The MRC-F20 SUMO is a mobile suit that appears in the anime series ∀ Gundam. The Gold Type was piloted by Harry Ord.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The MRC-F20 SUMO (Strike Unit for Maneuver Operation) is a mobile suit used by the Queen of the Moon, Dianna Soreil's Royal Guard, and its model number "MRC-F20" is an abbreviation for "Moon Race Commemoration-Fighter 20".[1] There are two color variants of the SUMOs, respectively piloted by the Captain (Gold Type) and general members (Silver Type) of the Royal Guard. The performance of the SUMOs are essentially similar, however, the Gold Type SUMO has a higher performance compared to its regular Silver counterparts, due to a different head unit and armor specifications.[1][2] The head unit of the Gold Type SUMO has a shutter that can open to reveal a scanning turret called "Scarface".[3] There are documents to suggest that the head unit has other functions, but the details are not known.[2]

Despite its bulky appearance, the SUMO has high maneuverability, thanks to the use of the IFBD (I-Field Beam Drive) system which it shares with the System-∀99 ∀ Gundam. The IFBD covers the unit with I-Field beams generated from inside the suit over the surface, and controls the beams to move the suit. This enables the SUMO to achieve high mobility combat and gives it the required propulsion to hover above the ground.[4][5] The slits located throughout the unit are receptors for driving the I-Field beams, and support SUMO's high maneuverability, allowing the suit to move instantly in any vector.[6]

Like the Turn A, the SUMO has a detachable cockpit situated at its pelvis, and its internal structure shares many similarities with the Turn A's Core Fighter. Indeed, when Loran Cehack abandoned the Turn A with his Core Fighter, the Ghingham Fleet had a SUMO cockpit retrofitted onto the Turn A for their own use. This, along with the fact that both suits use IFBD system, indicates a relationship between them, but the actual detail is unclear.[7] The SUMO's ultimate origin is unknown, but two main theories exist: The SUMO was developed by the Moonrace, or the SUMO is a relic of Dark History excavated from the Moon's Mountain Cycle, but its mass production is impossible as it was created with technologies that are far more advanced than those of the Moonrace in the current era, who later developed specialized weapons for the SUMO.[8][9][10]

Armaments[]

  • Hand Beam Gun
A foldable, medium and long range beam gun that was separately developed by the Moonrace and exclusively for the SUMO. It has a built-in energy supply and is recharged by changing the gun's backpack.[2][11] Because the hand beam gun was not designed as an anti-ship weapon, it has a lower output than the Turn A's beam rifle.[12]
  • Heat Fan
A weapon that can be used as a shield and as a weapon in melee combat. It is possible to physically cut through objects by heating the edge portion, and block beam saber using wave interference. In addition, the heat fan's tip can emit energy to form an I-Field beam saber. When not in use this weapon would be stored on the rear waist armor. It was originally a weapon exclusively for commanders, but its origin is unknown.[2][12]

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • MFE (Moduration Fractal Edge) Gundium FGI (Functionally Gradient Intelligent) Composite Materials
The SUMO's armor was made using the MFE Gundium FGI Composite Materials, which were developed by the Moonrace's scientific team utilizing limited nanotechnology resources. It was originally created incorporating a progressive learning function into the FE (Fractal Edge) armor. One peculiar characteristic of the MFE-type armor is that its defensive strength increases according to the magnitude of the attack it receives, and neutralizes the incoming damage upon the second attack, so long as the first attack does not cause fatal damage to the armor. The difference in the specifications and color between the SUMOs could be attributed to this unique feature of the armor. However, the armor has not been able to perform its intended function as the nanomodule that controls the armor's self-evolution did not work as planned. As a result, the research itself has been abandoned, and the end product was only a minor update to the conventional FE armor.[2]
  • Helical Phase Hyper-oscillation Gauge Collapser Pile (HPHGCP)
The SUMO is powered by an HPHGCP-type generator located in its chest, which is a very high efficiency energy source that provides tremendous energy output to the SUMO and also feeds directly to the FRP units.[3] The HPHGCP exerts IFR (I-Field Restriction) as a secondary effect, which suppresses and limits the movement of a target by using a device that expands the IFBD's domain (area of control), thereby seizing control of an opposing suit. Although this effect of IFR is, in principle, limited to contemporaries of the same era, it is said that it can affect all types of mobile weapons.[2][13]
  • I-Field Generator
An I-Field expansion, amplification, and projection device that is attached to the SUMO's arm. By diverting the energy from the IFBD to produce the IFR effect, the I-Field generator can create a disabling field known as "IF Booster" to interfere with and suppress the movement of IFBD-driven mobile suits, as well as to contain the spread of beam and guided weapons. The I-Field generator can also increase the expansion and contraction of I-Field, and strengthen the atomic structures of the device itself, allowing it to be used as a striking weapon called "IF Bunker".[2][12] If faced with a high output beam attack that is too much for the generator to handle, it could be overloaded and explode, destroying the SUMO's arm in the process.[14]
  • Field Repulsion Processer (FRP) Unit
The FRP unit inside the SUMO's legs is a system that generates repulsion in space to produce propulsive force, and is used for flight under gravity and gliding above the ground.[15] Additionally, this device can be used in microgravity.[2]
  • Skirt
The left and right sides of the SUMO's waist can be fitted with a pair of boosters. Due to their shape they are called "skirts". Each booster is a hybrid rocket engine with a total of seven rockets, one main engine, and six auxiliary engines.[1][2] These boosters are prepared for long-term flights under gravity, but are unsuitable for combat. They were repurposed from the same boosters used in the Moonrace's spaceships on their return to Earth, and were not specifically developed for the SUMOs.[8][16]

History[]

When the Dianna Counter forces arrived on Earth to begin colonization in C.C. 2345, they brought a variety of mobile suits with them, including the MRC-F20 SUMO. These units are mainly piloted by the general members of the Royal Guard. The standard production model came in a silver color and was known as the "SUMO Silver Type."

A notable SUMO unit during the Earth-Moonrace conflict was the custom "Gold SUMO" piloted by Royal Guard Captain Harry Ord. Throughout the conflict in C.C. 2345, Harry Ord piloted the Gold SUMO against a variety of mobile suits, in which he had great success in most of his battles, even when outnumbered by the Ghingham Fleet's G-838 Mahiroo. Much of the SUMO's full potential was shown by Harry's piloting skills.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • To obtain the SUMO at Gundam Breaker Mobile, the parts (including the Harry pilot) can be purchased at the Arena Coin Shop exchange, and each part requires a combination of twelve total parts per body and weapons. The parts were reprinted twice in 2021, with the second reprint features an Alteration option for the parts.
