Gryps 2 (グリプス2?) is a weapon of mass destruction introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
Technical Overview[]
A colony laser built by the Titans in U.C. 0087. It is called "Gryps 2" because one of the two cylinders of "Green Noa 2," a two-banchi colony on Side 7, which was a strategic development base of the Titans, was used to construct the massive weapon. Compared to the Solar Ray colony laser constructed by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War, Gryps 2's energy charging system was greatly improved, and had a significantly shorter charging time, which was a drawback of the Solar Ray. It also had a nuclear pulse engine, which enabled it to move to any launch point.
History[]
Gryps War[]
During the Gryps War, the Republic of Zeon sided with the Titans and loaned them their asteroid fortress A Baoa Qu, which the Titans moved to Luna II. A Baoa Qu became the Gate of Zedan, the Titans' new headquarters, while their former base of operations, the space colony Gryps, was split in half, with one part transformed into a new colony laser. Following the First Battle of Dakar, the Gryps 2 colony laser was completed. On December 7, during a mission by the AEUG to investigate the superweapon, Gryps 2 fired on Colony 18 of Side 2, heavily damaging the colony as well as killing its inhabitants.[1]
When the Titans intended to use Gryps 2 to destroy Granada, the AEUG's headquarters, the sponsors of the AEUG decided to make a deal with Haman Karn, leader of Axis Zeon. They promised her Side 3 if she destroyed the colony laser and Haman agreed. During the Attack on Gryps 2, Haman ordered her flagship, the Gwadan, to fire on Gryps 2, disabling the superweapon, but leaving it intact.[2] Following the Destruction of the Gate of Zedan on January 18, U.C. 0088, Axis Zeon seized Gryps 2 from the Titans.
On February 2, U.C. 0088, with the colony laser now in the hands of Axis and the asteroid fortress itself on a collision course with Granada, the AEUG began Operation Maelstrom to capture the colony laser from the Zeon force.[3] They succeeded and were able to use it to prevent the giant asteroid from crashing into the lunar city. Over two weeks later on February 20, the forces of the AEUG, the remaining Titans under control of Paptimus Scirocco, and the forces of Axis Zeon met in a three-way battle around the colony laser. Two days later, on the final day of the war, Bright Noa had Gryps 2 fire on the remaining Titans ships within range of the colony laser, critically damaging their fleet. The conflict ended in favor of the AEUG, however, during the battle, Gryps 2 was heavily damaged and ceased functioning.[4]
Laplace Incident[]
Repairs on Gryps 2 were completed in secret during the conspiracy surrounding "Laplace's Box". Martha Vist Carbine, who embraced the Federation Forces to protect the interests of the Vist Foundation, used it as a final means to prevent the disclosure of Laplace's Box, in order to make the box and its location disappear. Unlike during the Gryps conflict, the colony laser is now controlled remotely from the "Caucasus Forest," a control room secretly set up at the Cheyenne Air Defense Command Base in North America. While the colony laser obliterated several of the Sleeves' ships in its line of fire, the laser was blocked by the three-layered psycho-field generated by Banagher Links' Unicorn Gundam and Riddhe Marcenas' Banshee, and Martha was taken into custody by Bright Noa, who was present when the operation failed.[5]
Space Warring States Era[]
The Earth Federation Forces asked Uncle King to repair the abandoned Gryps 2 in secret. When the local residents learned of this, they rioted, resulting in Uncle King's death. Later, the Land of Hymns, founded on Side 7, converted an open colony into a colony laser. By closing the mirror, the laser could be fired, and was used in the decisive battle on Side 1.
