The Gundam Wiki

This is the policy for uploading images on Gundam Wiki.

What Should & Shouldn't be Uploaded

  1. Vandalism/Spam images will be deleted.
  2. Always check that the image already exists on the Wiki. Never overwrite images unless the newer one is of higher resolution/quality.
  3. Uploading of GIF animations is discouraged.
  4. Images watermarked by unofficial sources are actively discouraged, and will likely be deleted.
  5. Use of raw video screenshots is encouraged. If subtitles are necessary for the purpose of the image, official subtitles are preferred over fansubs.
  6. Manga scans must either be raw or use the official translation. Do not upload a fan scanlation unless you are a member of the scanlator group.

Quality

  1. High quality images are preferred. If duplicate images exist, the lower quality image will be deleted. The limit on Fandom for file sizes is 10MB.
  2. A low quality image should be tagged with the Poor quality template until it is replaced with one of higher quality.

Fan Art

  1. Uploading of fan-created designs, characters, parody images, and Dōjinshi on the main namespace is prohibited.
  2. Doctored images of official Mecha line art (e.g. altered sizes, color swaps, extra weapons) by fan artists are not allowed. The exception to this policy is when cropping text or removing backgrounds of official line art via image manipulation. Uploading of fan-created images must require permission from the artist. If the image is self-created, you can; copyright the image, publish it under the Creative Commons license, or release it into the public domain.
  3. Fan-created images that imitate official Mecha Designs (e.g. CG renders) are allowed provided that permission is obtained from the original maker, (and as long as it does not violate (2)). The Copyrighted template should be added to the image. If added to a gallery, a proper description should be added. These types of images cannot replace official line art/artwork and cannot represent the article or the content described in the article.
  4. Fan-created images that partially use copyrighted material such as custom backgrounds must be tagged using the Fair use rationale template. As stated above, uploading of fan art or fan-created images must require permission from the artist.
  5. To avoid confusion, fan-created art depicting an official model kit's original features should not be uploaded; an image of the actual model kit should represent the gimmick.
  6. Fan art illustrating symbols (e.g. emblems, flags) that appear in official anime or manga series are allowed.
  7. Copyrighted material from other franchises such as unrelated anime series and video games do not have Fair use rationale. They will be deleted.

Describing Images

If you are uploading an image that you know is high resolution and comes from an approved source, you must still let others know what it is of and where it is from. There are multiple ways to do this; naming, categorising etc. the ideal image should use as many of these ways of describing images as possible, if you do not describe images at all, there will be consequences, if you describe images in at least one way, there will not be any penalties.

All of this can be done using Special:Upload, we highly recommend that you use this tool over all other methods of uploading images.

If you choose to use other methods, please open the image's page then manually add the appropriate templates/categories and move it if it has a poor filename.

State Sources for Images

It is important to state the sources for any images on uploads because images need to be trustworthy; we need to know that the images come from verifiable and official sources e.g. images of book scans should have an ISBN or magazine identifier, images from the web should have original URLs (that is, the URL of where an official source uses the image).

This is done using two templates; Template:File Information and any of the templates listed on MediaWiki:Licenses

For example, a television anime screenshot such as File:Sarah Dark Sarah GBD e17 17m37s.png has Template:File Information with the description parameter to describe who is in the image and what events or actions are being done, in this case "Sarah meets Mirror Sarah". The source parameter mentions:

Then, because it is a television screenshot, we use the Fair use template with tv-screenshot as the parameter:

{{Fair use|tv-screenshot}}

Properly Name Images

Images are here to be used; images must be searchable on the Wiki in order for them to be used. Good filenames must also be briefly descriptive of their contents and source:

  • Movie/single-installment screenshots/scans: All entities in the image, the work's abbreviated title, the timestamp.
  • Series screenshots: All entities in the image, the series' abbreviated title, the episode number, the timestamp.
  • Manga scans: All entities in the image, the manga's abbreviated title, the chapter number, the page number.
  • Other book scans (including gunpla manual and magazines): All entities in the image, book's title (optionally abbreviated) and the page number.
  • Artwork: All entities in the image and an optional brief description of actions or events (including poses).
  • Product shots: All entities in the image, optional brief description of actions or events (including poses), the kind of product (e.g. Gunpla, Gundam Fix Figuration).

e.g. File:Bright Noa Tem Ray Amuro Ray MSGTO ch001 p23.jpg mentions every character appearing in the scan, the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga (abbreviated as MSGTO), the chapter number and the page number.

If you spot an image that does not have a good filename, please edit its page and add Template:Poor filename to it.

Properly Categorize Images

Another way images can be found on the Wiki is by browsing categories.

File:Bright Noa Tem Ray Amuro Ray MSGTO ch001 p23.jpg also has all the names of all characters appearing in it as categories (categories must be identical to the article names). Instead of a series-number combination to state the chapter, it simply has the name of the chapter as a category.

Violating the Image Policy

To administrators, this section details what should be done for violators of the image policy.

Counts apply to the violators, actions apply to the image. All violations will be dealt with but not all violators will receive penalties.

Violation Action Count Notes
Vandalism/spam Delete the image. +6 Instant ban
Fanart Delete the image. +1
Low resolution Overwrite with higher resolution image. +1
GIF Delete the image. +1 Cannot be overwritten.
Poor filename Move the image.
  • +0 if poorly categorized.
  • +1 if appropriately categorized.
Poorly categorized
  • Remove any inappropriate categories.
  • Add appropriate categories.
  • +0 if has good filename.
  • +1 if has poor filename.

Consequences

Counts are reset each month.

Count Consequence
0 Nothing.
1 to 5 User is warned but not banned.
6 or higher User is banned. The details of the ban should be explained on their message wall.

The length of a ban is as follows:

Examples

  • A user uploaded a spam image: Delete the image, then ban them. Finally, post a message on their wall explaining why.
  • A user uploaded fanart: Delete the image. Post a warning on their message wall, and increase their violation count for the month.
  • A user uploaded a low resolution image: Upload a higher resolution version if possible. Post a warning on their message wall, and increase their violation count for the month.
  • A user uploaded a screenshot and didn't state the episode anywhere: Rename the image. Post a warning on their message wall, and increase their violation count for the month.
  • A user uploaded a screenshot with a good filename but didn't add categories: Add the categories, do not give the user a warning or increase their violation count.
  • A user uploaded a screenshot with a bad filename but added the episode title as a category: Rename the file, do not give the user a warning or increase their violation count.

Using Images

Screenshots & Scans

These images depict events in Gundam media, what they should be used for is to accompany text describing the same events. These texts can be found in the Plot sections of articles for Episodes, Chapters and single-installment works. These texts are also found the History/Chronology sections of articles for fictional entities (Characters, Mechanics, Factions, Locations, Technologies and Conflicts).

So, beyond the introductory paragraphs of infoboxes, screenshots/scans belong in sections titled "Plot", "History" or "Background" or "Chronology".

Please try to use no more than one "image region" per paragraph, this can be either a single individual image:

[[File:Character Series e01 02m20s.png]]

Or it can be a slideshow which only shows one image at once:

Gallery Sections

Gallery sections are capped at 8 rows for media and 5 rows for entities.

When gallery sections get too big, the first step is to separate the different images into tabs.

<!-- Media Article Example -->
<tabber>
Key Visuals=
<gallery hideaddbutton="true">

key visual 03.png

</tabber>

If they are still too big, the gallery section must be turned into a gallery subpage. The remaining section is left as a preview for the subpage.
