mobile suits customized with color schemes and equipment that differed from standard units, resulted in many variations.[2] For commander units, head-mounted communication antennas are common.

For Zeon's Red Wolf Squadron, each member's Zaku II F Type features different color schemes and are equipped with customized right shoulder shields as a common feature.

  • Solari's unit is painted in light brick-red color. It has two communication antennas on both side of the head which resemble wolf ears, and has claws painted on its feet as a wolf motif. Her Zaku's code name is Red Wolf Alpha;
  • Chubs' unit has distinctive spikes on the left shoulder pauldron which are for intimidation purposes, not for actual combat. Chubs' unit coloring is on the shoulders and head. His Zaku's code name is Red Wolf Bravo;
  • LeSean's unit has the shortest combat history and is the least customized, with the unit's coloring featured on the left shoulder pauldron. His Zaku's code name is Red Wolf Charlie;
  • Kale's unit is primarily equipped with a long rifle for medium to long-range attack. His suit is painted in light grey and the unit's color is on the left shoulder and manipulators. His Zaku's code name is Red Wolf Delta.

Armaments[]

  • Shoulder Shield
Mounted on the right shoulder, it is a simple defensive device used to block most physical projectiles. The Shoulder Shields for Red Wolf Squadron's Zaku II F Types are longer than regular units with four strips of armor plates (nails) inscribed at the bottom and with three Shield Guns being embedded between the nails. A handle is installed inside the shield for aiming the Shield Guns, or to be used the Shield as a bashing weapon.
  • Shield Gun
  • 120mm Machine Gun
A standard weapon for Zaku type mobile suits. It is a shell firing gun that does not require energy to be used, however its effectiveness against heavy armor is very limited. It holds 100 rounds per drum with spare drums that can be stored on waist armor.
  • 280mm Zaku Bazooka
Another standard weapon for Zaku type MS, the bazooka fires explosive rounds that were quite effective against the armor of Earth Federation's mobile weapons and battleships. It is clip-fed with detachable magazine inserted into the top rear barrel.
  • 3-tube Missile Pod
Equipped with wire-guided missiles for accurate and powerful mid- to long-range range attack, the 3-tube missile pods can be mounted on the hardpoints of Zaku II lower calves as well as forearms.
  • Wire-Guided Missile
A type of missile that is guided by signals sent to it via thin wires connected between the missile and its guidance mechanism, which is located inside the missile pod. As the missile flies, the wires are reeled out behind it for accurate short-to-mid range attack. The missile is available with a variety of warheads, including explosives, pellet shots and flashbang.[3]
  • Heat Hawk
An axe-shaped close combat weapon, it uses a super-heated blade to cut through the armor of enemy MS or vehicles. The thermal energy is generated by the power output of the Zaku II F Type's thermonuclear reactor and relayed through the MS' hands. The Heat Hawk can be mounted on the rear waist armor when not in use.
  • Long Rifle
A MS-use sniper rifle mainly used for anti-ship combat as well as against turrets and infrastructures. It discharges specialized rounds at a high initial velocity, which can split into submunitions after penetrating target's armor, destroying it from within. The Long Rifle is magazine-fed and has a special sight on the left for enhanced targeting.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Hardpoint
An attachment location on a mobile suit's structural frame designed to carry an external load or weapon, such as missile pod. The Zaku II F type has a total of four hardpoints, one on each forearm and one on each lower calf.
  • Parachute Pack
An optional back-mounted MS equipment created by the Zeon for paradrop missions from the Gaw carrier. The Parachute Pack contains a single parachute to help in making a safe descent to the ground. Once touchdown had been accomplished the parachute would be ejected so not to hinder the mobile suit performance in ground combat.

History[]

The MS-06F Zaku II F Type has been the mainstay of Zeon's mobile suit force throughout the One Year War, with numerous units assigned to regular pilots as well as special operation MS teams, such as the Red Wolf Squadron and the Salamanders Squadron of the 7th Mobile Suit Battalion. On November 6, U.C. 0079, the Red Wolves and the Salamanders received distress call from Maj. Joshua Stein, commander of the partnered Stein Battalion to assist the recapturement of E.F.F.'s military headquarter in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Both squadrons duly obliged and dispatched their Zaku II F Types in time to dispel E.F.F.'s ambush with eventual occupation of the military HQ. The E.F.F. mounted a surprise attack on the early morning of November 7, U.C. 0079. Spearheaded by the RX-78(G)E Gundam EX, the E.F.F. inflicted heavy losses and casualties to the occupying Zeon Forces, including the loss of Red Wolf's pilots Reid Ghelfi and Kale Zavaleta, and Red Wolves' Zaku IIs were no match against Gundam EX's high mobility, tough armor and devastating firepower, resulted in total destruction of all four mobile suits. The remaining Salamanders' Zaku IIs fought on valiantly, but the entire squadron was eventually annihilated by Gundam EX.

During November U.C. 0079, units of Zaku II F Type was deployed for the defense of Odessa spaceport to provide safe passage to retreating Zeon Forces to board the remaining HLVs back to Space.[4]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • According to mechanical supervisor Kimitoshi Yamane, the redesign of the Zeon mobile suit's front skirt with individually movable armor plates is meant for realistic mecha movement, whereas the redesign of Zaku II F Type's leg power-supply pipes is for the ease of CG animation.[5]

LeSean's Zaku II fires 120mm Zaku Machine Gun

  • Due to animation error, LeSean's Zaku II is seen griping the Zaku Machine Gun's foldable hand grip with its left hand (20:00 in Episode 1), when in fact the hand grip is seen in stand-by position (i.e. in parallel with the gun barrel), which indicates the left hand is not holding onto anything while the gun is fired.

  • Due to animation error, A Salamanders Squadron's Zaku II was illustrated in Chubs' unit color (20:57 in Episode 1), when in fact Chubs' unit was destroyed earlier (19:34) with the pilot killed.
