The Integrated Design Bureau is a mobile suit design bureau from the Cosmic Era.
Overview[]
The Integrated Design Bureau was created through the merger of all of PLANT's previously independent military design bureaus, including Heinlein Design Bureau, Clarke Design Bureau, Verne Design Bureau, and Asimov Design Bureau. It served as the primary mobile suit developer for ZAFT.
History[]
The Integrated Design Bureau was formed during the development of the ZGMF-600 GuAIZ, the successor of the ZGMF-1017 GINN, and one of the most advanced mass-produced mobile suits of the First Alliance-PLANT War.[1][2] Afterwards, the Integrated Design Bureau began development of a new series of nuclear powered mobile suits, resulting in the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam, the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, the ZGMF-X11A Regenerate Gundam, the ZGMF-X12A Testament Gundam, and the ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam.[3][4][5]
Prior to the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the Integrated Design Bureau oversaw the development of the New Millennium Series of mobile suits that complied with the restrictions of the Junius Treaty. The end product was the ZAKU Series of mobile suits, comprising the ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior and the commander-use ZGMF-1001 ZAKU Phantom. These machines were designed with a focus on versatility and can be equipped with the Wizard System, a series of optional, interchangeable armament packs, to adapt to various combat situations.[6][7]
Subsequently, the Integrated Design Bureau began development of the Second Stage Series. This series consisted of the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam which was designed to use interchangeable weapon packs known as the Silhouette Packs, while the rest of the line were designed to function effectively in specific environments, while still capable of functioning both on Earth and in space. The ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam was designed for aerial combat, the ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam for space combat, the ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam for amphibious combat, and the ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam for ground combat.[6][7]
After the Second Alliance-PLANT War began, another mobile suit developed by the Integrated Design Bureau was put into production to complement the ZAKU Series, the ZGMF-2000 GOUF Ignited. Development of the GOUF Ignited started at the same time as the ZAKU Series, but it was rejected in favor of the latter. However, due to GOUF Ignited's high performance, development of the mobile suit was allowed to continue and was later put into production for use by commanders and ace pilots.[8][9]
Notes & Trivia[]
- The four predecessors of the Integrated Design Bureau seem to be named after science fiction authors (Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Jules Verne, and Isaac Asimov).
