The Jotunheim is a modified transport ship that first appeared in the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War and Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
The Jotunheim is a converted civilian ship that has been transformed by the Principality of Zeon into an experimental support ship. It is lightly armed, with its weapons consisting of a single mega particle cannon and four quad machine guns. It's propelled by five thermonuclear rockets in the aft, as well as twelve smaller rocket thrusters near the front on four thruster pods. Two pods are on either side of the dorsal hull, with each pod mounting a secondary rocket and two tertiary rocket thrusters.
Armaments[]
- Mega Particle Cannon
- The standard weapon of warships, a mega particle cannon fires a focused beam of massive, high-velocity mega-particles, which cannot be deflected by magnetic fields and tears through any conventional armor material. The Jotunheim mounts its single mega particle cannon turret on the dorsal hull, atop a raised platform aft of the bridge, with two of the forward rocket pods on either side.
- Quad Machine Gun
- To supplement the aforementioned mega particle cannon, the Jotunheim carries four quad barreled machine gun turrets for point defense. One is mounted on each side of the bridge, while the remaining two are mounted on a raised platform near the ship's aft. Their caliber and firing rates were powerful enough to destroy RGM-79 GMs - though their position atop the ship limited any protective coverage on the sides and underside of the ship.
Special Equipment & Features[]
- External Fuel Tank
- To extend its range and operating time, the Jotunheim can be fitted with up to three external fuel tanks, equipped between the two carrier hulls. Once all of their propellant is burned, they can be jettisoned to reduce weight.
- Supplementary Rocket Booster
- To enhance the Jotunheim's acceleration, the ship can mount up to four extra rocket boosters on each side of the ship's hull, attached on external circular rails. Each booster is fed by four small propellant tanks. For mobility, these boosters can slide on the circular rails to orient themselves on the top, sides, or underside of the ship - allowing the ship to pull much harder turns in states of emergency. Once all of their propellant is burned, they can be jettisoned to reduce weight.
History[]
The Jotunheim, along with its sister ship, the Muspelheim, are used to test out new mobile suits and weapons produced by the Principality during the One Year War. It would later serve at the fateful battle of A Baoa Qu, where it would deploy an entire force of MP-02A Oggo and see combat alongside the MA-05Ad Big Rang in E-field. It would survive the battle, retreating from the area with whatever survivors they could recover.

Notes & Trivia[]
- It's named after Jötunheimr from Norse Mythology.
- The Jotunheim-class appears to be loosely based on the Earth Federation's Columbus-class transport ships in design.
