Haunted Forest is the first episode of Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance [1].
Synopsis[]
The Red Wolf Squadron joins the battle on the European front to reclaim Cluj-Napoca. Later, Captain Iria Solari notices something amiss [1].
Plot[]
On November 6, U.C. 0079, the Stein Battalion under Major Joshua Stein advances in column to capture the Federation base in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. They are ambushed by the Earth Federation Ground Forces. The major orders the column to withdraw, facilitating the EFGF encirclement of the Zeon column.
Maj. Stein calls for backup from the overwatch task force Sentinel Two, which drops two mobile suit squadrons: the Red Wolves and the Salamanders. The mobile suits take fire from anti-aircraft batteries, which are destroyed by a Dopp, and from a flight of FF-S3 Saberfishs, which were shot down. The mobile suit reinforcements allow the Federation forces to be defeated, and the Zeon forces take Cluj-Napoca Base.
Dr Ony Kasuga of UMRC is introduced performing first aid at the base on Second Lieutenant Ander Heaton of the Armored Battalion, who marvels at the MS-06F Zaku II F Type standing over them. Ony says he is familiar with the Zaku's handiwork. Heaton says of the Zakus, "They saved my life today, and they've saved more lives than you can imagine."
The Red Wolves debark from their mobile suits and are greeted and thanked by Maj. Stein. At sunset, Stein addresses his troops, interrupted by his troops' cheers for the Red Wolves.
For now, we rest, but reinforcements will arrive in the days to come. Once they're here, we will put an end to Earth Federation operations in this sector. Too long has the EFF stolen away the wealth produced by the colony's sweat and labor. For too long, we Spacenoids have endured this inhumane treatment and suffered these insults to our honor and pride. But the Principality of Zeon will spread across the Earth!
That evening, as the Red Wolves banter over why they fight — for the paycheck, for freedom, for Kentucky bourbon — Iria Solari is bothered by a bad feeling from the woods. Chubs claims the forest near the base is haunted. The Red Wolves go to bed, while Iria wanders the captured base. She receives a presentiment of doom, shouting "Take cover!" moments before a grandfather clock in the base commander's office advances to midnight, and bombs hidden across the base explode.
Federation forces enter the base, and Solari feels another warning, moments before the RX-78(G)E Gundam EX enters the base. The Red Wolves split: Kale and LeSean's units to attack the E.F.F.'s Type 61 tanks, while Solari and Chubs head towards the Gundam.
The Gundam's beam rifle shot destroys the cockpit of Chub's Unit, killing him instantly. The beam overpenetrates, piercing the base's main building and carrying on to the woods behind, leaving flaming holes in its passage. Kale's unit tries to snipe the Gundam, but the round impacts the Gundam's shield. The Gundam tackles the sniper, punches its cockpit, and kills Kale. LeSean's unit charges with a Heat Hawk, but the Gundam's beam saber relieves the Zaku of its hands before slicing the unit in half. The Gundam then charges at Solari's Zaku, but is distracted by cannon fire from two Zaku Tanks, and it slices them in halves. Solari's Zaku attacks the Gundam with 280mm Zaku Bazooka, and the shot has no effect on Gundam and it charges towards her Zaku and destroy the Zaku's head with its Shoulder Gatling Cannon before slicing off the legs and cutting a hole in the cockpit hatch. As her Zaku lies disabled, Solari reaches for the pocket watch hanging from her dashboard, and the Gundam ignites its beam saber.
