The Luggun is a reconnaissance aircraft used by Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. It appeared in the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series and later Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The Luggun was a reconnaissance aircraft developed by Zeon that featured a unique design, with a raised cockpit and two radomes connected to the fuselage by long struts. The struts that the radomes are connected to can rotate to position them either above the Luggun for anti-aircraft radar or below it for ground radar. The radar has very high power to enable long-distance searching even under dispersed Minovsky particles. The Luggun also has high information gathering capabilities using infrared and sound sensors. The Luggun has two cockpits, with the main cockpit used for piloting and another within the fuselage for patrolling. The two cockpits are connected by a passageway, and the seats can be moved. It is armed with a twin machine guns on the wings as well as missile launchers below the main cockpit. It also possesses a small bomb bay inside the fuselage. It is capable of VTOL using slit shaped vectoring nozzles on the bottom of the aircraft. It possesses high thrust that enables it to transport a suspended Zaku II over short distances. Despite being a reconnaissance aircraft, it has high performance and unlike other Zeon aircraft possesses some protection against the vulcan guns of the FF-X7 Core Fighter.
Armaments[]
- 20mm Twin Machine Gun
- The Luggun is armed with two 20mm 2-barrel machine guns, with one mounted on the end of each wing. These guns normally face outward to fire port and starboard, but and are able to rotate to face the front or rear. The barrels of the guns are also capable of raising and lowering to change their firing angle.
- Missile Launcher
- Four missile launchers are mounted between the main cockpit of the Luggun and its fuselage.
- Bombs
- The Luggun carries an unknown number of bombs in a small bay inside the fuselage.
History[]
The Luggun was developed by the Principality of Zeon as part of their preparation of the Earth invasion of the One Year War. Though used throughout the year U.C. 0079 it would fall out of favor for newer craft that are smaller, faster, and better suited for flight in the atmosphere.
