Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (aka Tamil Tigers), is a militant separatist group of Ceylon in Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

Description & Characteristics

The Tamil Tigers are a real-life militant separatist group in Sri Lanka. They're well-known as a terrorist group, infamous for a series of international crime. They've been known for criminal activities, extortion among Tamil diaspora, involving sea piracy, human smuggling, drug trafficking and gunrunning. In 00 Gundam, they are backed by the HRL to get rid of their long time rivals, the Sinhalese. They have warred for centuries for the control of territory in Sri Lanka and have continued after the HRL occupied their territories and re-named their homeland as Ceylon.

The HRL needed to secure a energy pipeline through Ceylon to distribute power to the other Asian territories, but because of the conflict, the HRL government couldn't successfully build one due to constant rebel attacks. To end this long ethnic conflict, the HRL sided with the Tamil Tigers as they viewed them as the strongest. To this end, the HRL supplied the rebels with Tierens (MSJ-06II-A Tieren Ground Type and MSJ-06II-LC Tieren Long-Range Cannon Type) to fight off the Sinhalese Anfs.

History

Battle of Ceylon

Gundams Exia, Dynames, Kyrios, and Virtue are sent to the old Sri Lanka to intervene between the three-century-old dispute between the Sinhalese and the Tamils (the Tamils being supported by the Human Reform League).

  • Exia and Dynames directly attacked the mobile suits of both factions engaged in battle
  • Kyrios bombarded the Human Reform League's base camp.
  • Virtue sunk a large cruiser.

Aftermath & Impact: The three major powers learned of the Gundam's ability for atmospheric re-entry. Graham Aker of the Union's MSWAD engaged Exia in a Flag and obtained some rudimentary benchmark data on Exia's performance, which leads to his transfer to the Union's "Gundam Investigation Team". Human Reform League confirm that Celestial Being developed their weaponry independently.
