The Juneau-class is a submarine that appears in the novel Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
An attack submarine developed by the Federation Navy, the Juneau-class was considered state-of-the-art during the One Year War. It was driven by fusion water-jet engines, and possessed monitoring systems that can reconstruct the underwater environment into computer graphics.[1] By U.C. 0096, it was refitted with three docks for amphibious mobile suits, with two in the front and one in the rear.[2]
Armaments[]
- Torpedo Launcher
- The Juneau-class is armed with six forward facing torpedo tubes for use in direct anti-ship or anti-submarine warfare. These weapons are mounted in the bow of the ship, with three on each side.
- Missile Launcher
- The submarine is equipped with eight vertical launch tubes for intercontinental ballistic missiles, providing the vessel with a tactical first strike capability against both land and sea targets. These launch cells are mounted in front of the submarine's conning tower.
History[]
One Year War[]
The Juneau-class was the Federation's latest submarine model during the One Year War.[1] However, after the Principality of Zeon's Second Descent Operation, a total of 32 Juneau-class and Lockwood-class submarines were captured and converted into Jukon-class and Mad Angler-class at California Base.[3]
At the end of May in U.C. 0079, the Federation Navy launched an attack by a medium-sized fleet with the Himalaya-class anti-submarine aircraft carrier Westmoreland as its flagship to retake the Port Moresby base in Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific from the forces of the Principality of Zeon. In this operation to retake the base, the Juneau-class submarines Ananta and Fregat participated. Colonel Bulfheim, captain of the Ananta, used vaporized warhead missiles to mop up the Principality of Zeon forces stationed at the Port Moresby base, but Major Clancy, captain of the Fregat, fired interceptor missiles to prevent the vaporized bomb missiles from landing, because he could not condone Bulfheim's operation from a humanitarian standpoint, since if the warheads landed on Port Moresby, it would not only destroy Zeon but even the city itself. An interceptor missile launched from the Fregat succeeded in shooting down the vaporized bomb missile in the nick of time. The city of Port Moresby was saved, but as a result, the operation to retake the base ended in failure. Incidentally, the Ananta was sunk by an attack from the Principality of Zeon's MSM-03 Gogg shortly after launching the vaporization bomb missiles.
Laplace Incident[]
In U.C. 0096, this 17-year-old submarine was still in service, now fitted with mobile suit hangars. The Juneau-class Bonefish and her crew encountered the AMA-X7 Shamblo while on patrol near the Torrington Base in eastern Australia. It engaged in combat against the Shamblo and its escort which composed of two AMS-129M Zee Zulu mobile suits. The Bonefish attempted to deploy several RAG-79 Aqua GM mobile suits, but was easily destroyed by the Shamblo and its escorts.[4]
