Disambiguation:

The MA-08 Big Zam (MA-08 ビグ・ザム Bigu Zamu?) is a mobile armor first introduced in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.[1][2] and later appeared in the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series.[3]

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

A gigantic mobile armor produced and deployed by the Principality of Zeon, the Big Zam was composed of a torso resembling a space fortress or a mobile artillery turret, and was supported by a pair of large legs.[1] Its signature weapon was a large mega particle gun located at the center of the torso, surrounded by an array of mega particle guns that encircled the torso.[1] It could also create an invisible barrier via its I-field generator to deflect enemy's beam attacks.[2][3] As a large mobile weapon, the Big Zam was controlled by a crew of 2-3 people, comprised of a commander, a pilot and a gunner.[1] By 0085, the Big Zam formed a major component of Zeon's gunboat diplomacy toward Earth Federation.

Armaments[]

  • Large Mega Particle Gun[1]
The primary weapon of the Big Zam was a large mega particle gun located at the center of the mobile armor's body, which drew a vast amount of energy from the Big Zam's fusion reactors, allowing it to fire a mega particle beam that could destroy multiple targets with a single shot.
  • Mega Particle Gun[1]
The Big Zam was armed with a total of forty mega particle guns which encircled the mobile armor's torso.[4] Their positioning enabled Big Zam with a near 360-degree defense against mobile weapons and battleships. However, such arrangement was also a weakness because if a mobile suit could get directly above, below, or simply close enough to the mobile armor, it would be out of the mega particle guns' targeting range.
To protect the Big Zam's undercarriage, a blind spot not covered by the mega particle guns, the Big Zam's legs was equipped with a pair of large claws with three pointy toes which functioned as mobile armor's support while standing on ground, as well as to crush enemy's mobile weapons through sheer size and mass. Furthermore, each leg's 3x toes are massive kinetic missiles that, despite not explosive in nature, utilize their MS-size and mass to crush enemy machines.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • I-Field Generator
The Big Zam was equipped with an I-field generator to create anti-beam electromagnetic membrane for protecting the mobile armor from EFF's beam attacks. When Minovsky particles were released into the air or into open space, the positive and negative particles spontaneously align themselves into a three-dimensional cubic lattice. Due to the repulsive and electrostatic forces between the Minovsky particles, this lattice functions as a kind of a force field known as an I-field. This field had difficulty permeating conductive materials like metal, water, and plasma, and it exerted a repulsive force against mega particles.
When the I-field generator was activated, the resulting I-field formed an invisible barrier in the form of electromagnetic membrane around Big Zam, deflecting enemy's mega particle beams and hence protecting it from any incoming beam attacks.[2][3] Due to its high power requirements, the I-field generator originally could only be installed in large mobile weapons. However, the I-Field generator remained ineffective against kinetic based projectile attacks, and beam weapons could still cripple the Big Zam if fired at point blank range.

History[]

Developed by the Principality of Zeon, the Big Zam underwent mass production at the insistence of Dozle Zabi, commander of asteroid fortress Solomon. Dozle piloted the Big Zam Unit 1 during the First Battle of Solomon, but his unit was destroyed and killed by Earth Federation Forces' RGM-79 Light-Type Guncannon piloted by Sayla Mass.[5][2][3] Despite this, Big Zam entered into limited production, all to be place under the direct command of Gihren Zabi's National Defense Force. A team of at least three Big Zams were deployed by Col. M'Quve during the Battle of Luna II in late December UC 0079, which resulted in Zeon's victory and signified EFF's defeat in Space.[4][5][3]

By 0085, at least 13 units were created, with 4 of them being sent to protect Solar Ray; budget of creating up to 22 units in total was also approved. It serves as a major component of Zeon's Gunboat Diplomacy toward Earth Federation.[6]
