The Grimaldi Front is a series of conflicts during the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in the video game Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Never Ending Tomorrow.
Prelude[]
Following their victories during Operation Uroboros and at the Battle of Jachin Due, ZAFT sought to remove the Earth Alliance from space entirely. To achieve this, they began the secret construction of a lunar base at the Lorentz crater on the far side of the Moon. Lorentz Base was to serve as ZAFT’s beachhead during their campaign to capture the Alliance's Ptolemaeus Lunar Base.[1]
The Battles[]
On May 3rd, C.E. 70, ZAFT launched an offensive on Luna and the moon was soon divided into ZAFT and Alliance territory, with the boundary between the two marked by the Grimaldi Crater, and the lunar frontline was thus known as the Grimaldi Front. The Earth Alliance and ZAFT fought against each other in major battles and several skirmishes for weeks, with no true victor emerging from the conflict.[1]
Battle of Endymion Crater[]
On June 2nd, C.E. 70, the Earth Alliance and ZAFT engaged in a battle over the Alliance's supply base at the Endymion Crater. The base was defended by the 3rd Space Fleet, which dispatched its elite Moebius Zero Corps to engage ZAFT forces. However, the 3rd fleet was ultimately destroyed in battle, along with all but one member of the Moebius Zero Squadron. However, refusing to allow ZAFT to claim the base or the Moon, OMNI Enforcer personnel overloaded the Cyclops System underneath the Endymion Base, destroying the base as well as most of the remaining EA forces and ZAFT's Lunar Expeditionary Fleet.[2]
Aftermath[]
After the Battle of Endymion Crater, ZAFT forces sustained severe losses and were forced to abandon the Grimaldi Front and withdraw from the moon. With ZAFT's retreat, the Moon was firmly placed in the Earth Alliance's possession. Both sides sought to salvage individual tales of heroism from their losses in the Campaign. Mu La Flaga, the only survivor of the 3rd Fleet's Moebius Zero Corps, was acclaimed as the "Hawk of Endymion" for shooting down five GINN mobile suits. Rau Le Creuset of ZAFT, then commander of the Laurasia-class frigate Galvani, was rewarded for his accomplishments by being placed in command of the then in construction Nazca-class destroyer Vesalius.[2]
In C.E. 71, ZAFT launched multiple attacks on EA mass drivers on Earth in an attempt to weaken the base by starving it of resources.[3] Despite the initial success of the strategy, the EA later reclaimed its mass driver at Victoria Base and re-establish its supply line.[4] Ptolemaeus remained as the Alliance's space headquarters for the remainder of the war, until it was destroyed by ZAFT's superweapon GENESIS during the Second Battle of Jachin Due.[5]
