“ | Too long has the EFF stolen away the wealth produced by the colony's sweat and labor. For too long we Spacenoids have endured this inhumane treatment and suffered this insults to our honor and pride. But the Principality of Zeon will spread across the Earth! | ” |
—Joshua Stein's morale-boosting speech to the Zeon soldiers after recapturing the Cluj-Napoca base from the EFF.[1] |
Joshua Stein (ジョシュア・シュタイン Joshua Shutain?) was a character featured in ONA Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.[1]
Background[]
Stein was the commander of Stein Battalion,[1] under the command of Zeon's 7th Composite Mobile Brigade during the One Year War. He was tasked to re-capture the EFF's military headquarter in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Personality & Character[]
Stein was a brash and cocky officer who downplays Red Wolf Squadron's contribution in bailing out his beleaguered battalion after re-capturing the EFF base, claiming the credit to himself instead. He was complacent enough to underestimate EFF's ability to mount an ambush against his battalion, with disastrous result.
Stein appeared to be a good orator, as evidenced by his victory speech delivered to the wounded and tired soldiers to boost their morale.[1]
Skills & Abilities[]
Stein's commanding ability is questionable, as evidenced by a lack of thorough preparation and due diligence in checking enemy's true strength before commencing the re-capture operation. As his troop were cut off by the EFF for retreat or regrouping, a panicked Stein urgently called for airborne reinforcement from Red Wolf and Salamanders squadrons, who arrive in time to quell EFF's attack and save Stein's troops from annihilation.[1]
History[]
European Front[]
On November 6, U.C. 0079, Maj. Joshua Stein, the commander of Stein Battalion which was in partnership with several other Zeon army units, commenced the recapture operation of Cluj-Napoca military base at around 3:27pm. As the base was thought to be emptied by the retreating Federal Forces, Maj. Stein ordered the troops to proceed to the destination. Once the Battalion's infantry and tank columns were approaching the intended target, they were ambushed by scores of the EFF's infantrymen and M61A5 MBTs which were hiding nearby. The Federal Forces attacked in front and rear and cut off any escape route for Stein Battalion's infantry and tanks to escape. Maj. Stein's command vehicle hastily retreated from the marching column as he desperately called the partnered Gaw carriers for reinforcement. The Red Wolves and Salamanders MS squadrons duly obliged and parachuted their Zaku II mobile suits to the ground and rescued the beleaguered Battalion from the brink. With assistance from the MS squadrons, the Stein Battalion suppressed the Federal Force's ambush and occupied the base's main building and surrounding facilities soon afterwards. The triumphant Maj. Stein proclaimed victory over the EFF and delivered a celebratory speech to his wounded and tired soldiers at the main building square in the evening.[1]
Stein Battalion's victory at Cluj-Napoca was short-lived, however, as the Federal Forces mounted a surprise raid at the Zeon base in the early morning of November 7, U.C. 0079, which was preluded by the violent explosion caused by the pre-planned timed explosives in the main building. Maj. Stein ordered Red Wolves' Cpt. Iria Solari, the first person who sensed the imminent explosion at midnight, to deploy her squad to counter the EFF attack. Spearheaded by the RX-78(G)E Gundam EX, the Federal Army inflicted tremendous damage to the base and casualties, including the loss of Red Wolf's pilots Reid Ghelfi and Kale Zavaleta, the commanding officer of 1st Armored Infantry Company, plus the annihilation of Armored Battalion and Salamanders Squadron. Solari led the remaining Zeon troops and made an audacious escape from Gundam EX's attacks.[2] With the EFF reclaimed victory at Cluj-Napoca once more, the Stein Battalion's mission ultimately failed and the fate of Maj. Stein remains unknown.
