| “ | Mu: " Oh, which reminds me... why does Kira often refer to that thing as Gundam?" Murdoch: "Oh, it appears on the activation screen. General Unilateral Neuro-link... and so on. Take the first letter of each word, and that's what you get. The military refers to it only as 'G'." |

Gundam is a term introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview[]
The term Gundam refers to mobile suits that require powerful mobile suit operation system (M.O.S) to function. The Gundam acronyms refer to the name of the OS on their respective mobile suits. The acronyms are as follows:
- "General Unilateral Neuro-link Dispersive Autonomic Maneuver synthesis system" is Morgenröte's designation for the OS mounted on the "Project G" MS. This included the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, GAT-X103 Buster Gundam, and GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam, MBF-02 Strike Rouge, and the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam.
- "Generation Unsubdued Nuclear Drive Assault Module complex" is the term used by ZAFT to refer to the Gundams they designed using the technology acquired from the stolen Morgenröte machines. The machines using this OS are the YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam, ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam, ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, ZGMF-X11A Regenerate Gundam, ZGMF-X12A Testament Gundam and the ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam. This OS is also used by some of the successors of the Freedom and Justice: ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam, ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam, ZGMF-X191M2 Infinite Justice Gundam Type II, and the ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II.
- "Generation Unrestricted Network Drive Assault Module" was the designation for most of ZAFT's Second Stage Series of Gundams including the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam, ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam, ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam, ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam and the ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam. It was also used for the ZGMF-56E2 Impulse Gundam Spec II, an upgraded version of the Impulse.
- "Gigantic Unilateral Numerous Dominating AMmunition" is an acronym unique to the Earth Alliance's GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam.
- "Gunnery United Nuclear-Dueterion Advanced Maneuver System" was the term used by ZAFT for the ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam and ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam. This term was also used for the ZGMF/A-42S2 Destiny Gundam Spec II, an upgraded version of the Destiny.
- Guider UNmanned Deployment Autonomic Manipulation" is an acronym for the Deep Space Survey and Development Organization's GSX-401FW Stargazer Gundam.
History[]
The term Gundam was coined by Kira Yamato to GAT-X105 Strike Gundam when he read the acronym of the M.O.S., General Unilateral Neuro-link Dispersive Autonomic Maneuver system, or the G.U.N.D.A.M. acronym in and of itself. The crew of the Archangel then slowly caught on to the term and subsequent prototype mobile suits from all major factions have hence been referred to as Gundams. However, the official name for Gundams is "G-Weapon".
