—Lacus Clyne, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom | ||
Lacus Clyne (ラクス・クライン Rakusu Kurain?) is a character introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. She reappeared in the sequel series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny and was the deuteragonist of the theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. A popular female vocalist, she became the co-leader of the Clyne Faction and leader of the Three Ships Alliance during the First Alliance-PLANT War. During the Foundation Conflict, she became the co-pilot of the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam.
Personality & Character[]
At first glance, Lacus appears to be naive and a bit of an airhead, but it is only due to her idealistic and pacifistic nature. Beneath the surface as a pop star and a PLANT idol, she is actually a very deep and philosophical person, as she demonstrates when she delivers speeches throughout the war, mainly about the widening rift between Naturals and Coordinators, the ironies of calling for peace yet doing so with weapons in hand, and the real causes of war as being within the human heart itself. As the leader of the Clyne Faction (and later the Three Ships Alliance), Lacus is very charismatic, strong-willed, and determined to see their fight for peace through to the end. Like her father, Siegel Clyne, Lacus wishes to see a world where Naturals and Coordinators willingly work together and coexist in harmony, disregarding the notion that Coordinators are an evolved species. Being a pacifist, Lacus holds a strong dislike for war, expressing that they are simply started and repeated through a never ending cycle of attack and retaliation.
Skills & Abilities[]
Because Lacus is a Coordinator, her mind and body are enhanced above a normal human's abilities; the full aspects of her abilities are undefined. Lacus' most outstanding talents lie in singing and dancing, as she developed into an influential cultural pop icon in PLANT. She is shown to have a good sense of delegation and command for those that work under her. Lacus also has the ability to enter SEED mode, which enhances her delegation and coordination abilities for commanding the Eternal. While her full abilities during SEED mode are unknown, it's shown that she can easily track numerous amount of targets while inside the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam, and linking her vision to another SEED mode user (in this case, Kira Yamato) as well while using the Disruptor. As an Accord, she also has a limited telepathic ability .
Physical Aspects & Clothing[]
History[]
First Alliance-PLANT War[]
Lacus Clyne was born the daughter of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Clyne. She developed a career as an idol singer which brought her enormous popularity in the PLANTs. She was engaged to Athrun Zala for political reasons. Upon their engagement, Athrun went to their home to hand her a bouquet of roses much to her delight. When the First Alliance-PLANT War started, things changed between them as they are both preoccupied with their agendas during the war they rarely got the chance to meet or speak with one another. Despite that, Lacus always anticipated the day she and Athrun will meet again.
Meeting Kira Yamato[]
When she was dispatched on the civilian space vessel Silverwind to the ruins of Junius Seven for an upcoming memorial service, her vessel was attacked by an Earth Alliance Nelson-class battleship, which was given information by Kenav Luchini to believe that the vessel was actually a military ship. A fight broke out aboard the ship, but not before a life pod carrying Lacus was jettisoned, and departed safely away due to the efforts of Junk Guild tech Lowe Guele in his MBF-P02 Astray Red Frame. Her life pod was subsequently rescued by the Kira Yamato and brought aboard the Archangel.[1]
Even though they are technically enemies, Lacus was kind and respectful towards everybody on board the Archangel, and most of them treated her the same way. (Sai Argyle did question whether the reason she has such a lovely singing voice was due to her genetic alterations.) However, Flay Allster refused to shake hands and scorned her kindness because she was a Coordinator. During her time on the Archangel, Lacus spent a lot of time with Kira and the two started to bond as they saw how kind the other was.[2]
Later, when Flay's father's escort was attacked by ZAFT forces, Flay dragged Lacus to the bridge and said that she would kill Lacus if ZAFT didn't cease their attack at once. Before anyone could react her father dies when his ship, the Montgomery, exploded. Lacus showed compassion towards Flay after her father's death, despite having been threatened by her. As the ZAFT forces continue their assault, Natarle Badgiruel informed them that the Archangel had Lacus on board, thus prompting them to withdraw. When Kira nearly had an emotional breakdown on one of the observation decks due to Flay's abusive words, Lacus comforted him and learned that he shared a friendship with Athrun.[3]
Kira later smuggled Lacus off the Archangel and returned her to Athrun, who once again beseeched him to join ZAFT. As before, Kira turned him down because he wanted to protect his friends on board the Archangel. This saddens Lacus, as she knew that Kira and Athrun are both good people that were forced to fight one another because of this war. As Athrun returned to the Vesalius with Lacus, Rau Le Creuset launched in his ZGMF-515 CGUE to begin an assault on the Archangel. Lacus quickly picked up the intercom and ordered him to stop his aggression at once, due to her being a memorial representative of Junius Seven.[3]
Lacus momentarily stayed on the Vesalius while waiting for the ship to fetch her and return her to PLANTs. She kept on going out of her room and was told to stay there since it was a warship. Athrun then comes over to visit her. She saw Athrun stare at her worriedly and ask him what the matter was. Athrun asks her how she was feeling after being taken as a hostage. Lacus replied that Kira treated her very well, which makes Athrun angry. As he blurted out his disgust about Kira choosing to side with the Earth forces, Lacus tried to comfort him by reaching her hand to his cheek, but Athrun avoided the gesture. He then apologized and bid farewell. Before he left, Lacus pointed out the bitter expression he always had. Athrun replied that he can't exactly fight a war with a big smile on his face and shut the door leaving Lacus stunned.[4]
The next day, Athrun escorted Lacus to the ship. Lacus was disappointed that their meeting was short. Athrun replied that everyone was worried at PLANTs. Before Lacus boarded the ship she told Athrun that she was looking forward to the day they'll meet again.[5]
When Athrun visited Lacus at her home in PLANTs, they discussed Kira and Lacus mentions that she was quite "fond" of Kira, much to Athrun's surprise. The two then spent time walking around the garden talking. Athrun however, was unable to stay for dinner much to Lacus' disappointment since her father was going home and wanted to see him. Athrun reassured her by saying he'll come to visit her again making Lacus' face light up with anticipation and told him she'll look forward to that day. Athrun then leaned forward Lacus (she was surprised at first until she understood the gesture) with her eyes closed. Athrun then kissed her on the cheek and bid her goodbye. As Athrun left, Lacus told Mr. Pink that Athrun was really a busy person.[6]
Second meeting with Kira[]
Later in the war, a wounded Kira was brought to Lacus' home by Clyne family friend Reverend Malchio. Lacus nursed Kira back to health with the help of her father and Malchio. Kira and Lacus became even closer during his stay.[7][8] When Kira was unsure if it was alright for him to be there with them, Lacus assured him that he could stay at her home as long as he wanted.[9] However, when Siegel Clyne received word of Patrick Zala's deception - that the target for Operation Spitbreak was the Earth Alliance headquarters JOSH-A in Alaska, instead of the intended Panama Base - Kira wanted to return to Earth to save his friends aboard the Archangel. In response, Lacus provided Kira with a ZAFT Red uniform and helped him steal the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Before he left, Lacus granted Kira "her strength" by means of a kiss on his cheek, showing him that he has her support and affection.[9]
Lacus provides Kira with the ZGMF-X10A Freedom
Because of her helping Kira, Lacus and her father Siegel were declared traitors. As part of the "Clyne Faction", they tried to inform the people about the genocidal ambitions of Patrick Zala, and Siegel was gunned down by ZAFT soldiers under Patrick Zala's command. While in hiding, Lacus met with Athrun and explained why she helped Kira and that if Athrun kept blindly following the path he was on, she and Kira would ultimately become his enemies. Just then, soldiers of the PLANT radical faction tried to assassinate her, but she and Athrun were saved by members of the Clyne Faction, notably Martin DaCosta.[10]
Three Ships Alliance[]
Near the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War, Lacus and her allies left the PLANTs by stealing the new support ship, the Eternal. The ship made its way to the Mendel colony where it joined the Orb Union-owned Kusanagi and the recently defected Archangel to form the "Three Ships Alliance", a group dedicated to stopping the war. Upon reuniting with Kira again, she told him about the death of her father and wept bitterly in his arms as he comforted her.[11]
After the Battle of Mendel, when Kira discovered his origins as the product of the Ultimate Coordinator Project and began to question his worth of existence, Lacus helped Kira to come to terms with his true origins and worth. She confessed her love to him, telling him that meeting him had made her a happy woman, despite all the sadness she has endured up to that point, and that she wanted him to stay with her. Kira embraces Lacus, accepting her confession.[12] (In the manga, after the battle, the Junk Guild vessel Re.H.O.M.E. joined the Three Ships Alliance as a tender ship, Lacus finally met the man who saved Kira's life (as well as her own), none other than Junk Guild tech, Lowe Guele.)
During the Second Battle of Jachin Due, Lacus give Kira her ring that once belonged to her mother and asked him to come back to her after the fighting had ended. Kira accepted the ring, thanked her for her support, and sealed his promise to return with a kiss on her cheek before leaving for battle.[13] During the battle, Lacus tried to persuade both sides to cease firing the weapons of mass destruction, but failed. After a long philosophical soliloquy about war and death, Lacus entered SEED mode.[14]
Ceasefire Period[]
Following the ceasefire between PLANT and the Earth Alliance, Lacus remained in space with Kira and Waltfeld aboard the Eternal to monitor the PLANTs for the upcoming negotiations. In January of C.E. 72, ships responsible for cleaning up Jachin Due suddenly vanished, prompting Lacus to led the Eternal in investigating the scene. The group soon found a ZAFT terrorist group recovering nuclear missiles from the sunken Doolittle and send out Kira in the MBF-03+P208QX DRAGOON Strike to disable their mobile suits. After Kira defeated the enemy units, Lacus was contacted by their leader, former Jachin Due defense commander, Meia Shiva. Despite Lacus' request for Meia to not repeat the cycle of hatred as Patrick Zala had done, Meia remained adamant and warned the Eternal not to give chase lest she unleash the missiles on the PLANTs.[15]
Forced to delay their pursuit, Lacus and Waltfeld theorized that Meia was more likely bluffing about attacking the PLANTs, and was more concerned with eliminating the new PLANT Supreme Chairwoman Eileen Canaver to disrupt the peace talks. As some nuclear missiles were transported back to Earth, Lacus contacted both Cagalli and Athrun while she and Kira dealt with Shiva in space. While Kira escorted a dummy shuttle as bait for Shiva, Lacus was able to reach Canaver on time before she could depart and warned her of the impending plot. Before Canaver took off on a different shuttle for Earth, she apologized to Lacus for not being as able a negotiator as the late Siegel, but Lacus encouraged Canaver to have faith in herself and her attempt to make peace.[16]
Once Kira returned after Shiva chose to kill herself, Lacus conforted Kira and thanked him for keeping his promise to return to her safely. Afterwards, Lacus and Kira move to Orb on Waltfeld's recommendation and begin living together at Reverend Malchio's Orphanage.[17]
Second Alliance-PLANT War[]
Life in Orb[]
Two years after the end of the war, Lacus and Kira were still living together at Reverend Malchio's orphanage in the Marshall Islands until the fall of Junius Seven forces her, Kira, the Reverend, and the orphanage children to move in with Andrew Waltfeld and Murrue Ramius at their shared mansion in Orb. Meanwhile, PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal, in need of political clout, showcased Meer Campbell as Lacus, using her to influence the populace. The real Lacus was almost killed in an assassination attempt by Coordinators from the ZAFT special forces. Kira was forced to pilot the Freedom again in order to protect the woman he loved.[18] She, along with Murrue, Kira, Andrew, Cagalli Yula Athha, and most of the Archangel's crew reunited hoping to stop the new war.[19] Lacus acted as the CIC officer for the Archangel until Cagalli took over. (Ultimately, Kira's old friend Miriallia Haw would take over this position).
Return to Space[]
Lacus eventually decided that she needed to see what the situation was at the PLANTs, and she and Andrew later hijacked a shuttle (which was meant for Lacus' double, Meer Campbell) to go into space. Despite Kira's worries about not being able to protect her if he didn't come along and her own personal feelings for him, she told Kira that he must remain on Earth to help Cagalli and the Archangel. Kira protected Lacus' shuttle from ZAFT mobile suits during its launch and before the two parted way Lacus promised Kira that she would return to him.[20] Once in space, Lacus and Andrew abandoned the shuttle and made their way to the Terminal factory satellite, where they rejoined the crew of the Eternal.[21]
Returning to Earth[]
When Lacus and the crew of the Eternal were discovered and attacked by ZAFT again (due to an intelligence-gathering error made by Martin DaCosta), she and the ship tried to deliver the newly-built Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice Gundams to Kira and Athrun on Earth. Kira arrived in space via Cagalli's Strike Rouge Ootori (in the original, he instead used the Aile Strike Rouge) and was nearly killed when his mobile suit was severely damaged. Andrew uses his ZGMF-X88S Gaia to provide Kira enough cover to retreat to the Eternal, where his new mobile suit was awaiting. Aboard, Kira and Lacus reunited and shared an emotional embrace and words of happiness at seeing each other again. Lacus then took Kira to his new mobile suit, the Strike Freedom; once again, she wore a worried expression, much like she did when Kira wanted to pilot the Freedom to save her in Orb. But Kira reassured her that everything would be alright and promised to return to her as soon as everything was over.[22] After Kira saved her and the Eternal, she took the Infinite Justice to Orb herself with Kira joining her in the Strike Freedom Gundam. She landed on the Archangel and her words again helped Athrun decide on what he wanted to do concerning the second war.[23]
When Meer interrupted Cagalli's television broadcast following Operation Fury, Lacus subsequently interrupted as well, revealing her presence and the fact that Meer was an impostor.[24][25] Most people were shocked, including the Joule Team and the Minerva crew; even Durandal himself was perplexed that Lacus was in Orb. In her broadcast, she also denounced Chairman Durandal's agenda, but also stated she does not support Lord Djibril either: saying that the war was the responsibility of everyone, for they created this type of world. After the broadcast, the world and the PLANTs argue over who was the real Lacus.
Later, Lacus and Kira revealed to the crew of the Archangel that Durandal intended to assign behavioral genes to every human being in order to render war and conflict obsolete. By doing this, no one could make a decision if their future was planned. Terminal vowed to stop Durandal from implementing his radical "Destiny Plan".
After the sudden attack on PLANT by Lord Djibril's Requiem, Lacus went back to space aboard the Archangel. She joined Athrun, Kira, and Meyrin Hawke on an information-gathering mission on the Moon, where they are contacted by Meer. Even though Athrun and Meyrin thought it was a trap, Lacus chose to meet Meer. Lacus tried to convince Meer to stop working for Durandal; however, they were attacked. Athrun, Kira, and Meyrin dealt with the attackers, but Meer ended up dying in Lacus' arms after taking the shot that was originally meant to kill Lacus.[26] After a funeral on the Archangel, Lacus and the others read Meer's diary and were visibly moved. When Durandal appeared on a television broadcast, Lacus looked at him with an expression that had never been seen on her.[27]
Assault on Requiem: Attack on Requiem Station One and the Battle of Messiah[]
During the final stages of the war, Lacus led Three Ships Alliance and the bulk of the forces that stood in the way between Durandal and the implementation of the Destiny Plan. She once again tried to convince the ZAFT to stand down and reminded them of the principles of humanity. However, believing she was a fake and part of Logos, ZAFT forces continued the attack. During the final battle, she and Kira stayed behind to destroy Messiah, while the rest of the fleet went to destroy Requiem.[28]
Following Kira's return from Messiah, Lacus opened negotiations with ZAFT through the Gondwana to put an end to the battle. The ZAFT forces obliged, and the final battle of the war ended.
Second Post War[]
After the death of Chairman Durandal, Lacus Clyne was invited back to the PLANTs to serve as a mediator between the PLANTs and the other nations. Following the end of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Lacus Clyne became the Chairwoman of the PLANT Supreme Council. Later, when she and Kira (who had joined ZAFT and was wearing a white ZAFT commander uniform) reunited at the PLANTs they immediately ran toward each other and embraced in front of their friends and other officials. (Startling some of the other members of ZAFT).[28][29]
The Foundation Conflict[]
Shortly after helping reorganize the PLANTs' governing structure, Lacus stepped down from her role and was succeeded by Walter de Lament. Lacus and Kira then moved together to a private estate, and began organizing the new world peace monitoring organization Compass. But, their respective work in Compass, with Lacus as its president and Kira its supreme commander, caused the two of them to be separated frequently.[30]
In May of C.E. 75, following an attack on Aldrin by Blue Cosmos remnants that left almost 500 dead, Lacus and Cagalli discuss the recent interest of the Kingdom of Foundation in aiding in Blue Cosmos' destruction in exchange for them joining Compass. As the remnants' leader Michael had hidden himself in Eldore near Foundation's border with the Eurasian Federation, Lacus discussed with Kira Queen Aura Maha Khyber's intentions of assisting them, but was unsure of her true motives. But with no reason to reject, Lacus accepted the offer, and the rest of Compass arrived at Foundation capital, Ishtaria, where she met prime minister Orphee Lam Tao. After a brief handshake, Lacus entered a trance with Orphee but shrugged it off after hearing Kira's voice. After meeting Queen Aura, Lacus remained in Aura's throne room to exchange stories while the rest of her comrades mingled around the royal palace.[30]
At the ball, Lacus interacted with Orphee, who shared his sentiments on trivialities such as Naturals or Coordinators or societal wealth that only served to divide people and cause war. During this conversation, Lacus ended up entering a trance again as Orphee attempted to kiss her, but she was able to snap out of it again when she spotted Kira and excused herself to go after him. As she was bringing some food for Kira on the Millennium, she overheard Agnes Giebenrath berating Kira over Lacus misusing his kindness to send him to fight. Feeling guilty over this perception, Lacus fled back to the Royal Palace's gardens, where she was comforted by Orphee, and Lacus was once again put into a trance and shown a vision of a new future together with Foundation.[30]
On May 17, during the joint Compass-Foundation expedition against Blue Cosmos, Lacus remained behind with the Eurasian Federation and Foundation's leaders on the planning board. Unexpectedly, Kira violated the Eurasian Federation's airspace in his pursuit of Michael and refused to follow Lacus' orders to pull back. Reluctantly, Lacus gave the order for Foundation to subdue Kira and the STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam. To further add confusion, communication with all forces in the field was cut as three nuclear missiles were launched towards Eldore. Although two were destroyed, the last one hit its target and destroyed the city, leaving countless civilians dead. With little alternative, Lacus boarded the Foundation's emergency shuttle and escaped to safety. Believing she had resigned Kira to death, Lacus wept uncontrollably.[30]
Before arriving at the Foundation's Artemis base, Lacus was sedated and transported to a room the Foundation personally arranged for her. Upon her awakening, Lacus quickly entered Queen Aura's command center, demanding to be released back to Compass. Instead, Aura revealed her plan for a future with both Lacus and Orphee leading the next generation forward through the Destiny Plan. Aura revealed to Lacus that she and Lacus' mother had created her as an Accord, a specially designed coordinator, for that purpose. Immediately afterwards, Orphee put Lacus into a trance and attempted to kiss her, but Lacus snapped out of his manipulations after hearing Kira call out her name psychically. Having regained her senses, Lacus rejected Orphee, shouting that he was not the one she loved. When Orphee brought up that she was the one who ordered Kira's demise, Lacus broke down in tears. However, when Orphee asserted that Kira was no longer necessary to the world, Lacus passionately affirmed that she didn't love Kira because he was necessary; he was necessary because she loved him, before being escorted back to her room by Ingrid Tradoll.[30]
When Foundation, now backed by ZAFT National Defense Committee Chair Hari Jagannath's coup, threatened those defying their position with the repaired Requiem, a battle quickly broke out with Compass forces led by Kira, who had survived Eldore, leading a raid into Artemis to rescue Lacus. Upon Kira's arrival at Artemis, Lacus heard him call out to her psychically again. Unwilling to allow Lacus to go free, Ingrid went to Lacus' room and shot the lock with the intention of killing her. Though she didn't hear her say his name, Lacus correctly deduced that Kira was still alive and here to rescue her. Ingrid, however, revealed her personal jealousy of Lacus, being highly valued and loved by Orphee and others. In response, Lacus bluntly asked Ingrid if their only value was from what they could offer, could it truly be considered love.[30]
Immediately after, Kira and his team broke into Lacus' room, and Ingrid quickly drew her knife on Lacus' throat, asking Kira if he'd still love her if she no longer had her voice. To Ingrid's surprise, Kira affirmed that regardless of how she sounded, Lacus would always be Lacus to him, and that he loved everything about her. This distracted Ingrid long enough for Lacus to escape her grasp and reunite with Kira, declaring that she loved him too. Before leaving, Lacus silently apologized to Ingrid, understanding that she was in love with Orphee, before safely escaping with Kira. At the same time as Lacus' escape, counter-revolutionary forces led by Waltfeld would aid de Lament in retaking control of the PLANTs from Jagannath's coup faction. When Jagannath attempted to assert their moral legitimacy, Lacus, transported back to Compass' LHM-BB03S Millennium, reasserted her rejection of the Destiny Plan.[30]
After providing her vocal support, Lacus quickly put on her custom pilot suit and disembarked on the MDE262S Proud Defender to assist Kira. Lacus arrived in time as Kira's badly damaged ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II was quickly recharged upon docking with the Proud Defender, forming the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam. Lacus exited the Proud Defender and joined Kira in the Strike Freedom's cockpit, where she told Kira she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. Continuing the battle against Orphee and Ingrid's NOG-M2D1/E Black Knight Squad Cal-re.A, the Mighty Strike Freedom's nanoparticle barrier protected them from all their ranged and remote weaponry. Lacus followed up Kira's actions by using the Freedom's Multi Lock-on System to fire an electric current that wiped out all of Orphee's missiles and weapon pods simultaneously. Lacus and Kira then jointly authorized use of the Mighty Strike Freedom's Disruptor, which Kira used to slice through the ruins of Messiah and, with help from Lacus' Accord abilities, destroyed all of Ingrid's AMO-01 Ziggurat.[30]
With the tide of battle having now shifted dramatically in their favor, Lacus offered Orphee and Ingrid a chance to end their conflict before further bloodshed. Angered by her rejection, Orphee lashed out at Lacus for choosing someone inferior so that she could enjoy being worshipped, but Lacus replied that no life was superior or inferior to another and that they were all loved equally. When Orphee demanded to know why he did not have anyone to love him, Lacus retorted that someone was looking towards him, and perhaps he could still consider that possibility in the future. Despite Lacus' arguments, Orphee refused to yield, but Lacus and Kira respond that humans were born from love, not necessity, and had the right to choose their own future, before fatally impaling the Cal-re.A, killing Orphee and Ingrid.[30]
With Requiem destroyed and Queen Aura perishing on her flagship, the Battle of Requiem finally concluded. With the conflict over, Kira and Lacus chose to abandon military and political life, and returned together to Earth. Arriving on Akatsuki Island, the two stripped off their pilot suits and shared a kiss together on a beach as the sun set.[30]
Relationships[]
Kira Yamato[]
- Kira and Lacus first met when Kira recovered Lacus’ life pod from the wreckage of her destroyed ship and brought her aboard the Archangel.[1] As the only two Coordinators on a ship full of Naturals, Kira took up the responsibility of looking after Lacus, resulting in the two spending a lot of time together and quickly developing a friendship through their appreciation of each other’s personalities. Lacus admired Kira’s kindness and compassion in how he treated her, and Kira valued Lacus’ sincerity and how she saw him as an individual, instead of just a Coordinator.[2] Later, when Kira was in anguish following a battle against Athrun and an antagonistic confrontation with Flay, Lacus comforted him and listened as he shared his woes with her. During the conversation, the two discovered they shared a mutual friend in Athrun Zala and bonded as they told stories about him. Ultimately, Kira, not wanting Lacus to be used as a hostage by the Earth Alliance, chose to liberate her from the Archangel and returned her to ZAFT through Athrun. During the escape, when getting into her spacesuit, Lacus undressed down to her underwear in front of Kira without embarrassment.[3] Later, in her conversations with Athrun, Lacus mentioned how well Kira treated her, noting his kindness and strength,[4] and openly expressed that she was fond of him.[6]
- After his battle with Athrun on Earth, Kira was taken to the PLANTs for medical treatment and spent his time recovering at Lacus’ home under her care.[7] During his recovery, Kira opened up to Lacus about the battles he fought and the guilt he felt for the lives he had taken. Lacus acknowledged Kira’s feelings and helped him realize that while he did take lives, there were also people who were still alive because of him. During their time together, Kira and Lacus continued to grow closer as they learned more about one another, culminating in the two developing feelings for each other, with Lacus at one point telling Kira that she thought it would be nice if they could remain as they were forever.[8] When Kira expressed doubt about there being a place where he belonged and questioned if it was alright for him to be with her at her home, Lacus told him that as far as she was concerned it was fine for him to be there. After learning that his friends aboard the Archangel were in danger, Kira told Lacus that he would return to Earth to protect them. Anxious and worried about his decision, Lacus asked him why he would want to return to fighting, to which Kira told her that he couldn’t stand by and do nothing, knowing that apathy and inaction would only cause the conflict to escalate. But he would now be fighting not to destroy an enemy but to protect all life as best he could. Inspired by his determination and understanding his reasons for fighting, Lacus helped Kira steal the Freedom Gundam, believing that its power would best serve him. Before Kira departed, he asked Lacus if she would be alright, to which she told him that she would be fighting for peace in her own way. The two then wished each other luck, and Lacus kissed Kira on the cheek and told him that her strength would be with him, conveying that he held her support and affection.[9]
- As a result of her feelings for Kira, Lacus abandoned her relationship with Athrun, and declared to Athrun that she would fight by Kira’s side against him should they be enemies.[10] Following her father’s death, Lacus waited until she was reunited with Kira to mourn, crying on his chest as he held and comforted her.[11] After Kira learned the truth about his origins as the Ultimate Coordinator, he struggled to contain his distress until Lacus told him that he didn’t have to suppress it and comforted him as he released his trauma. Afterward, when Kira began questioning his humanity and right to exist, Lacus opened up to him about her mother, sharing words passed down from her about the inherent meaning of life, and told Kira that as a living being he did have the right to exist. She then confessed that meeting him had made her a happy woman and that she wanted him to stay with her. After hearing this, Kira held Lacus close, accepting the confession and her feelings for him.[12] During the Second Battle of Jachin Due, Kira and Lacus spoke in private and Lacus gave Kira her ring, which once belonged to her mother, and asked him to promise to return to her after the battle had ended. Kira promised to return and kissed Lacus on the cheek before leaving for the battlefield.[13] After the end of the war, Kira and Lacus decided to go into hiding and live a peaceful life.[17]
- Kira and Lacus spent the next two years at Reverend Malchio’s Orphanage helping him care for the children.[31] When assassins were sent to kill Lacus, Kira decided to pilot the Freedom again to protect her. However, Lacus was resistant to Kira fighting, knowing what he had experienced in the last war and not wanting to be the cause of him having to suffer again. Understanding her anxiety, Kira assured Lacus that he would be alright. Holding her in his arms, he told her he would fight to protect her, rather than risk her life for his sake. While sad, Lacus understood Kira’s decision and gave him the keys to the Freedom’s hangar.[18] When Lacus decided to leave the Archangel and return to space, Kira was worried that she would be in danger if he weren’t there to protect her. However, Lacus knew that the Archangel would be vulnerable without Kira to protect it and asked him to remain. Despite each other feeling sad at having to be apart, they knew that for the time being, they both had a job that only they could do and accepted it. Before parting ways, Lacus reassured Kira that she would be safe and promised she would return to him.[20] When Kira found out the Eternal was under attack, he rushed into space in a mobile suit to protect Lacus from danger. Once reunited the two embraced and shared words of happiness at seeing one another again.[22]
- During their mission in Copernicus, Lacus received a message from Meer Campbell asking for help. Despite knowing it was a trap, Lacus wanted to meet Meer face to face, believing it was something that needed to be addressed. Knowing that this was important to Lacus, Kira supported her decision, much to Lacus’ appreciation and the two shared a kiss.[26] After Meer was assassinated, Kira comforted Lacus, holding her as she cried on his shoulder and released her sadness.[27] After the end of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Lacus became the new Chairwoman of the PLANT Supreme Council. Not wanting to be apart, Kira moved to the PLANTs with Lacus and joined ZAFT, becoming a White Uniform Commander. When they saw one another at the PLANTs they immediately ran toward each other and lovingly embraced in front of their friends and other officials.[28]
- Throughout their relationship, Kira and Lacus have provided a great deal of loyalty, trust, understanding, and compassion for each other. The two have had good chemistry and communication since their first meeting, in addition to being mutually attracted to one another. As time went on, both grew to be major sources of support for each other, with Lacus giving Kira a feeling of belonging, and Kira inspiring Lacus to fight for what she believes in. Each has become so significant to the other’s life that they’ve both come to value the other’s safety above their own, being fully willing to risk their lives for the other’s sake. As their relationship developed, Kira and Lacus became more physically affectionate with each other, often standing right next to or even holding one another in complete comfort, without any awkwardness or embarrassment. This affection for each other continued to grow to the point where they became completely comfortable being romantically intimate, even when around others.
Siegel Clyne[]
Athrun Zala[]
- Athrun and Lacus have known each other for some time, as their fathers both worked together as PLANT Supreme Council members. Athrun was the one who gave Lacus her Haro, Mr. Pink. After Lacus told him she enjoyed Mr. Pink's company, he continued to create them resulting in several Haros in Lacus' manor. Their relationship ended when Patrick Zala broke up their engagement. They still shared their friendship though, and high amounts of respect for each other, as well as concern. Athrun was often inspired by Lacus' words and speeches, even snapping out of a depression and returning to battle after defecting from ZAFT the second time.

- Lacus is usually accompanied by a pink Haro (Mr. Pink, Pink-chan), given to her by Athrun Zala, who has a penchant for making small robotic contraptions (such as Kira's Birdy). Over time Athrun made her more Haros in many different colors, but Lacus likes Mr. Pink the most. Mr. Pink usually keeps her company when everyone else is away, and she often talks to it, despite the fact that Mr. Pink has a very limited vocabulary. After the First Alliance-PLANT War, it held the two keys to the Freedom's secret hangar.
In Games[]
Lacus is a Pilot in Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 piloting the Infinite Justice like Athrun. Her story first has the player and Kira aid her in stopping impersonators from using her name. Once the fakes have been defeated, Lacus asks Kira why he did not question if she was a fake as well only for him to reply that she would never attack others indiscriminately. Humorously, her next stage involves her violently attacking other characters to enforce her beliefs in peace, including both Athrun and Kira.
She often shows her worrying about Kira getting hurt and also encourages Kira and Athrun throughout the game. In a collection mission, she is seen piloting a ball and makes references to Haro. Also in some missions, she can appear asking for the player's help to find Haro. If the player finds Haro, Lacus becomes an ally and gives the player an advantage in the current mission.
Lacus is also playable in Gundam Vs. series in Alliance vs ZAFT 2 and SD Gundam Generation Wars/Spirits, unlike in Dynasty Warriors, she does not have a default unit. In both Alliance vs. ZAFT 2 and Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Lacus' piloting statistics are considerably worse compared to other pilots in the game. In the latter, Lacus can be upgraded to have defense on par with Athrun's while her shooting is surprisingly better than Athrun's as well.
In the Extreme Vs. series, Lacus appeared as the pilot of a weaker ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam having a near identical but watered down moveset as Athrun except that she is unable to ride the Fatum-01 or perform his special kick combo but has a Strike Freedom assist. She was later upgraded from the bottom cost to 2000 in XBoost and can now summon Waltfeld's Gaia Gundam or Mu's Akatsuki alongside the Strike Freedom for her assists. Outside, her SEED and SEED Freedom incarnations acts as navigators. Several characters from the Cosmic Era also express pure surprise at Lacus joining the fight herself, and she senses the deep sadness in the hearts of Mafty and Amuro.
Lacus makes her first appearance in the Super Robot Wars franchise with The 3rd Super Robot Wars Alpha -To the ends of the Galaxy- . She appears on board the Eternal alongside Andrew Waltfield. The big difference here is that, unlike the game's other battleships (the Archangel and Martian Successor Nadesico's Nadesico), the Eternal is a selectable unit. Lacus can be switched with Andrew as the captain before launch. This only happens in Judgment, K, and L. With her first appearance and later entries only setting Lacus as the main pilot of the Eternal while Waltfield as Sub pilot. She's also seen possessing a SEED mode. Upon reaching the moral of 130+.
Lacus develops a relationship with Relena Darlian in the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam and Super Robot Wars games. In a ironic twist in her first appearance in Super Robot Wars, Lacus is inspired by Relena actions and views she sees Relena as somewhat a mentor figure. In Super Robot Wars Z2 Saisei-Hen the roles are reverse with Lacus being somewhat mentor to Relena.

Notes & Trivia[]
- Mitsuo Fukuda, the director of Gundam SEED, claimed in a 2003 interview that he drew inspiration from actress Audrey Hepburn for the creation of Lacus' character.[32]
- Three of her songs - Shizukana Yoruni (In the Quiet Night), Mizu no Akashi, and Fields of Hope, can be found in the various Gundam SEED soundtracks and music albums.
- Chantal Strand (who voiced Lacus in the Canadian Ocean Dub) also voiced Feldt Grace from Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
- English voice actress Chantal Strand who voiced Lacus also voiced Kazumi Yoshida from Shakugan no Shana. Lacus and Flay's English voice actresses, Chantal Strand and Tabitha St. Germain, play a similar love triangle relationship role with Kazumi Yoshida and Shana from Shakugan no Shana.
- Chantal Strand also voiced Diamond Tiara in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which is much stranger considering that Maryke Hendrikse voiced Spitfire, Matt Hill voiced Soarin' and Tabitha St. Germain voiced Rarity. Who in turn, those actors portrayed Lunamaria Hawke, Kira Yamato and Flay Allster.
- Kira and Lacus were never shown to have kissed each other on the lips in Gundam SEED. But in the Gundam SEED Character Theater, it was shown that Kira and Lacus kiss each other on the lips. Furthermore, Sunrise released an official image of the couple about to kiss.
- Kira and Lacus have kissed off-screen in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, The Song of Truth at 15:19-15:21. The kiss is audible in the background.
- Kira and Lacus had their first on-screen kiss on the lips during the epilogue of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
- How Lacus' first name is pronounced depending on the two different English dubs; The Ocean Productions dub refers to her name as "Lah-Kus", while the NYAV dub refers to it as "La-kooose". According to Stephanie Sheh, the latter pronunciation is what Sunrise prefers over the previous one.
- Lacus created a remarkable record in the history of Animage's Anime Grand Prix award. She won first place four times in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006 as the best female anime character, plus a couple of times selected as the runner-up. This feat has so far not been matched or surpassed by other any other Gundam characters.
- Despite being one of her most popular roles, Rie Tanaka said at her appearance at the 2008 New York Anime Festival that Lacus is the hardest character she played so far.[33]
- Lacus' exit from her escape pod in episodes 7 and 8 of Gundam SEED is a nod to Lalah Sune's exit from Char's shuttle in episode 34 ("The Glory of Solomon") of Mobile Suit Gundam.
- In an episode of SEED, Lacus draws a Turn A Gundam-like mustache on her dark-blue Haro.
- Lacus is the first-ever female leader of the PLANT Supreme Council. Eileen Canaver was only acting Chairwoman until Gilbert Durandal replaced her as permanent Chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council.
- Lacus makes a cameo appearance as a plush doll in the Sunrise anime Cross Ange: Rondo of Angel and Dragon.
- In Gundam SEED DESTINY Suit CD Vol. 8's Suit Mini-Drama "Secret Strategy", Lacus walks in on Andrew Waltfeld while he was watching a live broadcast of Meer Campbell's concert and expresses interest in it, seemingly forgetting the favor she wanted to ask at first. Andrew then teaches her a few of Meer's dance moves using a few pieces of media he collected for "intelligence-gathering" purposes, later showing what they practiced to Kira. While flattered that Kira prefers her over the impostor, Lacus' actual intention (that Andrew unknowingly fulfilled) was to get info on Meer's mannerisms for a plan she has in mind.
- Though Lacus had been shown activating her SEED factor in both Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom was the first piece of official media to actually depict her activating it. The version seen in the film depicted the first method of activating SEED Mode, resolve to strike down an enemy, suggesting anger towards Orphee during their battle.
- Lacus's "first" depiction of activating her SEED Factor occurred in the Gundam SEED Character Theater although the "SEED" was instead represented by a pink Haro, and this was done when she and Cagalli were charged by a rabid dog.
- Lacus can arouse her SEED Factor in Super Robot Wars series. The game shows her SEED Factor phase animation, unlike in the TV series.
- In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: Alliance vs. Z.A.F.T. II, Lacus's awakening portrait has her activate SEED. Although this trait is not shared in the transition to the Extreme Vs. series, Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. 2 XBoost gives her the ability to activate it separately as her burst attack, functioning identically to Kira and Athrun's SEED activation. In Infinite Boost, Lacus and Kira's burst portrait now shows her activating the SEED Factor.
