The Granada Treaty was a peace treaty that formally ended the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. It was signed at the city of Granada on the Moon by representatives of the Federation and Prime Minister Darcia Bakharo of the Principality.
Terms[]
- The Principality of Zeon ceases all hostilities with the Earth Federation and withdraws all of its military forces from Earth, the Moon, and all other territories it had occupied during the war.
- All Zeon military forces must disarm before returning home.
- Zeon is permitted to retain possession of A Baoa Qu, but Solomon and Pezun are permanently relinquished to the Earth Federation. Zeon is prohibited from constructing any new asteroid facilities for military purposes.
- The Earth Federation gains control of Zeon's main mobile weapon manufacturing corporations: MIP, Zeonic, and Zimmad.
- Further dispersal of Minovsky particles in space is prohibited among all signatories.
- Zeon shall officially rejoin the Earth Federation on January 1, U.C. 0100.
History[]
Prelude[]
On December 30, U.C. 0079, Sovereign Degwin Sodo Zabi of the Principality of Zeon attempted to meet with General Johann Abraham Revil of the Earth Federation to negotiate peace before the Federation commenced its attack on A Baoa Qu, the last line of defense for the Zeon homeland of Side 3. Before talks could begin, however, Zeon Supreme Commander Gihren Zabi ordered the firing of the Solar Ray at the Federation's fleet. Both Degwin and Revil perished in the blast.
In accordance with Zeon's line of succession, Prime Minister Darcia Bakharo was temporarily elevated to Sovereign of the Principality, since Gihren and Rear Admiral Kycilia Zabi were both away from Zum City while they commanded A Baoa Qu. Sharing Degwin's desire to end the One Year War, Bakharo took the opportunity to contact the Federation and propose peace talks at Granada. The Federation assented and arranged for the Thoroughbred to escort the Chivvay-class cruiser transporting Bakharo, as it was deemed highly likely that the Zeon forces occupying Granada would attempt to prevent Zeon's surrender by destroying the Prime Minister's ship.[1]
This assumption proved correct, but the fighting was short-lived. The date was January 1, U.C. 0080, and in the middle of the battle above Granada, word reached the commander of Zeon's Granada forces, Major General Nord Wrangell, that A Baoa Qu had fallen, and Gihren and Kycilia had both died. At that point, Wrangell judged that Zeon's position in the war had become untenable and any further fighting was pointless. He issued a ceasefire, allowing Bakharo to land in Granada and commence the peace talks.[1]
Ratification[]
“ | Attention, all Zeon officers and soldiers. I am Prime Minister Darcia Bakharo. Supreme Commander Gihren Zabi, along with Rear Admiral Kycilia Zabi, have lost their lives in battle. Therefore, A Baoa Qu has surrendered. At present, the Republic of Zeon and the Earth Federation government have agreed to a ceasefire. Our battle has come to an end. I beseech you, officers and soldiers, as the national sovereign I have proper authority to give the order. All forces, immediately suspend hostilities and lay down your weapons. I repeat, immediately suspend hostilities and down your weapons. The war is over. | ” |
—Prime Minister Darcia Bakharo's ceasefire order to Zeon forces[2] |
On January 1, U.C. 0080, at 1500 hours, an armistice went into effect across the Earth Sphere, and all Zeon military forces were ordered to stand down. The Granada Treaty was ratified by the Principality and the Federation later that day, officially concluding the One Year War. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Bakharo's allies in the Principality of Zeon Assembly swiftly enacted the Principality's reorganization back into Republic of Zeon before Zabi family loyalists could seize the reins and break the peace.
Legacy[]
Although the Granada Treaty brought an end to the most destructive war in human history and allowed the Republic of Zeon to temporarily keep its sovereignty, true peace between Earthnoids and Spacenoids proved elusive. Numerous Zeon Remnants refused to acknowledge the treaty, and the next two decades would see a multitude of major and minor conflicts involving Zeon insurgents and Neo Zeon Movements, none of which succeeded in toppling the Federation or gaining increased autonomy for Spacenoids.
The treaty also indirectly transformed Anaheim Electronics into a weapons manufacturing juggernaut. The Earth Federation acquired Zeon's leading mobile weapons manufacturers, MIP, Zeonic, and Zimmad, to ensure Side 3 could not rebuild its military. The three corporations' equipment and personnel were subsequently sold off to Anaheim Electronics, a major supplier of electronic components for the Federation during the One Year War. From then on, Anaheim became the Earth Sphere's premiere mobile suit manufacturer. Officially, Anaheim produced mobile suits exclusively for the Earth Federation, but it was an open secret that certain silos of the corporation also fulfilled orders from Zeon remnants and the Republic.
Finally, in U.C. 0100, the Republic relinquished its independence and rejoined the Federation as mandated, fulfilling the last of the treaty's terms.
