Disambiguation:

The Heavy-Lift Launch Vehicle (大重量離昇機 Dai Jūryō Rishō-ki?),[1][2][3] also known as Heavy Lift Vehicle or simply HLV,[4][1] is a Principality of Zeon's Earth-Space transport vehicle first introduced in OVA Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory,[5] with subsequent appearances in MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War,[6] MS IGLOO 2: The Gravity Front,[7] and ONA Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.[8]

Technology

A reusable single-stage-to-orbit vehicle with vertical take-off and landing capabilities, the HLV was designed with with large payload space to transport cargo between Earth and Space, which was capable of transporting six mobile suits or sixty personnel, plus ten combat vehicles and a large amount of supplies at once.[2] Its streamlined conical shape allowed it to survive atmospheric re-entry. When being fitted with rocket boosters, the HLV stands at 101m[9] and could be launched back into space. Once the boosters were disposed, the HLV should be docked with receiving warship or spacecraft as soon as possible or it would be at risk of being stranded in Space and subjected to EFSF's attacks.[6]

Special Equipment & Features

  • Boosters
For Earth Landing operation, the HLV was equipped with six tear-shaped auxiliary boosters on its three sides to provide power and movement control for space maneuvers. The boosters were then detached and disposed of once the HLV arrived at the Earth outer orbit for atmospheric re-entry;[7] For launching back to Space, the HLV was installed with a main rocket booster at its base, which was complemented by three sets of twin boosters plus the aforementioned auxiliary boosters to provide ample thrust to the HLV for breaking through the atmosphere. They were then detached and disposed of once the HLV enters Earth's outer orbit.[10][8]

History

The HLVs appeared for the first time during Zeon's First Landing Operation on March 1, U.C. 0079, when they descended en masse onto Central Asia in large numbers to commence the Earth Invasion campaign.[7] Subsequently more HLVs were deployed in the Second and Third Landing Operations to deliver Zeon troops and equipment to Earth.[7] These vessels were used by the Principality of Zeon to land forces on Earth, to launch extracted mineral resources into space, and finally to evacuate fleeing troops following Zeon's defeat during Operation Odessa.[6][8]

On January 2, UC 0080, fierce fighting occurred at Hughenden, Australia as the EFF's White Dingo MS team attempted to stop the launch of an HLV by the retreating Zeon Australian Army, which was reported to contain a sample of Astaroth, a biological weapon which could cause havoc to Earth's ecosystem.[11]

On October 23, UC 0083, Zeon Remnants' Kimbareid Forces in East Africa used its lone HLV to transport Maj. Anavel Gato of the Delaz Fleet and the stolen RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis" into Space during Operation Stardust.[5]

Notes & Trivia

  • An HLV is actually a real-world term that stands for Heavy Lift Vehicle or Vessel.
  • There exists conflicting accounts on HLV's dimensions. The original design from Gundam 0083 OVA has the booster-equipped HLV listed with overall height at 101m,[9] whereas Takuya Suzuki, environment and modelling supervisor of Requiem for Vengeance ONA's co-producer SAFEHOUSE, states that the HLV with boosters stands at 200m[12] which is almost twice the size of the 0083 original. Such variation may be attributed to different vehicles based on the same concept.
