I Can Hear a Song (歌が聞こえる Uta ga Kikoeru?) is the 39th episode of Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

Plot[]

As the Ptolemy 2 crew rejoices over their destruction of the Memento Mori, the ship's e-sensor detects three enemy machines approaching - a GNZ-003 Gadessa, a GNZ-005 Garazzo, and the new mobile armor GNMA-Y0001 Empress. In his base, Ribbons says that it is payback for Memento Mori's destruction.

On Earth, the spokeswoman for the Federation government claims that the explosion in geostationary satellite orbit was an attack by anti-government forces, without mentioning what the Memento Mori is. She then states that in response to the increase in such terrorist attacks, the Federation assembly decided to place the Earth Sphere Federation Forces under the direct control of the A-Laws. In his office, Homer Katagiri watches the announcement with Arthur Goodman, the latter then reports they wiped out most of Katharon's space forces. The former responded that they must defeat Celestial Being to "unite the world and bring about permanent peace", otherwise the paramilitary organization would serve as an inspiration for the anti-government forces and cause them to regain their vigor. He then tasks Goodman to take care of it.

Setsuna in the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser reaches the rendezvous point where he was supposed to meet Ptolemy 2. Instead, he finds scattered wreckage. He then detects the incoming spacecraft, GNW-003/SH Liang and its GN Drive Tau. The unit's pilot is revealed to be Nena Trinity, who then flirts with Setsuna, prompting him to aim the two GN Sword IIs at her. Nena points out that she helped him earlier, and informs him that Ptolemy 2 had fell to Earth. She transmits the combat data over so that he could locate the ship, only for him to rush off to Earth. Purple Haro jokes that "His not into you, his not into you," prompting Nena to pound on the robot.

In the Middle East, Sergei asks his old friend, Pang Hercury, as to why he came to visit. Hercury reveals that someone is planning a coup d'état within the Federation forces in response to the government's policies, and adds that the government now is nothing but the A-Laws' puppet. Sergei soon realizes Hercury is the instigator, who states that the public needs to be enlightened.

In Ptolemy 2, Ian Vashti completed his medical therapy and realizes that the ship had landed on Earth when he notice the gravity. He walks out the door, to find himself in a lush mountain range with a section of the ship blasted open. Ian soon learns about the recent events, including the ambush by the Innovators after the destruction of Memento Mori. Although they were out of GN Particles, Sumeragi Lee Noriega quickly came up with a plan of using the impact force from the enemies' shots to accelerate the ship down to Earth, and deploying a smokescreen to cover their escape. Now, their navigation, weapons control, communications and sensors are all badly damaged. Ian worries if they will be attacked; Marie then comes in with food; Mileina Vashti cheers and this causes her father to snap at her for being too carefree. In the MS hangar, Sumeragi apologizes to Allelujah Haptism for letting Marie get involved in the battle; the latter makes her promise never to do that again.

A little distance from the ship, Lockon Stratos contacts Katharon for resupplying. He hangs up when he hears Anew Returner approaching. She asks him who he was talking to, but he tells her it was some minor business. Lockon thinks Anew suspects him of being a traitor, and so he tells her his real name.

In the Middle East, Setsuna continued his search for the Ptolemy 2. He then happens upon the sight of the Richera Kingdom—or what's left of it, and spots Ali al-Saachez's GNW-20000 Arche Gundam hovering overhead and gives chase.

At the Katharon base near what use to be the Kingdom of Suille, members of the anti-government group learn from Ikeda about the coup d'état and wish to make contact with them. Klaus Grad volunteers to go and meet with the dissidents, though Shirin Bakhtiar thinks that it could be a trap. He states that these dissidents are willing to correct the Federation's wrongdoings. Everyone then hears singing, which Klaus explains is Marina Ismail and the children, having made a song from the children's wishes.

Setsuna/00 Raiser continues to pursue Ali/Arche, trying to shoot him down but the latter keeps evading him. Setsuna wonders where his enemy is leading him and soon finds out: Krugis. Their suits then descend to the ground. Ali climbs out of his cockpit, Setsuna does the same. Setsuna asks Ali about his association with the Innovators and his reason to fight; Ali confirms that he works for the Innovators and says his reason to fight is something that Setsuna won't understand. Setsuna brings up his gun, and Ali states that he brought him here to meet his sponsor. At that moment, Ribbons Almark appears from behind a tower; Setsuna asks if he is an Innovator; Ribbons confirms it and even states Setsuna's true name.

Ribbons reveals that it may seem to him that this is their first meeting, but he in fact, met Setsuna 11 years ago. Setsuna quickly realized that Ribbons was the pilot of the GN-000 0 Gundam that shot all the Anfs and saved him when he was a child. Ribbons explains that he was testing the capabilities of 0 Gundam, and although all witnesses had to eliminated, he spared Setsuna as his look of admiration towards the Gundam left quite a deep impression on him. He also revealed that he had used Veda to recommend Setsuna as a Gundam Meister. Setsuna asked if Ribbons wanted thanks, but Ribbons wanted 00 Raiser, justifying that the suit was meant to be his. Setsuna refuses and tries to shoot Ribbons, only for Ali to be much quicker, shooting him in his right shoulder. Crouching down, he operates the control in 00 Raiser's hand to move back inside the cockpit. Ribbons asks Ali if that was on purpose; Ali states that he lives for battle; Ribbons allows him to toy with Setsuna.

At Ptolemy 2, Lyle arrives at the bridge, reporting that two mobile suits are approaching them from opposite directing. Sumeragi orders Allelujah/GN-007+GNR-101A Archer Arios and Tieria Erde/GN-008 Seravee Gundam to intercept them.

Elsewhere, Ali brutally attacks Setsuna, who is unable to put up much of a fight due to the injury. This distracts Setsuna for Ali to strike him, but he evades.

In Europe, Allelujah engages Revive Revival's Gadessa, determined to stop the enemy unit. Meanwhile, Tieria duels Bring Stabity's Garazzo, but the enemy evades his attacks and slices apart the two GN Bazooka IIs. Bring identifies Tieria as a fellow Innovator and tries to recruit him to their side. However, Tieria refuses and brings out his Gundam's beam saber to block Garazzo's attack. He then counterattacks with the backpack-mounted GN Cannons, but is kicked down to the ground.

As Klaus and Shirin leave for the meeting in a plane, one of the children, Yael asks Marina if they could play their song so that everyone can hear.

Bring states that though he is unhappy with killing a fellow Innovator, he must complete his mission. Tieria also says that there are thing he could not compromise on. Bring thrusts his Garazzo's left GN Beam Claw at Seravee, but the Gundam suddenly dropped its GN Field and allowed its right arm to be severed. Seravee then grapples Garazzo with its other arm and the hidden hands in its knee-mounted GN Cannons. Tieria also activated the Gundam's Trans-Am. Bring wanted to launch another strike, only to witness Seravee's backpack detach and transform into the GN-009 Seraphim Gundam. Tieria declares that unlike the GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh, he is now revealing the Seraphim of his free own will. As Tieria moves to attack with Seraphim, Bring activates his Garazzo's GN Field, only for Seraphim to push right through it. Bring says Tieria is destroying his own kind, but Tieria corrects him that he is a human being. He then turns Seraphim's arms into GN Cannons and fires at Bring/Garazzo. Revive is momentarily distracted and cries for Bring to run, this enabled Allelujah to take out his GN Mega Launcher. However, it was too late, the Garazzo was destroyed, killing Bring.

Ali finds Setsuna to be too aggressive and notices the plane Klaus and Shirin are on. Ali flies his Arche to the plane, thinking that it is the perfect bargaining chip, and tries to threaten Setsuna with it. However, he didn't anticipate 00 Raiser's quantization abilities, and was surprised when the Gundam knocked him away from the plane. Ali unleashes his GN Fangs, only for them to be destroyed by a powerful particle blast. Setsuna then slice off Arche's right forearm and stabs its right thigh. But before he could deliver the final blow, he stops upon hearing Marina calling his name and her and the children singing. Arche then explodes due to accumulated damages, but Ali manages to escape in the Core Fighter. Because of the effects of the Twin Drives on Trans-Am, Klaus, Shirin and the base can hear the singing. One of the Katharon guerrillas oon a Tieren pull out a picture of him and his family.

In space, Louise Halevy sees an unknown mobile armor attached to the underbelly of an A-Laws carrier group's lead ship. An Innovator with similar features to Bring, Divine Nova, introduces it as the Empress. He says that she'll be receiving a machine based on it, courtesy of Ribbons Almark.

On Earth, Billy Katagiri showed Mr. Bushido his new, customized suit, the GNX-U02X Masurao. He explains to Mr. Bushido that he had also installed a "secret bonus" in it based on notes from the late Professor Ralph Eifman's handwritten notes on the GN Drive in his home. As Bushido goes to test his new machine, Billy tears up a picture of him and Leesa Kujo from back in university, throwing it into the air, saying, "Goodbye, Kujo."
