Gihren Zabi (ギレン・ザビ Giren Zabi?) is a character who appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

Background Information[]

Gihren Zabi is the eldest son of Sovereign Degwin Sodo Zabi, leader of the of the Principality of Zeon, and brother of Kycilia, Dozle, and Garma. Gihren was appointed Supreme Commander of Zeon's National Defense Force, and oversaw Zeon's campaign against the Earth Federation during the One Year War. Following the war's end and the death of Degwin, Gihren became locked in a cold war with Kycilia over sole control of the Principality of Zeon.

When Sovereign Degwin Sodo Zabi died in U.C. 0080 following the One Year War, Kycilia suspected he had been assassinated by Gihren. Gihren never admitted any involvement. The last time he and his sister saw each other for the next five years was at Degwin's funeral. Kycilia retreated to her power base of Granada, and Gihren alternated his residence between Zum City at Side 3 and the Zabi family's private villa, where he would spend time with his secretary and rumored lover, Cecilia Irene. Although Supreme Commander Gihren and Major General Kycilia were effectively Zeon's co-rulers during this period, the relationship between them was fraught with paranoia over assassination attempts, and managing the Principality's day-to-day affairs fell to Prime Minister Darcia Bakharo.[1]

In U.C. 0085, Gihren ordered the creation of the Yomagn'tho, a modified Solar Ray-type colony laser officially designed to warm Earth's atmosphere and counteract the nuclear winter caused by the Operation British colony drop on Sydney, Australia. Presented as a peace offering to the Earth Federation, Yomagn'tho was in reality a superweapon, envisioned as the ultimate deterrent against any future Federation military aggression toward Zeon and the space colonies. Kycilia made a pretense of supporting Gihren's project by negotiating financial support for it from President Pergamino of Side 6, but had her own secret plans for Yomagn'tho. After the attempt on her life at Izuma, where the negotiations took place, Kycilia came to believe that the apparent Federation-led attack only happened because Gihren had purposefully leaked her whereabouts.[1]

Upon Yomagn'tho's completion, made possible due to the recovery of the Rose of Sharon artifact, Gihren traveled to the installation to take part in the completion ceremony. During a private meeting with Kycilia attended by Admiral Chapman Jirom and Cecilia Irene, Kycilia openly denounced Gihren for committing patricide, and assassinated her brother and his entourage with poison gas. She then seized control of Yomagn'tho by means of the gMS-κ GFreD, piloted by the Newtype Nyaan, which fired a Zeknova at the asteroid base A Baoa Qu, obliterating the main bastion of Gihren's loyalists among the National Defense Force.[1]

  • His relatively short appearance in GQuuuuuuX became a subject of mockery amongst Japanese fans, as he was constantly mentioned throughout the series but made only less than 2 minutes of showtime, which ended right before his death.
  • Behind Gihren is the painting of "L'Apparition" by the French artist Gustave Moreau.
