Appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam (Novel), Leroy Gilliam is a member of Char's Newtype Corps. piloting a MS-09R Rick Dom, deemed a rookie he seeks to prove himself. During the Battle of A Baoa Qu he ends up destroying the RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam, resulting in Amuro Ray's death.

As the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon dragged on, Kycilia Zabi sought to create a combat unit made up of Newtypes. Using the research from the Flanagan Institute one of the selected candidates was Leroy Gilliam. Although rather young (and untested) Leroy was brought into the unit following the death of Lalah Sune during a battle in Texas Colony. Deemed a rookie by his superiors Char Aznable and Challia Bull he was eager to prove his worth.
Being assigned a MS-09R Rick Dom he sortied alongside Char and Challia during several skirmishes, however during these he was unable to prove his worth. During the Battle of A Baoa Qu he was orderd to stay back and cover Challia Bull's rear as he attempted to communicate with Amuro Ray. Amuro, who was unable to understand Challia in the chaos killed him, only to then receive his message. Leroy, seeing this, and being unaware that the message had been received flew in to attack the Gundam G-3, although Char attempted to tell him not to do so, he was unable to receive the message before firing at a distracted Amuro. Amuro and the G-3 were swiftly destroyed.
Following the destruction of the Gundam, Leroy was in a sense of shock. Amuro's death trigged his Newtype awakening. As the voices of battle flew into his head, he heard Amuro forgive him. Amuro also told him to not make the same mistakes he did, and that he was still young. Leroy went on to survive the battle and the war, however it is not clear what path he decided to take in life.
