Izuma Colony is a location introduced and featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. It is the home of Amate Yuzuriha and the Pomeranians clan.

Overview[]

A space colony of Side 6; its design is based on the typical O'Neill Island Three-type cylinder, like most other colonies in the setting of Universal Century. The habitable body is at least 6.4 km in diameter and 32 km long, with three mirror panels slowly rotating to reflect sunlight into the central living area and simulate a 24-hour day-and-night cycle.

History[]

One Year War[]

Side 6 maintained a neutral stance during the One Year War, and as a result, saw comparatively little action compared to other colony groups. Side 6 complied to a status of forces agreement in order to redefine its relationship with the Principality of Zeon, following the occupation period by the latter near the end of the war. While Side 6 was granted basic autonomy, this agreement also clearly stated that air superiority is held over the colony as part of Zeon's controlled airspace, and that Zeon has permission to freely cross over Side 6 territory, given reason.

UC.0085[]

Thanks to its autonomy, Side 6 has its own collective government body that oversees all of the individual colonies that make up the cluster, and this includes Izuma, via its president or governor. However, it is noted by Comoli Harcourt that because of said autonomy, Zeon considers Side 6 as a sovereign nation and has no true obligation to look after their needs. Cameron Bloom and Tamaki Yuzuriha work as employees of Side 6's Inspection Bureau from Izuma Colony.

Five years after the One Year War's end, life in Izuma remains relatively uneventful, until Challia Bull, in the search for his comrade Char Aznable who vanished without a trace after the second battle of Solomon, commands the Pegasus-class assault carrier Sodon to ram right through the colony's spaceport as a show of force, with the intention to negotiate the release of his pilot Xavier Olivette, who was being detained by the colony's military police after an earlier scuffle between Zeon's GQuuuuuuX and the red Gundam, in an attempt of the former to capture the latter, caused confusion, panic, and property damage.

The sudden presence of Sodon in the colony's skies caused quite a stir amongst the public, some of whom likened the One Year War-era vessel to an old war relic.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In an interview held during a milestone celebration of over one million tickets sold for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, Tsurumaki Kazuya and Enokido Yoji stated that the decision to name the space colony "Izuma" was inspired by how Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, which was also set in Side 6 during the One Year War, happened to show several place names to add to the realism of the colony's interior; the visual addition of a railway system in Izuma provided a decent excuse to show off station and district names within the colony.[1]
    • According to Tsurumaki: "We joked about 'Okachimachi Colony', but that would be a little too on-the-nose, too obviously 'close to home', so we tried to split the difference. We wanted them to give off a hint of Japanese while also being fictional enough for a space colony."[1]
  • Enokido had the following to say, regarding the interior aesthetic of Izuma Colony: "When depicting a space colony, it's fun to show things that don't feel 'colony-like'; canals, shrines... I kept suggesting locations that haven't been used much in a colony setting before ... In the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Side 6 is depicted as kind of like a naïve, carefree place even in the midst of war. It's almost a caricature of 'Japan during wartime', so leaning into that Japanese vibe for the colony fits perfectly with Tsurumaki's vision."[1]
