The MDE262S Proud Defender is a support craft introduced in the animated film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
A support craft developed by Kira Yamato in cooperation with Albert Heinlein and the Compass Design Bureau. It was originally designed to dock with the STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam to give it increased offensive and defensive capabilities.[1][2] However, due to development delays and the eventual destruction of the Rising Freedom, it was re-adjusted for the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, replacing its Super DRAGOON wings to form the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam.
While the Proud Defender was originally meant to be an unmanned unit, it can be hastily modified with manual control systems to allow for piloted operation from inside a makeshift cockpit. As this cockpit is not rated for combat use, the pilot has to exit the craft during combat.

The Proud Defender was a personal project of Kira Yamato, originally intended to improve the combat abilities of the STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam, and was worked on inside the LHM-BB03S Millennium's hangar during most of Kira's service onboard the vessel in C.E. 75.[3]
After Lacus Clyne was rescued from the Kingdom of Foundation-controlled Artemis space fortress, she piloted the Proud Defender to deliver it to Kira's ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, docking with the mobile suit to form the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam.[3]

- According to director Mitsuo Fukuda, the Proud Defender was not meant to be a manned craft, and that in-universe the cockpit was a hasty refit, explaining why Lacus Clyne had to sit in the cockpit lying forward like on a motorbike.
- In the SEED Freedom Novelization, the Proud Defender is attached to the Rising Freedom's back while undergoing testing. This combination might have been called "Mighty Rising Freedom"[1]
- The Proud Defender bears similarities to previous support craft in Gundam that can combine with a mobile suit in the form of a backpack to enhance its performance, such as the FXA-05D G-Defenser, and the GNR-010 0 Raiser.
