Kira-Kira (キラキラ?), is a mysterious phenomenon experienced by Newtypes in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

Overview[]

Kira-Kira is a Japanese onomatopoeia meaning "sparkling" or "twinkling", and true to its name, the people experiencing it see themselves surrounded by sparkles of various colours with a focal shining point, along with hearing a continuous melodic "La-La" sound, frequently being called La-La Song by those who can hear but not see the Kira-Kira.[1]. This is because within the center of the Kira-Kira is a person from a different universe.

The phenomenon is induced by Zeknova, and the multi-colours light seen within it is actually energy emitted from the interactions of Minovsky particles moving from "the other side". Within the Kira-Kira, Newtypes' cognitive abilities reach their peak.[2] While it is unclear how far the phenomenon spreads, Newtypes in close proximity seem to be able to see the others and even converse directly within it,[1][3] while Newtypes within a distance (approximately the other side of a colony) can only hear the La-La Song.[4][3] During Zeknova, the Kira-Kira will also manifest in physical space, and even in mental space the phenomenon is strengthen to allow weaker newtypes to experience it.

Ability to hear the La-La song is enough to indicate someone is a Newtype.

The main colour theme of the Kira-Kira seems to depend on the person experiencing/initiating it:

The appearance of the people within the Kira-Kira is not affected by what they are currently wearing in the physical world. While it is unclear what affects it, one could argue that the impression and viewpoint of the people inside Kira-Kira space affects how their partners appear within that space. For example:

  • Shiiko appears in her casual clothes despite currently wearing her pilot suit in the physical world, Amate also appears in her uniform instead of her pilot suit in episode 4. Both of them have never seen the other in their pilot suits, only casual clothes and uniform, that is probably why they appear to each other within the Kira-Kira in those forms.
  • Both Challia and Xavier appear in their military uniforms despite currently wearing their pilot suits in episode 11. That is the form they most often see the other in.
  • Both Amate and Nyaan appear in their uniforms despite currently wearing their pilot suits in episode 12. Amate has never seen Nyaan in her pilot suit, and Nyaan likely associates Amate with her uniform more.
  • Challia appears in his Captain uniform (his rank in U.C. 0079) despite currently being a Lieutenant Colonel in episode 12. That is probably the form Char remembers him the most.

The first person to encounter the Kira-Kira is Char Aznable during the One Year War. During Operation Solomon Drop, the gMS-α Red Gundam began to act up abnormally with all inside interface lighting up, and soon after, Char found himself surrounding by the sparkling light and hearing the "La-La" sound. At the same time, Kycilia Zabi's Chief of Staff also informed her about some problems concerning the "Rose of Sharon" in their laboratory. The Zeknova incident happened right after. Challia Bull, who also participated in the operation but was away from Char at the time, could hear the La-La sound but unable to see the sparkling light.[4]

UC 0085[]

Various graffiti of the Kira-Kira have been left around Side 6 colonies by Shūji Itō. Amate Yuzuriha and Nyaan also see them on many surfaces around Izuma but only experience the actual phenomenon itself later while piloting the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX.[1][7]

During the Pomeranians vs. CRS Clan Battle, Shiiko Sugai encountered this phenomenon and she, along with Amate and Shūji close by, could see and talk with each other.[3] Challia Bull, Xavier Olivette, and Comoli Harcourt onboard the Sodon currently anchoring in Izuma also could hear the La-La sound while it was happening.

  • Although GQuuuuuuX is the first time such a mysterious phenomenon is given a name, a similar experience by Newtypes with sparkling vibrant color had existed throughout the main continuity, all the way back when Lalah, who was using the Psycommu system of Elmeth, managed to communicate with Amuro in an ethereal environment. While implied to be the same, whether they are truly the same experience is not explcit confirmed by canonical source.
    • The La-La song is identical to the sound Amuro hear whenever Elmeth's psycommu operates in Gundam Episode 39 and Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space, as it is originated from one version of Lalah.
    • The episode that first shown the above ethereal communication is "光る宇宙". Though officially translated as "A Cosmic Glow", it can also be translated as "Shining Cosmo".
  • The aspect of connecting reality generate an inflow/outflow of Minovsky particle between two realities is similar to how quantum portal works in Star Trek, in that conservation of energy will generate dissipation of additional energy from one universe to another, and failure to account for that can create issues in the fabric of reality.
