The METEOR (Mobile suit Embedded Tactical Enforcer) is a Mobile Suit support system introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Mobile Suit Embedded Tactical Enforcer, or METEOR, is an armed module designed to support the nuclear-powered ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam and ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. It is heavily armed with several missile launchers distributed throughout its body, a small pair of beam cannons at the sides, a larger pair of beam cannons in front and a pair of beam sword also at the front. With these armaments, the METEOR has the firepower of a warship or even a mobile fortress, and the Justice Gundam and Freedom Gundam can use their "Multi Lock-On System" to target these weaponry at multiple enemy units and attack them all at once.
The METEOR has a pair of powerful engines derived from those used by ZGMF-1017M GINN High Maneuver Type for high speed movements. It also has its own internal battery, but is designed to draw energy from the Justice and Freedom when docked with either units. When not used by Freedom and Justice, the METEOR is attached to the hull of the FFMH-Y101 Eternal, a warship designed to support both Gundams, and can be used as gun turrets in this form. Two other METEOR units are later retrofitted with nuclear reactors and N-Jammer canceller for use by non-nuclear powered MS.
Armaments
- 120cm High-energy Beam Cannon
- A powerful beam cannon that is mounted in the tip of each movable arm unit. The beam cannon's caliber is warship class and this makes it one of the most destructive weapons to be usable by a MS.
- 93.7cm High-energy Beam Cannon
- A pair of these smaller caliber beam cannons are mounted on the sides of the unit. They are weaker than the 120cm high-energy beam cannons but have higher rate of fire.
- MA-X200 Beam Sword
- A pair of large beam swords that are emitted from the movable arm units, they provide the METEOR with close combat capabilities and can easily cut through warships and MS. Each beam sword is generated jointly by the emitters above and below the 120cm high-energy beam cannon.
- 60cm "Erinaceus" Anti-Ship Missile Launcher
- The METEOR has a total of 77 missiles, 22 are mounted in each pod at the side of the unit, another 12 are mounted at the back of each arm unit, and lastly 9 are mounted on the tail fin. These missiles can be fired all at once for a devastating missile barrage and to destroy multiple enemy units.
History
A total of eight METEOR units were presumably built by ZAFT, but only six have been accounted for: METEORs 01 and 02, 05 and 06, and 07 and 08. METEORs 01 and 02 were used during the First Alliance-PLANT War by the Eternal as a part of the Three Ships Alliance.[1] One unit was used by the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and destroyed in battle by the ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam, while the other was used by the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam to pierce the Jachin Due's armor and was presumably destroyed in the explosion of GENESIS.[2]
During the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the Eternal was shown to have two new newly built METEOR units, and they were identified as "METEOR 07 and 08" on radar. The ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam and ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam used these two METEOR units to destroy one relay station of the Requiem superweapon.[3] Later, the Strike Freedom used its METEOR to critically damage the massive Mobile Space Fortress, Messiah.[4]
In the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: The Edge where events were depicted differently, Infinite Justice and its METEOR headed towards Requiem and fought against the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam. During the fight, the METEOR was damaged and subsequently ejected by the Infinite Justice as it continued its battle against the Destiny. What happened to the METEOR afterwards is unknown.
In the manga Gundam SEED Destiny Astray, METEOR 05 and 06 are shown to be in Junk Guild's possession and refitted with nuclear reactors and Neutron Jammer Cancellers so that Serpent Tail's MBF-P03secondL Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second L and ZGMF-1001 Elijah's ZAKU Phantom]] can use them to protect GENESIS Alpha from an Earth Alliance attack. After the battle, the pair of METEORs were returned to Junk Guild.
ZAFT also created a variant of the METEOR, the Verne 35A/MPFM Multipurpose Flight Module, which lacks the METEOR's heavy armaments but can be used as a booster for a variety of mobile suits and shuttles. However, it can be equipped with missile launchers when needed, as demonstrated when Jean Carry's MBF-M1 Astray equipped with the 35A/MPFM module attacked the ZGMF-YX21R Proto-Saviour.

Notes & Trivia
- The METEOR is similar to the RX-78GP03D Gundam "Dendrobium Orchis" mobile weapon in the Universal Century series Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and GS-9900 G-Falcon from After War Gundam X. The series Mobile Suit Gundam 00 also features a similar technology called GNR-001 GN Arms. Among them, only Dendrobium Orchis is able to match METEOR in terms of size.
- Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn uses the METEORs as the Burst Mode for the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice, replacing the normal movesets of both Gundams with that of the METEOR unit while Burst Mode lasts. The original Freedom and Justice Gundams cannot use the METEORs at all in this game.
- The METEOR units appear in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, J, W, K, L, Z, and Z2 Saisei-hen. In Alpha 3, J, and W the METEORs are optional equipment for the Freedom and Justice which replace the normal attacks of the Gundams with their own attacks, and feature a combination attack between both Gundams using the swords on the METEOR units in concert. In all future games, the METEORs are instead available as a powerful attack for the Strike Freedom or Infinite Justice when either unit is standing near the Eternal.
- Freedom + METEOR, Justice + METEOR, Strike Freedom + METEOR as well as ∞ Justice + METEOR are all playable units in SD Gundam Capsule Online.
- The METEOR-mounted Freedom, Justice, Strike Freedom, and Infinite Justice all appear in the Alliance vs ZAFT. series though all units struggle against close quarter units that are directly past its ranged weapons and can easily stun lock them repeatedly. In the Gundam Extreme Vs. series, the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice used their METEORs for their burst attacks in Full Burst Mode and in a beam blade combo respectively. Additionally, the mounted versions also appear as arcade mode bosses. Unlike the anime, the Strike Freedom's Full Burst Mode with the METEOR also has it release its Super DRAGOONs and fire simultaneously.
