Iago Haakana (イアゴ・ハーカナ Iago Hākana?) is a character from the Mobile Suit Gundam UC: Phoenix Hunting novel and the Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative film.

Personality & Character

The commander of the Shezarr mobile suit team, he was assigned to the Earth Federation Forces cruiser Damascus as part of the "Phoenix Hunt" taskforce at the request of the Intelligence Bureau. He is suspicious of the details surrounding the mission.

Skills & Abilities

Iago is a skilled pilot and assigned to the high-performance machine, Jesta. He also has good judgement and leadership skills, as shown when he gave the order for the Jestas to scatter as the unit's safety could not be guaranteed.

History

Iago led the Shezarr Unit's RGM-96Xs Jesta (Shezarr Type)‎‎ team in capturing the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex in Side 4. However, even after multiple attempts, the team still could not capture the Phenex. Iago then instructed his snipers to target the Phenex's thrusters to immobilise it, but that failed as well. Not long after, he received a message from an unknown source, ordering him to scatter his team and regroup at designated point Oscar. Initally, Iago demanded the unidentified caller to state their affiliation, but he reluctantly gave the order to scatter after being told that his mobile suit teams' safety cannot be guaranteed if they didn't comply. The Jestas spread out just in time to dodge the High Mega Cannon beam from the RX-9/A Narrative Gundam A-Packs. Later, seeing how the Narrative was struggling to capture the Phenex, Iago instructed the rest of his team to provide help. However, after hearing Rita Bernal's voice from the Phenex, the Narrative's pilot, Jona Basta, decided to fire his High Mega Cannon at the Jestas to allow the Phenex to escape. Once again, Iago ordered his team to scatter, losing the Phenex in the process.

Back at the Damascus, Iago questioned Jona as he found the latter's background to be suspicious. During their argument, Jona dropped his lucky charm, which contains a fragment of the necklace that his father wore. Iago caught sight of it and wondered why he had it. Later, the Shezarr Unit's Jestas participated in a mock battle with the RX-9/B Narrative Gundam B-Packs. During the battle, one of Iago's subordinates noted that Jona's skills as a mobile suit pilot was average, and Iago remarked that it seemed Jona was not enhanced.

The Damascus then travelled to the colony "Metis", where the Phenex was supposedly detected. As the ship stayed outside the colony, the Jestas and Narrative Gundam B-Packs managed to enter it using Luio & Co.'s name. Inside the colony, Iago reminded his team that weapons fire here is forbidden and that they should herd the Phenex to the nearest docking bay when they found it. When one of the Jestas detected something in the sky, Jona rushed ahead and ignored Iago's attempts to call him back. As the Narrative Gundam B-Packs engaged with the MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein, Iago and his subordinates battled several AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Guards Type)s. When the Narrative's NT-D activated and it docked with the NZ-999 II Neo Zeong, Iago tried to get closer to talk some sense into Jona, but was blown away by a mysterious power. He then noted that this power felt similar to the Axis Shock that pushed the asteroid base, Axis, away from Earth several years prior. Jona later calmed down after hearing Rita's voice from the Phenex, and Iago retreated with his team back to the Damascus.

During the final battle at the helium-3 storage base, Iago sortied in his Jesta to help Jona and the Phenex against the II Neo Zeong. He believed that Jona and the Phenex could defeat the enemy, and revealed that he was there when the RX-93 ν Gundam was trying to push back Axis. His unit was then hijacked by the II Neo Zeong, and he ordered Jona to shoot him down, but the latter refused. Iago's Jesta was freed when Michele Luio's Base Jabber exploded and landed on the wire that hijacked his Jesta, he then retreated from the battle. After the battle ended, Iago stood on one of three Jestas' hand as the team arrived to pick up Jona.
